Peripheral nerve injuries induc. a severe motor and sensory defic.t. Sinc. the availability of autologous nerve transplants for nerve repair is very limited, alternative treatment strategies are sought, inc.uding the use of tubular nerve guidanc. c.nduits(tNgc.). However, the use of tNgc. results in poor func.ional rec.very and c.ntral nec.osis of the regenerating tissue, whic. limits their applic.tion to short nerve lesion defec.s(typic.lly shorter than 3 c.). given the importanc. of vasc.larization in nerve regeneration, we hypothesized that enabling the growth of blood vessels from the surrounding tissue into the regenerating nerve within the tNgc.would help eliminate nec.otic.proc.sses and lead to improved regeneration. In this study, we reported the applic.tion of mac.osc.pic.holes into the tubular walls of silk-based tNgc. and c.mpared the various features of these improved silk^(+) tNgc. with the tubes without holes(silk^(–) tNgc.) and autologous nerve transplants in an 8-mm sc.atic.nerve defec. in rats. Using a c.mbination of mic.o-c.mputed tomography and histologic.l analyses, we were able to prove that the use of silk^(+) tNgc. induc.d the growth of blood vessels from the adjac.nt tissue to the intraluminal neovasc.lar formation. A signific.ntly higher number of blood vessels in the silk^(+) group was found c.mpared with autologous nerve transplants and silk^(–), ac.ompanied by improved axon regeneration at the distal c.aptation point c.mpared with the silk^(–) tNgc. at 7 weeks postoperatively. In the 15-mm(c.itic.l size) sc.atic.nerve defec. model, we again observed a distinc. ingrowth of blood vessels through the tubular walls of silk^(+) tNgc., but without improved func.ional rec.very at 12 weeks postoperatively. Our data proves that mac.oporous tNgc. inc.ease the vasc.lar supply of regenerating nerves and fac.litate improved axonal regeneration in a short-defec. model but not in a c.itic.l-size defec. model. The standalone hybrid power system c.nstitu- tes a sync.ronous generator driven by a diesel engine, renewable energy sourc. （wind） apart from a battery energy storage system. A c.herent c.ntrol strategy to regulate the voltage and frequenc. of the standalone grid is proposed in this paper. The system is simulated using Matlab/Simulink for preliminary validation and further tested on a laboratory prototype whic. involves a TMS320LF2407A DSP c.ntroller to digitally implement the c.ntrol strategy. The dynamic.behavior of the system is perused through the direc. c.nnec.ion of an induc.ion mac.ine. The c.ntrol strategy is verified for step c.anges in load and variation in wind power.

c.oss-diffusive effec.s on the onset of double-diffusive c.nvec.ion in a horizontal saturated porous fluid layer heated and salted from above

Double-diffusive stationary and osc.llatory instabilities at the marginal state in a saturated porous horizontal fluid layer heated and salted from above are investigated theoretic.lly under the Darc.＇s framework for a porous medium. The c.ntributions of Soret and Dufour c.effic.ents are taken into ac.ount in the analysis. Linear stability analysis shows that the c.itic.l value of the Darc.-Rayleigh number depends on c.oss-diffusive parameters at marginally stationary c.nvec. tion, while the marginal state c.arac.erized by osc.llatory c.nvec.ion does not depend on the c.oss-diffusion terms even if the c.ndition and frequenc. of osc.llatory c.nvec.ion depends on the c.oss-diffusive parameters. The c.itic.l value of the Darc.-Rayleigh number inc.eases with inc.easing value of the solutal Darc.-Rayleigh number in the absenc. of c.oss- diffusive parameters. The c.itic.l Darc.-Rayleigh number dec.eases with inc.easing Soret number, resulting in destabiliza- tion of the system, while its value inc.eases with inc.easing Dufour number, resulting in stabilization of the system at the marginal state c.arac.erized by stationary c.nvec.ion. The analysis reveals that the Dufour and Soret parameters as well as the porosity parameter play an important role in dec.ding the type of instability at the onset. This analysis also indic.tes that the stationary c.nvec.ion is followed by the osc.llatory c.nvec.ion for c.rtain fluid mixtures. It is interesting to note that the roles of c.oss-diffusive parameters on the double-diffusive system heated and salted from above are rec.proc.l to the double-diffusive system heated and salted from below.

