Performance Assessment of Partially Pre-fused Synthetic Flux in Basic oxygen Steel Making

Lump lime as the most common flux and iron ore as a coolant are used in basic oxygen steel making. However, high melting point, poor dissolution property, fines generation tendency and hygroscopic nature of lump lime often create problems in operation. As the combination of both iron oxide （Fe2o3） and cao shows eutectic at 1 230 ℃, a combined mass of iron oxide and lime melts at lower temperature and dissolves faster in a molten bath. A partially pre-fused synthetic flux （PSF） was prepared through an innovative way in combination of iron oxide fines viz. Linz Donawitz converter sludge and blast furnace flue dust and lime fines by micro-pelletization of the mix followed by coke breeze free sintering. The developed PSF shows good cold handling strength, low melting point （1 180 ℃）, good thermal shock resistance, etc. As a low melting synthetic flux, its performance was assessed through dissolution/melting study in hot metal bath and refining of hot metal in a simulated bottom blown converter using （i） PSF, （ii） only lump lime and （iii） lump lime with iron ore when keeping other conditions identical. Very fast dissolution （27 80 s for 1-3 g lumps）, enhanced removal of c and P （11-12 min）, controlled slag foaming, and reduced oxygen consumption was obtained for using PSF.

objective:To investigate the prevalence of leptospirosis among patients from within and outside ***,attending the calcutta School of Tropical Medicine,for treatment during August 2002 to August ***:The leptospirosis cases were determined on the basis of clinical, epidemiological,and biochemical factors,and were tested for leptospiral antibodies using IgM *** samples with absorbance ratio≥1.21 were interpreted as ***:The commonest presentation involved fever,headache and *** male-female ratio was 61:46.A total of 65(64.20%) cases had abnormal liver and renal functions respectively,and 57.1% had both the *** highest incidence(75.35.04%) was recorded in Septemberoctober followed by July-August(53.24.77%).The reactive cases had absorbance ratios between 1.21 and *** 53 showed equivocal result,while IgM non reactivity were seen in 90 patients (absorbance ratios 0.10-0.90).The patients responded to treatment with parenteral antibiotics, penicillin,ceftriaxone and cefotaxime;follow up did not reveal case ***:The cardinal signs of leptospirosis help in making clinical diagnosis,but in any hyper-endemic situation any patient reporting with acute lever and signs of pulmonary,hepatic or renal involvement should be suspected to have leptospirosis and investigated *** awareness,and early diagnosis and treatment,can reduce mortality due to leptospirosis.

coated Electrodes with small amounts of nickel were developed for welding ductile iron(DI) and conversion of the same into austempered ductile iron(ADI) after austempering. Among six electrodes, Trials 3 and 4 were selected for establishing crack-free weld deposits via preheating and post-weld heat treatment. Austenitization was performed at 900°c for 2 h and austempering at 300 or 350°c for three different holding times to observe the results of austempering with respect to the microstructure, hardness, and austempering kinetics of the samples. The microstructures of the weld deposits showed needle-like bainitic ferrite with small amounts of retained austenite when treated at 300°c and feathery bainitic ferrite with large amounts of retainedaustenite when treated at 350°c. The electrode labeled with Trial 3 revealed greater austenite contents than that labeled with Trial 4 when treated with a 2 h holding time regardless of the austempering temperature applied. The transformation rate of the bainitic ferrite of Trial 3 was relatively higher than that of Trial 4 and showed a lower rate constant, leading to a higher diffusion rate of carbon in austenite.

A Tm-Bi co-Doped Fiber Laser with Dual Pumping operation

We demonstrate an efficient fiber laser operating at 1901.6 nm using a newly developed thulium bismuth co-doped fiber(TBF)with dual pumping at 792 nm and 1552 *** fiber was fabricated using modified chemical vapor deposition and solution doping *** dopant concentrations(wt%)and compositions inside the core are 0.15 Bi_(2)o_(3),0.3 Tm_(2)o_(3),1.0 Al_(2)o_(3) and 12.0 Geo_(2).The TBF laser operates at 1901.6 nm with a lasing efficiency of 33.2%and pump power threshold of 85 mW using a 2-m-long TBF in a linear cavity with two fiber Bragg gratings(FBGs).The high efficiency is attributed to the use of additional 1552 nm pump to complement 792 nm *** maximum output power of 225 mW is achieved at the pump power of 820 mW with the optimum length of 2 m.

Ni based amorphous materials have great potential as hydrogen purification membranes. In the present work the melt spun(Ni0.6Nb0.4-yTay)100-xZrxwith y=0, 0.1 and x=20, 30 was studied. The result of X-ray diffraction spectra of the ribbons showed an amorphous nature of the alloys. Heating these ribbons below T c, even in a hydrogen atmosphere（1-10 bar）, the amorphous structure was retained. The crystallization process was characterized by differential thermal analysis and the activation energy of such process was obtained. The hydrogen absorption properties of the samples in their amorphous state were studied by the volumetric method,and the results showed that the addition of Ta did not significantly influence the absorption properties, a clear change of the hydrogen solubility was observed with the variation of the Zr content. The values of the hydrogenation enthalpy changed from37 k J/mol for x=30 to9k J/mol for x=20. The analysis of the volumetric data provides the indications about the hydrogen occupation sites during hydrogenation, suggesting that at the beginning of the absorption process the deepest energy levels are occupied, while only shallower energy levels are available at higher hydrogen content, with the available interstitial sites forming a continuum of energy levels.

Effect of pyroxenite and olivine minerals as source of Mgo in hematite pellet on improvement of metallurgical properties

Pelletization of hematite ore requires high fineness and very high induration temperature（~1325 ℃） owing to its poor diffusion bonding unlike magnetite ore. Further, high-alumina hematite pellets show very high reduction degradation index（rDI） during low temperature（500-650 ℃） reduction due to their volume expansion and lattice distortion. Noamundi（India） hematite ore contains very high Al2o3（2.3%） with adverse ratio of alumina to silica（~2） for which, it shows very high rDI. In this work, the acid pellets prepared from Noamundi ore fines of optimum Blaine fineness show good cold crushing strength（ccS）. However, it shows very high rDI（77%）. In order to reduce rDI, Mg o in form of two different gangue-containing fluxes, such as pyroxenite and olivine in varying quantities has been added. The optimum requirement and performance of these fluxes has been examined and compared. Both pyroxenite and olivine fluxed pellets show significant lowering of rDI（26% and 23%, respectively） and improvement of other properties, viz ccS, swelling indices etc with good reducibility（70%-77%）. Finally, a good quality acidic hematite pellet was developed from high-alumina ore without using any lime which is very important charge material in combination of basic sinter in blast furnace.

Er-doped concentric-cores optical fiber for simultaneous amplification and compensation of positive dispersion

The Er-doped concentric-cores dispersion compensating fiber (EDDcF) has been demonstrated. The rare earth has been doped as a ring around the inner core. We have obtained 14-dB gain at 1550 nm (using 100-mW pump power and 980-nm wavelength) with dispersion of about -165 ps/(km·nm). It is useful for the optical fiber network where amplification as well as negative dispersion are necessary.
