Preclinical Long-term Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study of Silymarin Liver-protective Effects

Background and Aims:Efficacy evaluations with preclini-cal magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)are uncommon,but MRI in the preclinical phase of drug development provides information that is useful for longitudinal monitoring.The study aim was to monitor the protective effectiveness of silymarin with multiparameter MRI and biomarkers in a thioacetamide(TAA)-induced model of liver injury in rats.Correlation analysis was conducted to assess compare the monitoring of liver function by MRI and biomarkers.Meth-ods:TAA was injected three times a week for 8 weeks to generate a disease model(TAA group).In the TAA and sily-marin-treated(TAA-SY)groups,silymarin was administered three times weekly from week 4.MR images were acquired at 0,2,4,6,and 8 weeks in the control,TAA,and TAA-SY groups.Results:The area under the curve to maximum time(AUCtmax)and T_(2)*values of the TAA group decreased over the study period,but the serological markers of liver abnormality increased significantly more than those in the control group.In the TAA-SY group,MRI and serological biomarkers indicated attenuation of liver function as in the TAA group.However,pattern changes were observed from week 6 to comparable levels in the control group with si-lymarin treatment.Negative correlations between either AUCtmax or T_(2)*values and the serological biomarkers were observed.Conclusions:Silymarin had hepatoprotective effects on TAA-induced liver injury and demonstrated the usefulness of multiparametric MRI to evaluate efficacy in preclinical studies of liver drug development.

Phytogenic feed additives alleviate pathogenic Escherichia coli-induced intestinal damage through improving barrier integrity and inhibiting inflammation in weaned pigs

Background:This study was conducted to investigate the effects of each phytogenic feed additive(PFA;PFA1,bitter citrus extract;PFA2,a microencapsulated blend of thymol and carvacrol;PFA3,a mixture of bitter citrus extract,thymol,and carvacrol;PFA4,a premixture of grape seed,grape marc extract,green tea,and hops;PFA5,fenugreek seed powder)on the growth performance,nutrient digestibility,intestinal morphology,and immune response in weaned pigs infected with Escherichia coli(E.coli).Results:A total of 634-week-old weaned pigs were placed in individual metabolic cages and assigned to seven treatment groups.The seven treatments were as follows:1)NC;basal diet without E.coli challenge,2)PC;basal diet with E.coli challenge,3)T1;PC+0.04%PFA1,4)T2;PC+0.01%PFA2,5)T3;PC+0.10%PFA3,6)T4;PC+0.04%PFA4,7)T5;PC+0.10%PFA5.The experiments lasted in 21 d,including 7 d before and 14 d after the first E.coli challenge.In the E.coli challenge treatments,all pigs were orally inoculated by dividing a total of 10 mL of E.coli F18 for 3 consecutive days.The PFA-added groups significantly increased(P<0.05)average daily gain and feed efficiency and decreased(P<0.05)the fecal score at d 0 to 14 post-inoculation(PI).Tumor necrosis factorαwas significantly lower(P<0.05)in the PFA-added groups except for T1 in d 14 PI compared to the PC treatment.The T3 had a higher(P<0.05)immunoglobulin G and immunoglobulin A concentration compared to the PC treatment at d 7 PI.Also,T3 showed significantly higher(P<0.05)villus height:crypt depth and claudin 1 expression in ileal mucosa,and significantly downregulated(P<0.05)the expression of calprotectin compared to the PC treatment.Conclusions:Supplementation of PFA in weaned pigs challenged with E.coli alleviated the negative effects of E.coli and improved growth performance.Among them,the mixed additive of bitter citrus extract,thymol,and carvacrol showed the most effective results,improving immune response,intestinal morphology,and expression of tight junctions.

