BACKGROUND There are limited data on the use of glucose transport protein 1(GLUT-1)expre-ssion as a biomarker for predicting lymph node metastasis in patients with colorectal ***-1 and GLUT-3,hexokinase(HK)-II,and hypoxia-induced factor(HIF)-1 expressions may be useful biomarkers for detecting primary tumors and lymph node metastasis when combined with fluorodeoxyglucose(FDG)uptake on positron emission tomography/computed tomography(PET/CT).AIM To evaluate GLUT-1,GLUT-3,HK-II,and HIF-1 expressions as biomarkers for detecting primary tumors and lymph node metastasis with 18F-FDG-PET/*** This retrospective study included 169 patients with colorectal cancer who underwent colectomy and preoperative 18F-FDG-PET/CT at Chungbuk National University hospital between January 2009 and May *** tissue cores from the central and peripheral areas of the tumors were obtained and were examined by a dedicated pathologist,and the expressions of GLUT-1,GLUT-3,HK-II,and HIF-1 were determined using immunohisto-chemical *** analyzed the correlations among their expressions,various clinicopathological factors,and the maximum standardized uptake value(SUVmax)of PET/*** GLUT-1 was found at the center or periphery of the tumors in 109(64.5%)of the 169 ***-1 positivity was significantly correlated with the SUVmax of the primary tumor and lymph nodes,regardless of the biopsy site(tumor center,Phould consider GLUT-1 expression in preoperative endoscop

A biosynthetic gene cluster for the bioactive fungal sesterterpenoids variecolin(1)and variecolactone(2)was identified in Aspergillus aculeatus ATCC *** production of 1 and 2 was achieved in Aspergillus oryzae by expressing the sesterterpene synthase VrcA and the cytochrome P450 ***,the replacement of VrcB with homologous P450s from other fungal terpenoid pathways yielded three new variecolin analogues(5-7).Analysis of the compounds’anticancer activity in vitro and in vivo revealed that although 5 and 1 had comparable activities,5 was associated with significantly reduced toxic side effects in cancer-bearing mice,indicating its potentially broader therapeutic *** study describes the first tests of variecolin and its analogues in animals and demonstrates the utility of synthetic biology for creating molecules with improved biological activities.

Possibility of Solid Hydrometeor Growth Zone Identification Using Radar Spectrum Width

In this study,the correlation between simulated and measured radar velocity spectrum width(σ_(v))is *** results show that the dendrites growth zones(DGZs)and needles growth zones(NGZs)mostly contain dendrites(DN)and needles(NE),***σ_(v) zones(1.11.2 m s^(-1),a differential reflectivity(ZDR)higher than 0 dB,and a cross-correlation coefficient(ρhv)less than *** contrast,prolate particles with relatively uniform shapes were observed in the NGZ withσ_(v)how that the DN exhibited a largerσ_(v) compared to the NE,and this observedσ_(v) was strongly dependent on the wind fluctuations(v’)due to turbulence or wind *** contrast,the NE exhibited a significantly smallσ_(v)~0.55 m s^(-1),which converges irrespective of v’.In addition,a strong correlation between the measuredσ_(v) values at five radar elevation angles(θ=6.2°,9.1°,13.1°,19°,and 80°)and those simulated in this study confirmed the significance of the analysis results.

Barrett’s esophagus:Review of natural history and comparative efficacy of endoscopic and surgical therapies

Barrett's esophagus(BE)is the precursor to esophageal adenocarcinoma(EAC).Progression to cancer typically occurs in a stepwise fashion through worsening dysplasia and ultimately,invasive *** EAC with deep involvement of the esophageal wall and/or metastatic disease is invariably associated with poor long-term survival *** guides the rationale of surveillance of Barrett’s in an attempt to treat lesions at an earlier,and potentially curative *** last two decades have seen a paradigm shift in management of Barrett’s with rapid expansion in the role of endoscopic eradication therapy(EET)for management of dysplastic and early neoplastic BE,and there have been substantial changes to international consensus guidelines for management of early BE based on evolving *** review aims to assist the physician in the therapeutic decision-making process with patients by comprehensive review and summary of literature surrounding natural history of Barrett’s by histological stage,and the effectiveness of interventions in attenuating the risk posed by its natural *** findings were as ***-dysplastic Barrett’s is associated with extremely low risk of progression,and interventions cannot be *** annual risk of cancer progression in low grade dysplasia is between 1%-3%;EET can be offered though evidence for its benefit remains confined to highly select ***-grade dysplasia progresses to cancer in 5%-10%per year;EET is similarly effective to and less morbid than surgery and should be routinely performed for this *** of nodal metastases in intramucosal cancer is 2%-4%,which is comparable to operative mortality rate,so EET is usually *** cancer is associated with nodal metastases in 14%-41%hence surgery remains standard of care,except for select situations.