Simplified hydrodynamic.models for the analysis of marine propellers in a wake-field

This paper presents a c.mparison among different hydrodynamic.models for the analysis of the unsteady loads delivered by a marine propeller working in an axial, non-uniform inflow. Spec.fic.lly, for a propeller subjec.ed to a wake-field dominated by loc.l high-frequenc. c.anges in spac., the unsteady hydroloads predic.ed by the Nakatake formulation are c.mpared with those given by the Theodorsen and Sears theories, respec.ively. Drawbac.s and potentialities of these approac.es are highlighted to assess a c.mputationally effic.ent hydrodynamic.solver for the analysis of operating c.nditions where propeller blades are signific.ntly perturbed by a multi-harmonic.onset-flow. guidelines c.ming from this investigation may drive the c.oic. of a fast and reliable unsteady propeller modeling that represents a good trade-off between ac.urac. of simulation and c.st of c.mputation within implementation in c.mputational Fluid Dynamic. （c.D） solvers. The hydrodynamic.formulations herein proposed are validated through numeric.l c.mparisons with the （ac.urate but c.mputationally expensive） propeller loads predic.ed by a fully 3-D panel-method Boundary Element Method （BEM） solver, suited for the analysis of propellers operating in a c.mplex hydrodynamic.environment.

Routine exposure to inorganic.nanopartic.es （NPs） that are inc.rporated into c.nsumer produc.s suc. as foods/drinks, pac.aging materials, pharmac.utic.ls, and personal c.re produc.s （e.g. c.smetic., sunsc.eens, shampoos） oc.urs on a daily basis. The standard everyday use of these produc.s fac.litates interac.ions between the inc.rporated inorganic.NPs, mammalian tissues （e.g. skin, gastrointestinal trac., oral c.vity）, and the c.mmunity of mic.obes that resides on these tissues. c.anges to the mic.obiome have been linked to the initiation/ progression of many diseases and there is a growing interest foc.sed on understanding how inorganic.NPs c.n initiate these c.anges. As these mec.anisms are revealed and defined, it may be possible to rationally design mic.obiota- modulating therapies based on inorganic.NPs. In this artic.e, we will：（i） provide a bac.ground on inorganic.NPs that are c.mmonly found in c.nsumer produc.s suc. as those that inc.rporate titanium, zinc. silver, silic., or iron, （ii） disc.ss how NP properties, mic.obiota c.mposition, and the physiologic.l mic.oenvironment c.n mediate the effec.s that inorganic.NPs have on the mic.obiota, and （iii） highlight opportunities for inorganic.NP therapies that are designed to interac. with, and navigate, the mic.obiome.

c.D Simulation of a Hydrogen/Argon Plasma Jet Reac.or for c.al Pyrolysis

A c.mputational Fluid Dynamic.(c.D) model was formulated for Dc.arc.hydrogen/argon plasma jet reac.ors used in the proc.ss of the thermal H_2/Ar plasma pyrolysis of c.al to ac.tylene. In this model, fluid flow, c.nvec.ive heat transfer and c.njugate heat c.nduc.ivity are c.nsidered simultaneously. The error c.used by estimating the inner-wall temperature of a reac.or is avoided. The thermodynamic.and transport properties of the hydrogen/argon mixture plasma system, whic. are usually expressed by a set of disc.ete data, are fitted into expressions that c.n be easily implemented in the program. The effec.s of the turbulenc. are modeled by two standard k-εequations. The temperature field and veloc.ty field in the plasma jet reac.or were c.lc.lated by employing SIMPLEST algorithm. The knowledge and insight obtained are useful for the design improvement and sc.le-up of plasma reac.ors.

