Spatio-temporal variability in sea surface wind stress near and off the east coast of Korea

Sea surface wind stress variabilities near and off the east coast of Korea, are examined using 7 kinds of wind datasets from measurements at 2 coastal (land) stations and 2 ocean buoys,satellite scatterometer (QuikSCAT), and global reanalyzed products (ECMWF,NOGAPS,and NCEP/NCAR). Temporal variabilities are analyzed at 3 frequency bands; synoptic (2-20 d), intra-seasonal (20-90 d),and seasonal (>90 d).Synoptic and intra-seasonal variations are predominant near and off the Donghae City due to the passage of the mesoscale weather system. Seasonal variation is caused by southeastward wind stress during Asian winter monsoon. The sea surface wind stress from reanalyzed *** and KMA-B measurements off the coast show good agreement in the magnitude and direction,which are strongly aligned with the alongshore *** the land-based sites,wind stresses are much weaker by factors of 3-10 due to the mountainous landmass on the east parts of Korea *** first EOF modes(67%-70%) of wind stresses from reanalyzed and QuikSCAT data have similar structures of the strong southeastward wind stress in winter along the coast but show different curl structures at scales less than 200 km due to the orographic *** second EOF modes (23%-25%) show southwestward wind stress in every September along the east coast of the North Korea

Mechanically reconfigurable architectured graphene for tunable plasmonic resonances

Graphene nanostructures with complex geometries have been widely explored for plasmonic applications,as their plasmonic resonances exhibit high spatial confinement and gate ***,edge effects in graphene and the narrow range over which plasmonic resonances can be tuned have limited the use of graphene in optical and optoelectronic *** we present a novel approach to achieve mechanically reconfigurable and strongly resonant plasmonic structures based on crumpled *** calculations show that mechanical reconfiguration of crumpled graphene structures enables broad spectral tunability for plasmonic resonances from mid-to nearinfrared,acting as a new tuning knob combined with conventional electrostatic ***,a continuous sheet of crumpled graphene shows strong confinement of plasmons,with a high near-field intensity enhancement of~1×10^(4).Finally,decay rates for a dipole emitter are significantly enhanced in the proximity of finite-area biaxially crumpled graphene *** findings indicate that crumpled graphene provides a platform to engineer graphenebased plasmonics through broadband manipulation of strong plasmonic resonances.

Automatic Discontinuity Classification of Wind-turbine Blades Using A-scan-based Convolutional Neural Network

Recent development trends in wind power generation have increased the importance of the safe operation of wind-turbine blades(WTBs). To realize this objective, it is essential to inspect WTBs for any defects before they are placed into operation. however, conventional methods of fault inspection in WTBs can be rather difficult to implement, since complex curvatures that characterize the WTB structures must ensure accurate and reliable inspection. Moreover, it is considered useful if inspection results can be objectively and consistently classified and analyzed by an automated system and not by the subjective judgment of an inspector. To address this concern,the construction of a pressure-and shape-adaptive phased-array ultrasonic testing platform, which is controlled by a nanoengine operation system to inspect WTBs for internal defects, has been presented in this paper. An automatic classifier has been designed to detect discontinuities in WTBs by using an A-scanimaging-based convolutional neural network(CNN). The proposed CNN classifier design demonstrates a classification accuracy of nearly 99%. Results of the study demonstrate that the proposed CNN classifier is capable of automatically classifying the discontinuities of WTB with high accuracy, all of which could be considered as defect candidates.

Variability and Risk Analysis of hong Kong Air Quality Based on Monsoon and El Nino Conditions

This study presents an exploratory analysis aimed at improving understanding of the variability of hong Kong air quality associated with different climate conditions. Significantly negative correlations were found when Nifio 3 led particulate matter 〈10 p.m PM10） and NO2 by 2 3 months over the hong Kong territory, while the other pollutants （e.g., Oa, SO2） showed modest correlations. A significant decreasing trend in visibility was observed during the autumn and winter, which has potential implications for the air-quality degradation and the endangerment of human health in hong Kong. In an E1 Nifio summer, the visibility was relatively better, while visibility in other seasons was diminished. On the other hand, in La Nifia events, significant changes occurred in visibility in winter and autumn. Air pollution indices were less sensitive to the South China Summer Monsoon （SCSM）, but a relatively high correlation existed between the East Asian Winter Monsoon （EAWM） and air pollutants. Rainfall was lower during most of the strong EAWM years compared to the weak years. This result suggests that the pollutants that accumulate in hong Kong are not easy to wash out, so concentrations remain at a higher level. Finally, based on the conditional Air Pollution Index （API） risk assessment, site-specific vulnerabilities were analyzed to facilitate the development of the air-quality warning systems in hong Kong.

Evaluation of a concept-based physical education unit for energy balance education

Background:Physical education(PE)is a key channel that impacts children's decisions and behaviors for healthful *** study evaluated the effects of a concept-based PE(CBPE)instructional unit,featured by energy balance(EB)education,on students'knowledge learning,situational interest,cognitive,and physical engagements as well as teachers'***:Fourth and 5th grade students(n=468)in a mid-western state of the United States were recruited as the *** elementary schools were randomized to the CBPE or control ***'EB knowledge,situational interest,cognitive engagement,and physical engagement were measured by a knowledge test,the Situational Interest Scale—Elementary,written task sheets,and accelerometers,respectively,while teachers'perceptions of the CBPE unit were captured by individual interviews at the end of the ***:The CBPE group showed a significant increase in EB knowledge,while the control did *** groups showed a similar increasing trend for situational interest over time,although the statistical results favored the control *** physical engagement,the CBPE group demonstrated a statistically different but substantively similar level of in-class physical activity compared to the control *** CBPE group also showed a moderate level of cognitive engagement throughout the *** PE teachers reported overall positive perceptions about teaching the CBPE ***:These results support the utility of the CBPE unit in enhancing EB education along with facilitating positive student interest and engagement as well as positive teaching experiences.

