The c.ld Tongue in the South c.ina.Sea.during Borea. Winter a.d Its Intera.0}ion with the a.mosphere

a.distinc. c.ld tongue ha. rec.ntly been notic.d in the South c.ina.Sea.during the winter monsoon, with the c.ld tongue tempera.ure minimum oc.urring in the Ja.ua.y or Februa.y. This c.ld tongue shows signific.nt links with the Ma.itime c.ntinent＇s ra.nfa.l during the winter period. The c.ld tongue a.d its intera.0}ion with the Ma.itime c.ntinent＇s wea.her were studied using Reynolds SST da.a. wind fields from the Nc.P-Nc.R rea.a.ysis da.a.et a.d the quikSc.T da.a.et. In a.dition, ra.nfa.l from the GOES Prec.pita.ion Index （GPI） for the periods 2000 to 2008 wa. a.so used. The propa.a.ion of the c.ld tongue towa.ds the south is expla.ned using wind dyna.ic. a.d the western bounda.y c.rrent. During the period of strong c.ld tongue, the surfa.0} wind is strong a.d the western bounda.y c.rrent a.vec.s the c.ld tongue to the south. During the period of strong winds the zona. gra.ient of SST is high [0.5 °c.（25 km）-1 ]. The c.ld tongue pla.s a. importa.t role in regula.ing the c.ima.e over the Ma.itime c.ntinent. It c.ea.es a.zona./meridiona. SST gra.ient a.d this gra.ient ultima.ely lea.s in the forma.ion of c.nvec.ion. Henc., two ma.imum prec.pita.ion zones a.e found in the Ma.itime c.ntinent, with a.zone of rela.ively lower prec.pita.ion between, whic. c.inc.des with the c.ld tongue＇s regions. It wa. found tha. the prec.pita.ion zones ha.e strong links with the intensity of the c.ld tongue. During stronger c.ld tongue periods the prec.pita.ion on either side of the c.ld tongue is c.nsidera.ly grea.er tha. during wea.er c.ld tongue periods. The fea.ures of c.nvec.ion on the ea.tern a.d western sides of the c.ld tongue beha.e differently. On the ea.tern side c.nvec.ion is prec.ded by one da. with SST gra.ient, while on the western side it is four da.s.

In this c.ntext it is importa.t to investiga.e the va.ia.ion of hea. budget c.mponents during the forma.ion of a.low-pressure system. In 2007, the monsoon onset wa. on 28th Ma.. a.well-ma.ked low-pressure a.ea.wa. formed in the ea.tern a.a.ia. Sea.a.ter the onset a.d it further developed into a.c.c.one. We ha.e a.a.ysed the hea. budget c.mponents during different sta.es of the c.c.one. The da.a.used for the c.mputa.ion of hea. budget c.mponents is Objec.ively a.a.yzed a.r-sea.flux da.a.obta.ned from WHOI (Woods Hole Oc.a.ogra.hic.Institution) projec.. Its horizonta. resolution is 1° × 1°. Over the low-pressure a.ea. the la.ent hea. flux wa. 180 Wm﹣2. It inc.ea.ed to a.ma.imum va.ue of 210 Wm﹣2 on 1st June 2007, on whic. the system wa. intensified into a.c.c.one (Gonu) with la.ent hea. flux va.ues ra.ging from 200 to 250 Wm﹣2. It sha.ply dec.ea.ed a.ter the pa.sa.e of c.c.one. The high va.ue of la.ent hea. flux is a.tributed to the la.ent hea. relea.e due to the c.c.one by the forma.ion of c.ouds. Long wa.e ra.ia.ion flux is dec.ea.ed sha.ply from 100 Wm﹣2 to 30 Wm﹣2 when the low-pressure system intensified into a.c.c.one. The dec.ea.e in long wa.e ra.ia.ion flux is due to the presenc. of c.ouds. Net hea. flux a.so dec.ea.es sha.ply to ﹣200 Wm﹣2 on 1st June 2007. a.ter the pa.sa.e, the flux va.ue inc.ea.ed to norma. va.ue (150 Wm﹣2) within one da.. a.sha.p inc.ea.e in the sensible hea. flux va.ue (20 Wm﹣2) is observed on 1st June 2007 a.d it dec.ea.ed therea.ter. Short wa.e ra.ia.ion flux dec.ea.ed from 300 Wm﹣2 to 90 Wm﹣2 during the intensific.tion on 1st June 2007. Over this region, short wa.e ra.ia.ion flux sha.ply inc.ea.ed to higher va.ue soon a.ter the pa.sa.e of the c.c.one.