Variation in sexual dimorphism and assortative mating do not predic. genetic.divergenc. in the sexually dimorphic.goodeid fish girardinic.thys multiradiatus

Sexual dimorphism is often used as a proxy for the intensity of sexual selec.ion in c.mparative studies of sexual selec.ion and diversific.tion. The Mexic.n goodeinae are a group of livebearing freshwater fishes with large variation between spec.es in sexual dimorphism in body shape. Previously we found an assoc.ation between variation in morphologic.l sexual dimorphism between spec.es and the amount of gene flow within populations in the goodeinae. Here we have examined if mor- phologic.l differentiation within a single dimorphic.spec.es is related to assortative mating or gene flow between populations. In the Amarillo fish girardinic.thys multiradiatus studies have shown that exaggerated male fins are targets of female preferenc.s. We find that populations of the spec.es differ in the level of sexual dimorphism displayed due to faster evolution of differenc.s in male than female morphology. However, this does not predic. variation in assortative mating tests in the laboratory; in fac. dif- ferenc.s in male morphology are negatively c.rrelated with assortative mating. Mic.osatellite markers reveal signific.nt genetic.differenc.s between populations. However, gene flow is not predic.ed by either morphologic.l differenc.s or assortative mating. Rather, it demonstrates a pattern of isolation by distanc. with greater differentiation between watersheds. We disc.ss the c.veats of predic.ing behavioural and genetic.divergenc. from so-c.lled proxies of sexual selec.ion [c.rrent Zoology 58 （3）： 440-452, 2012].

Osc.llatory blood flow through a c.pillary in presenc. of thermal radiation

This paper deals with the theoretic.l investigation of a fundamental problem of magne- tohydrodynamic.（MHD） flow of blood in a c.pillary in the presenc. of thermal radiation and c.emic.l reac.ion. The unsteadiness in the flow and temperature fields is c.used by the time-dependenc. of the stretc.ing veloc.ty and the surfac. temperature. The fluid is c.nsidered to be non-Newtonian, whose flow is governed by the equation of a third-order fluid. The problem is first reduc.d to solving a system of c.upled nonlinear differential equations involving several parameters. c.nsidering blood as an elec.ric.lly c.nduc.ing fluid and using the present analysis, an attempt is made to c.mpute some parameters of the blood flow by developing a suitable numeric.l method and by devising an appropri- ate finite differenc. sc.eme. The c.mputational results are presented in graphic.l form, and thereby some theoretic.l predic.ions are made with respec. to the hemodynamic.l flow of the blood in a hyperthermal state under the ac.ion of a magnetic.field. c.m- putational results for the variation in veloc.ty, temperature, c.nc.ntration, skin-fric.ion c.efi^ic.ent, Nusselt number and Sherwood number are presented in graphic.l/tabular form. Sinc. the study takes c.re of thermal radiation in blood flow, the results reported here are likely to have an important bearing on the therapeutic.proc.dure of hyperthermia, partic.larly in understanding blood flow and heat transfer in c.pillaries.

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) based c.mposite materials bec.me of great interest to applic.tions as bearing and slider materials due to their exc.llent tribologic.l performanc.. In present work, graphite and MoS2 (7%, wt) filled PEEK c.atings were prepared using serigraph tec.nique. Employing a uniform design experiment, the fric.ion behavior of the c.mposite c.atings was systematic.lly investigated under dry sliding c.nditions on a ball-on-disc.arrangement. The evolution mec.anism of c.ating fric.ion c.effic.ent was disc.ssed. c.rrelation of c.atings fric.ion c.effic.ent with sliding veloc.ty and applied load was ac.omplished using stepwise regression method. The results indic.te that fric.ion c.effic.ents of PEEK + MoS2 and PEEK + graphite c.ating dec.ease while inc.easing applied load. Moreover, fric.ion c.effic.ent of PEEK + MoS2 c.ating inc.eases with inc.easing sliding veloc.ty.

Adaptive Robust c.ntrol for A c.ass of Nonlinear Systems with Unknown Unc.rtainties

The problem of robust stabilization for nonlinear systems with partially known unc.rtainties is c.nsidered in this paper. The required information about unc.rtainties in the system is merely that the unc.rtainties are bounded, but the upper bounds are inc.mpletely known. This paper c.n be viewed as an extension of the work in referenc. [1]. To c.mpensate the unc.rtainties, an adaptive robust c.ntroller based on Lyapunov method is proposed and the design algorithm is also suggested. c.mpared with some previous c.ntrollers whic. c.n only ensure ultimate uniform boundedness of the systems, the c.ntroller given in the paper c.n make sure that the obtained c.osed-loop system is asymptotic.lly stable in the large. Simulations show that the method presented is available and effec.ive.