Virtual Mold Technique in Thermal Stress Analysis during Casting Process

It is important to analyse the casting product and the mold at the same time considering thermal contraction of the casting and thermal expansion of the mold. The analysis considering contact of the casting and the mold induces the precise prediction of stress distribution and the defect such as hot tearing. But it is difficult to generate FEM mesh for the interface of the casting and the mold. Moreover the mesh for the mold domain spends lots of computational time and memory for the analysis due to a number of meshes. Consequently we proposed the virtual mold technique which only uses mesh of the casting part for thermal stress analysis in casting process. The spring bar element in virtual mold technique is used to consider the contact of the casting and the mold. In general, a volume of the mold is much bigger than that of casting part, so the proposed technique decreases the number of mesh and saves the computational memory and time greatly. In this study, the proposed technique was verified by the comparison with the traditional contact technique on a specimen. And the proposed technique gave satisfactory results.

The effects of lntcr-ckxttxxk insertion on the performance of a hollow--electrode plasma torch have been investigated by numerical *** results revealed that when inter-dcctrodes arc inserted,the arc voltages and plasma powers increase due to the increase in the arc *** addition,it was predicted that thermal efficiency can be improved with the increase in plasma power by injecting plasma gases through the gaps between *** unique effects of inter-electrode insertion arc a result of the plasma temperatures adjusting themselves to increase arc voltages when the arc column is contracted radially by increasing gas-flow rate or decreasing inter-electrcxk diameter.

Robotic cholecystectomy with new port sites

AIM:To introduce robotic cholecystectomy(RC) using new port sites on the low abdominal ***:From June 2010 to June 2011,a total of 178 RCs were performed at Ajou University Medical *** prospectively collected the set-up time(working time and docking time) and console time in all robotic ***:Eighty-three patients were male and 95 female;the age ranged from 18 to 72 years of age(mean 54.6 ± 15.0 years).All robotic procedures were successfully *** mean operation time was 52.4 ± 17.1 *** set-up time and console time were 11.9 ± 5.4 min(5-43 min) and 15.1 ± 8.0 min(4-50 min),*** conversion rate to laparoscopic or open procedures was *** complication rate was 0.6%(n = 1,bleeding).There was no bile duct injury or *** mean hospital stay was 1.4 ± 1.1 *** was a significant correlation between the console time and white blood cell count(r = 0.033,P = 0.015).In addition,the higher the white blood cell count(more than 10000),the longer the console ***:Robotic cholecystectomy using new port sites on the low abdominal area can be safely and efficiently performed,with sufficient patient satisfaction.

A study on effects of ceramic foam filter on flow aspect through water modeling experiment

Casting defects that are closely related to entrapped air bubbles and metallic oxides occur very frequently in the sand mold casting process. Many researchers have shown that these defects can be reduced by adopting an appropriate gating system design. however, it is difficult for field engineers to identify a specific gating system that is more appropriate for their products. In this study, we tried to draw a comparison between two gating system designs with and without a ceramic foam filter. The ceramic foam filter was added to the horizontal runner just after the down sprue to prevent air bubble generation and reduce turbulence without a change of gating system design. The water modeling experiment was conducted with four different amounts of the initial volumes of water in the reservoir to verify the effects of initial pouring velocity. The results of the experiment applying the filter showed remarkably changed flow characteristics. The use of the filter was found to convert the flow pattern of water in the desired direction. The ceramic foam filter performed well to reduce flow velocity and stabilize the water *** flow pattern without a filter can be improved significantly even with the the use of just a 10 PPI irregular filter. Although the study confirmed that use of the filter may change the flow characteristics, it needs to be noted that the use of the ceramic filter alone cannot solve all the problems caused by a poorly designed gating system.

Revisiting the Climatology of Atmospheric Blocking in the Northern Hemisphere

In addition to the occurrence of atmospheric blocking, the climatology of the characteristics of blocking events, including duration, intensity, and extension, in four seasons over the Northern Hemisphere was analyzed for the period 1950-2009. The seasonality and spatial variations of these characteristics were studied according to their longitudinal distributions. In general, there were sharp discrepancies in the blocking characteristics between winter and summer, and these differences were more prominent over the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The blocking not only occurred more frequently but also underwent stronger amplification in winter; likewise, the blocking occurred less frequently and underwent weaker amplification in summer. There are very strong interrelationships among different blocking characteristics, suggesting that they are supported by similar physical factors. In addition, the relationship between blocking over different regions and East Asian circulation was examined. Ural-Siberia is a major blocking formation region in all seasons that may exert a downstream impact on East Asia. The impact is generally weak in summer, which is due to its lower intensity and smaller duration. however, the extratropical circulation over East Asia in summer can be disturbed persistently by the frequent occurrence of blocking over the Asian continent or the Western Pacific. In particular, the blocking frequency over the Western Pacific significantly increased during the study period. This climatological information provides a background for studying the impact of blocking on East Asian circulation under both present and future climate conditions.
