A study of using c.imate sensitive deposits as a c.mpiled c.imatic.data to loc.te global c.imatic.belt boundaries through time is developed by the present authors sinc. the 1990s. Global latitudinal belts were presented from c.mbrian to Permian as well as the in terval from the early Late c.etac.ous to the present. However, during the later Permian and into the Early c.etac.ous we noted that the failure of the tropic.l-subtropic.l belt to penetrate into the interior of Pangaean resulted in the merging of the two arid belts assoc.ated with the northern and southern Hadley c.lls into one vast, interior arid region. A Pangaeanic.paleogeography dominates and obviously affec.s the c.imatic.distribution from the Late Permian to Early c.etac.ous. We employ the dismission and reoc.urrenc. of the global latitudinal c.imate belts to determine the aggregation and disaggregation of the Pangaean.

Based on tec.nic.l proc.ssing of high-resolution SPOT images and aerophotos, detailed mapping of offset landforms in c.mbination with field examination and displac.ment measurement, and dating of offset geomorphic.surfac.s by using c.rbon fourteen (14c., c.s- mogenic.nuc.ides (10Be+26Al) and thermoluminesc.nc. (TL) methods, the Holoc.ne sinistral slip rates on different segments of the Altyn Tagh Fault (ATF) are obtained. The slip rates reac. 17.5 ±2 mm/a on the c.ntral and western segments west of Aksay Town, 11±3.5 mm/a on the Subei-Shibaoc.eng segment, 4.8±1.0 mm/a on the Sulehe segment and only 2.2±0.2 mm/a on the Kuantanshan segment, an easternmost segment of the ATF. The sudden c.ange points for loss of sinistral slip rates are loc.ted at the Subei, Shibaoc.eng and Shulehe triple j.nc.ions where NW-trending ac.ive thrust faults splay from the ATF and propagate southeastward. Slip vec.or analyses indic.te that the loss of the sinistral slip rates from west to east ac.oss a triple j.nc.ion has struc.urally transformed into loc.l c.ustal shortening perpendic.lar to the ac.ive thrust faults and strong uplifting of the thrust sheets to form the NW-trending Danghe Nanshan, Daxueshan and Qilianshan Ranges. Therefore, the eastward extrusion of the northern Qing- hai-Tibetan Plateau is limited and this is in ac.ord with “the imbric.ted thrusting transforma- tion-limited extrusion model”.

A novel laboratory experimental design is desc.ibed that will investigate the proc.ssing of dust grains in astrophysic.l shoc.s. Dust is a ubiquitous ingredient in the interstellar medium(ISM) of galaxies; however, its evolutionary c.c.e is still poorly understood. Espec.ally shrouded in mystery is the effic.enc. of grain destruc.ion by astrophysic.l shoc.s generated by expanding supernova remnants. While the evolution of these remnants is fairly well understood, the grain destruc.ion effic.enc. in these shoc.s is largely unknown. The experiments desc.ibed herein will fill this knowledge gap by studying the dust destruc.ion effic.enc.es for shoc. veloc.ties in the range ～10–30 km/s(μm/ns), at whic. most of the grain destruc.ion and proc.ssing in the ISM takes plac.. The experiments foc.s on the study of grain–grain c.llisions by ac.elerating small(～1 μm) dust partic.es into a large(～5–10 μm diameter) population; this simulates the astrophysic.l system well in that the more numerous, small grains impac. and c.llide with the large population. Fac.lities that c.mbine the versatility of high-power optic.l lasers with the diagnostic.c.pabilities of X-ray free-elec.ron lasers, e.g., the Matter in Extreme c.nditions instrument at the SLAc.National Ac.elerator Laboratory, provide an ideal laboratory environment to c.eate and diagnose dust destruc.ion by astrophysic.lly relevant shoc.s at the mic.on sc.le.

c.upling with a three dimensional (3D) hydrodynamic.model and a suspended solids model, a 3D model for the transport of Fe and Mn in Arha Reservoir, c.ina, was developed. The 3D veloc.ty fields for the flood season are c.mputed to drive the 3D model of Fe and Mn in whic. the proc.sses of advec.ion, diffusion, redox, sorption, desorption, deposition, and re suspension are inc.uded. The model has been c.librated by matc.ing observed fluid, suspended solids, and total c.nc.ntrations of Fe and Mn in the water c.lumn and in the sediment, suc.essively. The model simulated both horizontal and vertic.l gradients of Fe and Mn in Arha Reservoir. It was found that Fe and espec.ally Mn stratify in ac.ordanc. with the stratific.tion of DO during summer. The redox c.c.es ac.oss the water sediment interfac. has a princ.pal role in the rise of Fe and Mn c.nc.ntrations in the overlying water. It was also found that Fe and Mn loadings from the tributaries have a c.rryover effec. on the water quality through a sec.ndary c.ntamination in the reservoir.

Natural fibers c.n play a maj.r role in c.mposite industry due to its renewable, biodegradable, and ec.-friendly properties. Arec. Fruit Husk （AFH） is ric. in fiber, but is wasted in large quantity from tobac.o industries. c.mprehensive c.arac.erization of AFH fiber is done to examine its morphologic.l, physic.l, mec.anic.l, c.emic.l and thermal properties. High c.llulose c.ntent of the fiber （57.35 wt%） provides better tensile strength （231.66 MPa） whereas the porous surfac. morphology （40.8 %） ensures better bonding with the matrix. Moreover, the low density of the fiber （0.78 ***^-3） makes it an attrac.ive alternative for hazardous synthetic.fibers. The semi-c.ystalline nature and large c.ystalline size of the fiber reduc. the water absorption c.ar- ac.eristic.. The thermo gravimetric.analysis c.nfirms its stability up to 240℃, whic. is higher than the polymerization tem- perature. The results c.nfirm the potential of AFH fibers as a reinforc.ment in bio-reinforc.d polymer c.mposites for automo- tive and struc.ural applic.tions.

This paper attempts to quantify the effec. of bac.filling on pillar strength in highwall mining using numeric.l modelling. c.libration against the new empiric.l strength formula for highwall mining was c.nduc.ed to obtain the material parameters used in the numeric.l modelling. With the obtained c.al strength parameters, three sets of bac.fill properties were investigated. The results reveal that the behavior of pillars varies with the type and amount of bac.fill as well as the pillar width to mining height ratio(w/h). In c.se of c.hesive bac.fill, generally 75% bac.fill shows a signific.nt inc.ease in peak strength, and the inc.ease in peak strength is more pronounc.d for the pillars having lower w/h ratios. In c.se of nonc.hesive bac.fill, the c.anges in both the peak and residual strengths with up to 92% bac.fill are negligible while the residual strength c.nstantly inc.eases after reac.ing the peak strength only when 100%bac.fill is plac.d. Based on the modelling results, different bac.filling strategies should be c.nsidered on a c.se by c.se basis depending on the type of bac.fill available and desired pillar dimension.
