Fate of enteric pathogens in different spinach cultivars cultivated in growth chamber and field systems

between enteric pathogens and plant hosts have been shown to be *** series of studies sought to expand our knowledge in this area and evaluate whether spinach cultivar selection may be used to curtail pathogen contamination and ultimately reduce microbiological risk associated with this *** a component to that assessment,potential antimicrobials that were constituents within spinach leaves were first analysed and found to be spatially non-uniform,being more concentrated on the outer edges of the leaves than in the centre of the ***,the entire foliage of a plant was sampled in subsequent studies examining the fate of Salmonella and Escherichia coli O157:H7 on seven cultivars of *** did not affect the degree of Salmonella internalized into spinach tissue(P>0.05);however,it appeared that those Salmonella that were internalized were transient residents as the percentage of plants containing this internalized pathogen dropped within 24 *** relationship existed between antimicrobial levels(total phenols or antioxidant capacity)of the spinach cultivars and the prevalence of plants exhibiting Salmonella internalization or the persistence of Salmonella or *** O157:H7 after the plants had been sprayed with the *** both growth chamber and field studies,Salmonella was more resistant than *** O157:H7 to *** affected the persistence of both *** O157:H7 and Salmonella but the ranking for each pathogen’s survival on three of those cultivars differed suggesting the difficulty in finding one cultivar that would be inhospitable to multiple pathogens.

Multicenter,randomized study to optimize bowel for colon capsule endoscopy

AIM To assess the cleansing efficacy and safety of a new colon capsule endoscopy(ccE) bowel preparation *** This was a multicenter,prospective,randomized,controlled study comparing two ccE regimens. Subjects were asymptomatic and average risk for colorectal cancer. The second generation ccE system(Pill cam? cOLON 2;Medtronic,Yoqneam,Israel) was utilized. Preparation regimens differed in the 1 st and 2 nd boosts with the Study regimen using oral sulfate solution(89 m L) with diatrizoate meglumine and diatrizoate sodium solution("diatrizoate solution")(boost 1 = 60 m L,boost 2 = 30 m L) and the control regimen oral sulfate solution(89 m L) alone. The primary outcome was overall and segmental colon cleansing. Secondary outcomes included safety,polyp detection,colonic transit,ccE completion and capsule excretion ≤ 12 h. RESULTS Both regimens had similar cleansing efficacy for the whole colon(Adequate: Study = 75.9%,control = 77.3%;P = 0.88) and individual segments. In the Study group,ccE completion was superior(Study = 90.9%,control = 76.9%;P = 0.048) and colonic transit was more often control = 4%;P = 0.0073). More Study regimen subjects experienced adverse events(Study = 19.4%,control = 3.4%;P = 0.0061),and this difference did not appear related to diatrizoate solution. Adverse events were primarily gastrointestinal in nature and no serious adverse events related either to the bowel preparation regimen or the capsule were observed. There was a trend toward higher polyp detection with the Study regimen,but this did not achieve statistical significance for any size category. Mean transit time through the entire gastrointestinal tract,from ingestion to excretion,was shorter with the Study regimen while mean colonic transit times were similar for both study *** A ccE bowel preparation regimen using oral sulfate solution and diatrizoate solution as a boost agent is effective,safe,and achieved superior ccE completion.

Engineering properties of the Bukit Timah Granitic residual soil in Singapore

Extensive site investigations were conducted prior to the construction of a Mass Rapid Transit project in Singapore that was predominantly in the Bukit Timah Granite(BTG)formation residual *** paper evaluates the engineering properties of the BTG formation residual soil based on data from 208 site investigation boreholes from four different *** on the results from 2481 conventional laboratory tests and 1192 in-situ tests,this paper summarizes the engineering properties of the highly variable BTG residual soil,including conventional composition analysis,index and hydraulic properties,and strength and deformation parameters required for geotechnical analysis and *** on these results,the BTG formation is found to be quite *** the degree of weathering decreases with depth from the top of the formation,the BTG residual soil becomes sandier,with reduced silt and clay *** coefficient of permeability and the compression index of the BTG residual soil vary *** addition,the empirical equations relating the shear strength(index)to the standard penetration test(SPT)-N,as well as the equations and charts for determining stiffness,are *** findings,together with the proposed equations or charts,can be used for design guidance of similar projects related to granitic residual soils in Singapore.

Numerical simulation of dispersion generated by a 180° turn in a microchannel

A numerical scheme is developed to simulate electro-osmotic flow and mass transport in a microchannel which includes a 180° turn. The model has been used to predict the behaviour of electro-osmotically driven flows. The detailed structure of the flow field in a microchannel in combination with species mass diffusion can explain the concentration dispersion introduced by a 180° turn. The results of our simulations agree both qualitatively and quantitatively *** is demonstrated that an improved electro-osmotic force model could simulate the with experimental electrokinetically driven flow well without making detailed calculations of the electric charge density distribution within the electrical double layer. Additionally, because this model applies forces to the liquid as opposed to imposing local velocities, it should also be appropriate for use where pressure gradients exist in the flow field.