Introducing Ni in Ru oxide is a promising approach to enhance the catalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction(OER).however,the role of Ni(which has a poor intrinsic activity)is not fully ***,a Ru NiO_(x)electrode fabricated via a modified dip coating method exhibited excellent OER performance in acidic media,and neutral media for CO_(2)reduction *** combined in-situ/operando X-ray absorption near-edge structure and on-line inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry studies to unveil the role of the Ni introduced in the Ru *** propose that the Ni not only transforms the electronic structure of the Ru oxide,but also produces a large number of oxygen vacancies by distorting the oxygen lattice structure at low overpotentials,increasing the participation of lattice oxygen for *** work demonstrates the real behavior of bimetallic oxide materials under applied potentials and provides new insights into the development of efficient electrocatalysts.

Healthy chickens are necessary to meet the ever-increasing demand for poultry *** are subjected to numerous stressful conditions under commercial rearing systems,including variations in the envi-ronmental ***,it is difficult to counter the effects of global warming on the livestock *** environmental temperature is a stressful condition that has detrimental effects on growth and production performance,resulting in decreased feed intake,retarded growth,compromised gut health,enhanced oxidative stress,and altered immune *** approaches include nutritional modification and housing management to mitigate the harmful effects of hot ***,broiler chickens are more susceptible to heat stress(HS)than layer chickens because of their high muscle mass and metabolic *** this review,we explored the possibility of in ovo manipulation to combat HS in broiler *** their short lifespan from hatching to market age,embryonic life is thought to be one of the critical periods for achieving these *** embryos can be modulated through either temperature treatment or nourishment to improve thermal tolerance during the rearing *** first provided a brief overview of the harmful effects of HS on *** in-depth evaluation was then presented for in ovo feeding and thermal manipulation as emerging strategies to combat the negative effects of ***,we evaluated a combination of the two methods using the available *** together,these investigations suggest that embryonic manipulation has the po-tential to confer heat resistance in chickens.

Wintertime suspended sediment simulation in the Huanghai and East China Seas

A simulation of suspended sediment movement relating to tidal and wave forcing during a winter monsoon in November 1983 in the Huanghai and East China Seas continental shelf is attempted by using the model describing the cohesive/non-cohesive sediment resus-pension generated by interactions between currents and *** simulation showed that sediment concentration was increased by resuspension at shallow depths during the strong storm conditions due to high bottom stress interacted between currents and waves. This result is in general agreement with observations in horizontal distribution of suspended sediment distribution. At three current meter mooring positions off the southern Shandong Peninsula resuspension occurred only at a depth of 22 m,nearest coastal position and at deeper parts at depths of 51 and 80 m wave-current interaction effects were not significant. It has shown that the present model simulation demonstrated the capability of reproduction of suspended sediment movement under wintertime extreme event reasonably well.

Projections of ocean climate for northwestern Pacific Ocean

The long-term adjustment processes of atmosphere and ocean in response to gradually increased atmospheric CO2 concentration have been analyzed in 70 and 140 a integrations with NCAR fully-coupled climate system model (CSM). In these experiments the CO2 concentration has been increased to double and quadruples the initial concentration, respectively. After 70 a, at the time of CO2 doubling, the model predicts surface air temperature rises by 1.2 and 1.5 K for the globe and the northwestern Pacific Ocean, respectively. The behavior of the quadrupling run is similar: each global and regional mean surface air temperatures increase by 2.8 and 3.0 K at the time of CO2 quadrupling. From the experiments, surface air temperature changes in the northwestern Pacific Ocean will be more distinctive compared with the global average, mainly due to exceptionally large wanning and sea level change near the entrance of the Kuroshio extension.

User Recognition System Based on Spectrogram Image Conversion Using EMG Signals

Recently,user recognitionmethods to authenticate personal identity has attracted significant attention especially with increased availability of various internet of things(IoT)services through fifth-generation technology(5G)based mobile *** EMG signals generated inside the body with unique individual characteristics are being studied as a part of nextgeneration user recognition ***,there is a limitation when applying EMG signals to user recognition systems as the same operation needs to be repeated while maintaining a constant strength of muscle over ***,it is necessary to conduct research on multidimensional feature transformation that includes changes in frequency features over *** this paper,we propose a user recognition system that applies EMG signals to the short-time fourier transform(STFT),and converts the signals into EMG spectrogram images while adjusting the time-frequency resolution to extract multidimensional *** proposed system is composed of a data pre-processing and normalization process,spectrogram image conversion process,and final classification *** experimental results revealed that the proposed EMG spectrogram image-based user recognition system has a 95.4%accuracy performance,which is 13%higher than the EMGsignal-based *** a user recognition accuracy improvement was achieved by using multidimensional features,in the time-frequency domain.
