The challenge in the practical application of rocking foundations is the estimation of its performance,particularly the rotation angle,during a strong *** this study,the dynamic rocking behavior for a shallow foundation considering structural response was evaluated through two analytical approaches:the conventional soil-foundation-structure interaction(SFSI)governing equation of a single-degree-of-freedom(SDOF)structure on a rocking shallow foundation,and the Housner rocking model(i.e.,a rocking rigid block on a rigid base).Both approaches were validated with dynamic centrifuge *** test models consisted of a soft soil deposit,a shallow rectangular foundation,and an SDOF structure dominated by a bending behavior.A total of 11 foundation-structure systems and six seismic waves,including recorded earthquake signals and sinusoidal waves,were *** results showed that the conventional SFSI equation well predicted the maximum rotation during strong ***,this method was less accurate regarding the rotational phase information and maximum rotation of the foundation during weak *** the other hand,although the modified Housner′s rocking model required five parameters relevant to a soil-foundation-structure system,it overestimated the maximum rotation of the foundation when compared with the results from dynamic centrifuge tests.

Sorption by soil organic matter(SOM)is considered the most important process affecting the bioavailability of hydrophobic organic chemicals(HOCs)in *** sorption capacity of SOM for HOCs is affected by many environmental *** this study,we investigated the effects of soil pH and water saturation level on HOC sorption capacity of SOM using batch sorption *** of soil organic carbon-water partition coefficient(K_(OC))of six selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)were measured in an artificial soil under various soil pH and water saturation *** sampling was used to measure K_(OC)with polydimethylsiloxane as the sampling *** of soil pH,K_(OC)increased with increasing soil water saturation level for lower-molecular-weight *** contrast,K_(OC)decreased with increasing soil water saturation level for higher-molecular-weight *** some fluctuations,K_(OC)tended to decrease with increasing soil pH at all water saturation *** indicates that earlier studies on the effects of soil pH on K_(OC)under saturated conditions could be extended to unsaturated *** K_(OC)tendencies were reproduced in three different natural soils,suggesting that the effects of soil water saturation level and pH might be generalized,at least for *** PAH sorption capacity of SOM was found to be resilient under dynamic soil pH conditions,which can be used to adjust the effects of soil pH.

AIM: To clarify the mechanism underlying the anti-mutagenic and anti-cancer activities of Scorpio water extract (SWE). METHODS: Human hepatoma HepG2 cells were incubated with various concentrations of SWE. After 24-h incubation, cytotoxicity and apoptosis evaluations were determined by MTT and DNA fragmentation assay, respectively. After treatment with SWE, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) was determined by measuring the retention of the dye 3,3'-dihexyloxacarbocyanine (DiOC6(3)) and the protein expression including cytochrome C and poly-(ADPribose) polymerase (PARP) were measured by Western blotting. Caspase-3 and -9 enzyme activities were measured using specific fluorescence dyes such as Ac-DEVD-AFC and Ac-LEHD-AFC. RESULTS: We found that treatment with SWE induced apoptosis as confirmed by discontinuous DNA fragmentation in cultured human hepatoma HepG2 cells. Our investigation also showed that SWE-induced apoptosis of HepG2 cells were associated with intracellular events including disruption of MMP, increased translocation of cytochrome C from mitochondria to cytosol, activation of caspase-3, and PARP. Pre-treatment of N-acetyl-Asp-Glu-Val-Asp-CHO (Ac-DEVD-CHO), a caspase-3 specific inhibitor, or cyclosporin A (CsA), an inhibitor of MMP disruption, completely abolished SWE-induced DNA fragmentation. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that SWE possibly causes mitochondrial damage, leading to cytochrome C release into cytosol and activation of caspases resulting in PARP cleavage and execution of apoptotic cell death in HepG2 cells. These results further suggest that Scorpio may be a valuable agent of therapeutic intervention of human hepatomas.

Arterioportal shunt(APS) is an organic communication between the hepatic arterial system and the portal venous system. The APS is one of the major causes of transient hepatic attenuation differences on dynamic computed tomography(CT) or magnetic resonance imaging(MRI). This condition is usually associated with trauma,liver cirrhosis,and malignancies of the liver. However,there has been no report about oxaliplatininduced APS. A 41-year-old male was diagnosed with Stage ⅢB gastric cancer. The patient initially underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy with capecitabine and oxaliplatin After 3 cycles of therapy,the mass had markedly decreased,and a total gastrectomy with splenectomy was performed. Since the malignancy was locally invasive,the patient was continued on the same regimen of the adjuvant chemotherapy. After 3 more cycles,a computed tomography revealed a 1 cm sized arterial-enhancing nodule in the right lobe of the liver. An MRI revealed an arterial enhancing lesion,and a positron emission tomography CT scan showed a hypermetabolic lesion in the same portion of the liver. We tried to perform a liver biopsy; however,an ultrasonography could not detect any mass. A presumptive diagnosis of an APS due to a recurred cancer was made. We found a similar but slightly different case report of an oxaliplatin-induced liver injury,mimicking a metastatic tumor on an MRI. Based on a prior report,the patient was continuedon treatment with adjuvant chemotherapy following discontinuation of oxaliplatin. After 2 cycles,the arterial enhancing liver mass resolved,supporting the final diagnosis of an APS,related to oxaliplatin-induced sinusoidal injury. The patient has not experienced any a relapse after two years of additional follow up recurrent gastric cancer upon interpretation of multiple imaging modalities.