Gender influence on defecographic abnormalities in patients with posterior pelvic floor disorders

AIM:To compare defecographic abnormalities in symptomatic men and women and to analyze differences between men and age-and symptom-matched ***:Sixty-six men(mean age:55.4 years,range:20-81 years) who complained of constipation and/or fecal incontinence and/or pelvic pain underwent defecography after intake of a barium *** were analyzed for the diagnosis of rectocele,enterocele,intussusception and perineal *** were compared with age-and symptom-matched women(n = 198) who underwent defecography during the same ***:Normal defecography was observed in 22.7% of men vs 5.5% of women(P cography in men compared with women showed 4.5%vs 44.4%(P ctocele,and 10.6% vs 29.8%(P cele,*** difference was observed for the diagnosis of intussusception(57.6% vs 44.9%).Perineal descent at rest was more frequent in women(P cONcLUSION:For the same complaint,diagnosis of defecographic abnormalities was different in men than in women:rectocele,enterocele and perineal descent at rest were observed less frequently in men than in women.

Resilience indicators support valuation of estuarine ecosystem restoration under climate change

Economic valuation of ecological restoration most often encompasses only the most tangible ecosystem service benefits,thereby omitting many difficult-to measure benefits,including those derived from enhanced reliability of ecosystem *** climate change is likely to impose novel ecosystem stressors,a typical approach to valuing benefits may fail to capture the contribution of ecosystem resilience to sustaining long-term ***,we generally lack predictive probabilistic models that would enable measurement and valuation of ***,alternative measures are needed to complement monetary values and broaden understanding of restoration *** use a case study of chesapeake Bay restoration(total maximum daily load)to show that ecosystem service benefits that are typically monetized leave critical information *** address these gaps,we review evidence for ecosystem services that can be quantified or described,including changes in harmful algal bloom *** further propose two integrative indicators of estuarine resilience-the extent of submerged aquatic vegetation and spatial distribution of *** aquatic vegetation extent is indicative of qualities of ecosystems that promote positive feedbacks to water *** distributed fish populations reduce risk by promoting diverse responses to spatially heterogeneous *** synthesis and new analyses for the chesapeake Bay suggest that resilience metrics improve understanding of restoration benefits by demonstrating how nutrient and sediment load reductions will alleviate multiple sources of stress,thereby enhancing the system’s capacity to absorb or adapt to extreme events or novel stresses.

Tiny insects against the weather flight and foraging patterns of Frankliniella schultzei (Thripidae) not altered by onset of rainfall

To survive in nature,organisms may need to take direct action to mitigate specific dangers from their environmental *** flying insects are thought to be at particular risk from rainfall that would be of negligible concern to larger *** study species Frankliniella schultzei is a thrips that inhabits flowers and feeds mostly on petal tissue and *** found to respond in the laboratory to decreases in atmospheric pressure associated with cyclonic conditions (rather than merely heavy rainfall),their responses to conditions preceding rainfall have not been tested in the *** field sampling investigated the relationship between floral development and sites at which male,female,and larval thrips were generally present on sunny *** then designed a sampling strategy to test if these thrips can anticipate imminent rainfall or storms and so seek shelter deep within flowers,by sampling host flowers (in sections)on multiple days with different weather *** traps were used to intercept thrips in flight,thus providing a measure of flight behavior across different *** initial sampling found adult thrips primarily at the petal apex of anthesis-stage flowers where pollen is distributed. We subsequently found that rainfall,atmospheric pressure change,temperature,humidity and wind had no effect on flight behavior of E schultzei,or on their positions within *** findings suggest rainfall is not a serious hazard for *** thrips can survive raindrop collisions during flight,as impacts with water droplets are not expected to break the surface tension.

Pnpt1 mediates NLRP3 inflammasome activation by MAVS and metabolic reprogramming in macrophages

Polyribonucleotide nucleotidyltransferase 1(Pnpt1)plays critical roles in mitochondrial homeostasis by controlling mitochondrial RNA(mt-RNA)processing,trafficking and ***1 deficiency results in mitochondrial dysfunction that triggers a type I interferon response,suggesting a role in ***,the role of Pnpt1 in inflammasome activation remains largely *** this study,we generated myeloid-specific Pnpt1-knockout mice and demonstrated that Pnpt1 depletion enhanced interleukin-1 beta(IL-1β)and interleukin-18(IL-18)secretion in a mouse sepsis *** cultured peritoneal and bone marrow-derived macrophages,we demonstrated that Pnpt1 regulated NLRP3 inflammasome-dependent IL-1βrelease in response to lipopolysaccharide(LPS),followed by nigericin,ATP or poly(I:c)***1 deficiency in macrophages increased glycolysis after LPS administration and mt-reactive oxygen species(mt-ROS)after NLRP3 inflammasome ***1 activation of the inflammasome was dependent on increased glycolysis and the expression of mitochondrial antiviral-signaling protein(MAVS)but not NF-κB ***,these data suggest that Pnpt1 is an important mediator of inflammation,as shown by activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome in murine sepsis and cultured macrophages.
