Improving toughness of medium-Mn steels after friction stir welding through grain morphology tuning

This work demonstrated the viability of friction stir welding for the welding of medium-Mn steels when used as cryogenic vessel materials for liquefied gas *** used an intercritically annealed Fe-7 Mn-0.2 C-3 Al(wt.%)steel with a dual-phase(α'martensite andγ_(R) retained austenite)nanolaminate structure as a base material and systematically compared its microstructure and impact toughness after friction stir and tungsten inert gas *** friction stir welded specimen exhibited a large amount ofγ_(R) phase owing to a relatively low temperature during welding,whereas the tungsten inert gas welded specimen comprised only theα'***,the friction stir welded steel exhibited a tuned morphology of nanoscale globular microstructure at the weld zone and did not exhibit any prior austenite grain boundary due to active recrystallization caused by deformation during *** preserved fraction ofγ_(R) and morphological tuning in the weldment improved the impact toughness of the friction stir welded steel at low *** the steel processed by tungsten inert gas welding,the notch crack propagated rapidly along the prior austenite grain boundaries-weakened by Mn and P segregations-resulting in poor impact ***,the friction stir welded steel exhibited a higher resistance against notch crack propagation due to the slow crack propagation along the ultrafine ferrite/ferrite(α/α)interfaces,damage tolerance by the active transformation-induced plasticity from the large amount ofγR,and enhanced boundary cohesion by suppressed Mn and P segregations.

Postoperative changes of manometry after restorative proctocolectomy in Korean ulcerative colitis patients

AIM To investigate the changes of postoperative anal sphincter function and bowel frequency in Korean patients with ulcerative colitis(UC).METHODS A total of 127 patients with UC who underwent restorative proctocolectomy(RPC) during 20 years were retrospectively analyzed. The parameters of anal manometry and bowel frequency were compared according to the 6-mo intervals until 24 mo postoperatively. Manometry was used to measure the maximal squeezing pressure(MSP) and maximal resting pressure(MRP).RESULTS MSP decreased after surgery until 6 mo(157 to 142 mm Hg); thereafter, it improved and was recovered to and maintained at the preoperative value at 12 mo postoperatively(142-170 mm Hg, P < 0.001). Although the decreased MRP(65 to 56 mm Hg) improved after 18 mo(62 mm Hg), it did not completely recover to the preoperative value. The decreased rectal capacity after surgery(90 to 82 m L) gradually increased up to 150 m L at 24 mo. Although bowel frequency showed significant gradual decreases at each interval, it was stabilized after 12 mo postoperatively(6.5 times/d).CONCLUSION Postoperative changes of manometry and bowel frequency after restorative proctocolectomy in Korean patients with UC were not different from those in Western patients with UC.

Intestinal endometriosis:Diagnostic ambiguities and surgical outcomes

BACKGROUND Endometriosis is a common disease for women of reproductive age. However,when it involves intestines, it is difficult to diagnose preoperatively because its symptoms overlap with other diseases and the results of evaluations can be unspecific. Thus it is important to know the clinical characteristics of intestinal endometriosis and how to exactly *** To analyze patients in whom intestinal endometriosis was diagnosed after surgical treatments, and to evaluate the clinical characteristics of preoperatively misdiagnosed *** We retrospectively reviewed the pathologic reports of 30 patients diagnosed as having intestinal endometriosis based on surgical specimens between January2000 and December 2017. We reviewed their clinical characteristics and surgical *** Twenty-three(76.6%) patients showed symptoms associated with endometriosis,with dysmenorrhea being the most common(n = 9, 30.0%). Thirteen patients(43.3%) had a history of pelvic surgeries. Ten patients(33.3%) had a history of treatment for endometriosis. Only 4 patients(13.3%) had a diagnosis of endometriosis based on endoscopic biopsy findings. According to preoperative evaluations, 13 patients(43.3%) had an initial diagnosis of pelvic endometriosis and 17 patients(56.6%) were misdiagnosed as having other diseases. The most common misdiagnosis was submucosal tumor in the large intestine(n = 8, 26.7%),followed by malignancies of the colon/rectum(n = 3, 10.0%) and ovary(n = 3,10.0%). According to the Clavien-Dindo classification, 5 complications were grade I or II and 2 complications were grade IIIa. A strategy for fabricating microcrystalline cellulose–Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x)(MCC–MXene)nanocomposite films with high relative permittivity,high thermal conductivity,and excellent mechanical properties was *** MCC–MXene nanocomposite film was fabricated by casting a solution containing N,N-dimethylacetamide/lithium chloride(DMAc/LiCl)-soluble MCC and DMAcdispersible MXene nanosheets,followed by humidity control *** MXene nanosheets greatly enhanced the permittivity of the nanocomposite films owing to interfacial ***,the nanocomposite film with 20 wt.%MXene content achieved a desirable permittivity of 71.4 at 102 Hz(a 770%improvement against that of neat cellulose),while the dielectric loss only increased by 1.8 times(from 0.39 to 0.70).The obtained nanocomposite films with 20 wt.%and 30 wt.%MXene exhibited remarkable in-plane thermal conductivities of 8.523 and 9.668 W∙m^(−1)∙K^(−1),respectively,owing to the uniform dispersion and selfalignment of the MXene layered ***,the uniformly dispersed MXene nanosheets in the MCC network with interfacial interaction(hydrogen bonding)and mechanical entanglement endowed the nanocomposite films with excellent mechanical properties and ***,the thermal stability,water resistance,and antibacterial properties of the nanocomposite films were effectively improved with the introduction of ***,using DMAc/LiCl as the solvent system not only improves the compatibility between MCC and MXene but also avoids the problem of easy oxidation of MXene in aqueous *** the high stability of the MCC–MXene solution and enhanced properties of the MCC–MXene films,the proposed strategy manifests great potential for fabricating natural biomass-based dielectric materials.

Abstinence from prolonged psychostimulant use prompts stimulant withdrawal *** adaptations within the dorsal striatum have been considered the main hallmark of stimulant abstinence. Here we explored striatal miRNA-target interaction and its impact on circulating miRNA marker as well as behavioral dysfunctions in methamphetamine(MA) abstinence. We conducted miRNA sequencing and profiling in the nonhuman primate model of MA abstinence, followed by miRNA qPCR,LC-MS/MS proteomics, immunoassays, and behavior tests in mice. In nonhuman primates, MA abstinence triggered a lasting upregulation of miR-137 in the dorsal striatum but a simultaneous downregulation of circulating miR-137. In mice, aberrant increase in striatal miR-137-dependent inhibition of SYNCRIP essentially mediated the MA abstinence-induced reduction of circulating miR-137. Pathway modeling through experimental deduction illustrated that the MA abstinence-mediated downregulation of circulating miR-137 was caused by reduction of SYNCRIP-dependent miRNA sorting into the exosomes in the dorsal striatum. Furthermore, diminished SYNCRIP in the dorsal striatum was necessary for MA abstinence-induced behavioral bias towards egocentric spatial learning. Taken together, our data revealed circulating miR-137 as a potential blood-based marker that could reflect MA abstinence-dependent changes in striatal miR-137/SYNCRIP axis, and striatal SYNCRIP as a potential therapeutic target for striatum-associated cognitive dysfunction by MA withdrawal syndrome.