AIM： To clarify the mechanism underlying the antidiabetic activities of cortex cinnamomi extract （CCE）. METHODS： To induce in vivo diabetes, mice were injected with streptozotocin （STZ） via a tail vein （100 mg STZ/kg body weight）. To determine the effects of CCE, mice were administered CCE twice daily for 7 d by oral gavage starting 1 wk before the STZ injection. Blood glucose and plasma insulin concentration were measured as an index of diabetes. Also, to induce cytotoxicity of RINm5F cells, we treated with cytokines （IL-1β （2.0 ng/mL） and IFN-γ （100 U/mL））. Cell viability and nitric oxide production were measured colorimetrically. Inducible nitric oxide synthase （iNOS） mRNA and protein expression were determined by RT-PCR and Western blotting, respectively. The activation of NF-κβ was assayed by using gel mobility shift assays of nuclear extracts. RESULTS： Treatment of mice with STZ resulted in hyperglycemia and hypoinsulinemia, which was further evidenced by immunohistochemical staining of islets. However, the diabetogenic effects of STZ were completely prevented when mice were pretreated with CCE. The inhibitory effect of CCE on STZ-induced hyperglycemia was mediated through the suppression of iNOS expression. In rat insulinoma RINm5F cells,CCE completely protected against interleukin-1β and interferon-y-mediated cytotoxicity. Moreover, RINm5F cells incubated with CCE showed significant reductions in interleukin-1β and interferon-y-induced nitric oxide production and in iNOS mRNA and protein expression, and these findings correlated well with in vivo observations. CONCLUSION： The molecular mechanism by which CCE inhibits iNOS gene expression appears to involve the inhibition of NF-κβ activation, These results reveal the possible therapeutic value of CCE for the prevention of diabetes mellitus progression,

BACKGROUND Mucinous adenocarcinomas of the buttock are rare and have an uncertain etiology and natural *** are usually related to chronic anal fistulas,hidradenitis suppurativa,or Crohn's ***,we report a case of mucinous adenocarcinoma associated with hidradenitis and contradictory immunochemistry *** SUMMARY A 62-year-old man complained of recurrent abscesses of the buttock for 3 *** had several scars and nodules in bilateral buttocks,with purulent *** skin lesions did not appear to originate from the *** patient was diagnosed with recurrent abscesses due to hidradenitis suppurativa at the first *** showed purulent and subsequent mucin discharge in the first operation and was diagnosed with mucinous *** examinations were performed to determine disease origin and *** were no significant findings or evidence of anal ***,he underwent wide local excision and V-Y advancement flap in the second *** final diagnosis was mucinous adenocarcinoma without any evidence of anal *** immunochemistry test results were negative for cytokeratin(CK)7 and positive for CK20 and CDX2,with a colorectal origin.A pathologist suggested that the disease originated from a chronic anal *** patient has remained free of recurrence for 24 *** Although the patient with mucinous adenocarcinoma showed an atypical course,immunochemistry helped detect the disease origin.

Because total UV （TUV） in the UV-A region is 100 times higher than in the UV-B region, UV-A is a considerable compo- nent when calculating erythemal UV （EUV） and UV-index. The ratio of EUV to TUV in the UV-A value [EUV（A）/TUV（A）] is investigated to convert the EUV（A） from TUV（A） for broadband observation. The representative value of EUV（A）/TUV（A）, from the simulation study, is 6.9 × 10^- 4 changing from 6.1 ×10^-4 to 7.0 × 10^ -4 as aerosol optical depth, total ozone and solar zenith angle change. By adopting the observational data of EUV（B） and TUV（A） from UV-biometer measurements at Yonsei University [（37.57°N, 126.95°E）, 84 m above sea level], the EUV irradiance increases to 15% of EUV（B） due to the consideration of EUV（A） from the data of TUV（A） observation. Compared to the total EUV observed from the Brewer spec- trophotometer at the same site, the EUV（B） from the UV-biometer observes only 95% of total EUV, and its underestimation is caused by neglecting the effect of UV-A. However, the sum of EUV（B） and EUV（A） [EUV（A＋B）] from two UV-biometers is 10% larger than the EUV from the Brewer spectrophotometer because of the spectral overlap effect in the range 320-340 nm. The correction factor for the overlap effect adjusts 8% of total EUV.

To facilitate gathering information during a psychiatric interview, some psychiatrists advocate augmenting the interview using drugs. Rather than barbiturates, benzodiazepines have been used for drug-assisted interviews. Dissociative amnesia is one of the indications for these interviews. Herein, we present the case of a 15-year-old female who was diagnosed as having dissociative amnesia because of conflicts with her friends. She was administered a Iorazepam-assisted interview to aid recovery of her memories. In this case, a small dose of Iorazepam was sufficient to recover her memories without any adverse effects.

AIM: Taraxacum officinale (TO) has been frequently used as a remedy for inflammatory diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of TO on cholecystokinin (CCK)-octapeptide-induced acute pancreatitis in ***: TO at 10 mg/kg was orally administered, followed by 75 μg/kg CCK octapeptide injected subcutaneously three times after 1, 3 and 5 h. This whole procedure was repeated for 5 d. We determined the pancreatic weight/body weight ratio, the levels of pancreatic HSP60 and HSP72, and the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Repeated CCK octapeptide treatment resulted in typical laboratory and morphological changes of experimentally-induced ***: TO significantly decreased the pancreatic weight/body weight ratio in CCK octapeptide-induced acute pancreatitis. TO also increased the pancreatic levels of HSP60 and HSP72. Additionally, the secretion of IL-6 and TNF-α decreased in the animals treated with ***: TO may have a protective effect against CCK octapeptide-induced acute pancreatitis.