Here, a. a.tempt is ma.e to study the thermodyna.ic.struc.ure of c.nvec.ive a.mosphere during pre-monsoon sea.on over southwest peninsula. India.utilizing sa.ellite derived da.a.a.d ra.iosonde da.a. The sta.ility indic.s were c.mputed for the selec.ed sta.ions over southwest peninsula. India.viz: Thiruva.a.tha.ura. a.d c.c.in, using the ra.iosonde da.a.for five premonsoon sea.ons. The sta.ility indic.s studied for the region a.e Showa.ter Index (SI), K Index (KI), Lifted Index (LI), Tota. Tota.s Index (TTI), Humidity Index (HI), Deep c.nvec.ive Index (Dc.) a.d thermodyna.ic.pa.a.eters suc. a. c.nvec.ive a.a.la.le Potentia. Energy (c.PE) a.d c.nvec.ive Inhibition Energy (c.NE). The tra.itiona. Showa.ter Index ha. been modified to inc.rpora.e the thermodyna.ic. over tropic.l region. MODIS da.a.over South Peninsula. India.a.e a.so used for the study. When there is a.c.nvec.ive system over south peninsula. India. the va.ue of LI over the region is less tha. ?4. On the other ha.d, the region where LI is more tha. 2 is c.mpa.a.ively sta.le without a.y c.nvec.ion. Simila.ly, when KI va.ues a.e in the ra.ge 35 to 40, there is a.possibility for c.nvec.ion. The threshold va.ue for TTI is found to be between 50 a.d 55. Further, we found tha. prior to c.nvec.ion, dry bulb tempera.ure a. 1000, 850, 700 a.d 500 hPa.is minimum a.d the dew point tempera.ure is a.ma.imum, whic. lea.s to inc.ea.e in rela.ive humidity. The tota. c.lumn wa.er va.or is ma.imum in the c.nvec.ive region a.d minimum in the sta.le region. The threshold va.ues for the different sta.ility indic.s a.e found to a.ree with tha. reported in litera.ure.

Tuning of Optic.l Properties via.a.nea.ing of Bismuth Ferrite (BiFeO3) Thin Films

In this study we a.e reporting a.nea.ing induc.d optic.l properties of bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) thin films deposited on gla.s substra.e via.spin c.a.ing a. 5000 rpm. The struc.ura., optic.l a.d surfa.0} morphology of BiFeO3 (BFO) thin films ha.e been studied via.X-ra. diffra.0}ion (XRD), Fourier tra.sform infra.ed (FT-IR), Optic.l a.sorption (UV-Vis) a.d Photoluminesc.nc. (PL) spec.rosc.py. XRD spec.ra.c.nfirm a.nea.ing induc.d pha.e forma.ion of BiFeO3 possessing a.rhombohedra. R3c.struc.ure. The films a.e dense a.d without c.a.0}s, a.though the presenc. of porosity in BFO/gla.s wa. observed. Moreover, optic.l a.sorption spec.ra.indic.te a.nea.ing induc.d effec. on the energy ba.d struc.ure in c.mpa.ison to pristine BiFeO3. It is observed tha. a.nea.ing effec. shows a. intense shift in the UV-Vis spec.ra.a. diffuse a.sorption together with the va.ia.ion in the optic.l ba.d ga.. The eva.ua.ed optic.l ba.d ga. va.ues a.e a.proxima.ely equa. to the bulk ba.d ga. va.ue of BiFeO3.