Effects of obesity on lower urinary tract symptoms in Korean BPH patients

We analyzed the effects of obesity on lower urinary tract symptoms （LUTSs） in Korean benign prostatic hyperplasia （BPH） patients. This is a multicenter, cross-sectional, prospective study conducted in four centers in Korea. A total of 602 men with LUTSs secondary to BPH were included. BPH/LUTSs cases were men aged ≥ 40 years with intemational prostate symptom scores （IPSS） ≥ 8 points. Height, weight and waist circumference were measured. Among the 602 patients, 156 patients had a waist circumference above 90 cm, representing central obesity, and 215 patients had a body mass index above 25 kg m2. Waist circumference was positively correlated with prostate volume （P = 0.034）. Men with waist circumference 〉 90 cm experienced a 1.36-fold increased risk of severe LUTSs （95% CI 0.82-2.41） compared with men with waist circumference ≤ 90 cm. Prostate volume was positively correlated with urgency and nocturia in men with central obesity. In this population of Korean men diagnosed with BPH, central obesity rather than overall obesity seems to be the more important predictor of LUTSs correlated with BPH.

Curative resection of leiomyosarcoma of the descending colon with metachronous liver metastasis: A case report

BACKGROUND Leiomyosarcoma(LMS)has a poor prognosis and rarely originates from the colon.If resection is possible,surgery is the first treatment most commonly considered.Unfortunately,no standard treatment exists for hepatic metastasis of LMS;although,several treatments,such as chemotherapy,radiotherapy,and surgery,have been used.Subsequently,the management of liver metastases remains controversial.CASE SUMMARY We present a rare case of metachronous liver metastasis in a patient with LMS originating from the descending colon.A 38-year-old man initially reported abdominal pain and diarrhea over the previous two months.Colonoscopy revealed a 4-cm diameter mass in the descending colon,40 cm from the anal verge.Computed tomography revealed intussusception of the descending colon due to the 4-cm mass.The patient underwent a left hemicolectomy.Immunohistochemical analysis of the tumor revealed that it was positive for smooth muscle actin and desmin,and negative for cluster of differentiation 34(CD34),CD117,and discovered on gastrointestinal stromal tumor(GIST)-1,which are characteristic of gastrointestinal LMS.A single liver metastasis developed 11 mo postoperatively;the patient subsequently underwent curative resection thereof.The patient remained disease-free after six cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy(doxorubicin and ifosfamide),and 40 and 52 mo after liver resection and primary surgery,respectively.Similar cases were obtained from a search of Embase,PubMed,MEDLINE,and Google Scholar.CONCLUSION Early diagnosis and surgical resection may be the only potential curative options for liver metastasis of gastrointestinal LMS.

Computational approaches for fast generation of digital 3D video holograms(Invited Paper)

Several approaches for fast generation of digital holograms of a three-dimensional （3D） object have been discussed. Among them, the novel look-up table （N-LUT） method is analyzed to dramatically reduce the number of pre-calculated fringe patterns required for computation of digital holograms of a 3D object by employing a new concept of principal fringe patterns, so that problems of computational complexity and huge memory size of the conventional ray-tracing and look-up table methods have been considerably alleviated. Meanwhile, as the 3D video images have a lot of temporally or spatially redundant data in their inter- and intra-frames, computation time of the 3D video holograms could be also reduced just by removing these redundant data. Thus, a couple of computational methods for generation of 3D video holograms by combined use of the N-LUT method and data compression algorithms are also presented and discussed. Some experimental results finally reveal that by using this approach a great reduction of computation time of 3D video holograms could be achieved.

Heavy-metal-free ternary Cu–In–Se quantum dots(CISe QDs)are promising for solar fuel production because of their low toxicity,tunable band gap,and high light absorption coefficient.Although defects significantly affect the photophysical properties of QDs,the influence on photoelectrochemical hydrogen production is not well understood.Herein,we present the defect engineering of CISe QDs for efficient solar-energy conversion.Lewis acid–base reactions between metal halide–oleylamine complexes and oleylammonium selenocarbamate are modulated to achieve CISe QDs with the controlled amount of Cu vacancies without changing their morphology.Among them,CISe QDs with In/Cu=1.55 show the most outstanding photoelectrochemical hydrogen generation with excellent photocurrent density of up to 10.7 mA cm-2(at 0.6 VRHE),attributed to the suitable electronic band structures and enhanced carrier concentrations/lifetimes of the QDs.The proposed method,which can effectively control the defects in heavy-metal-free ternary QDs,offers a deeper understanding of the effects of the defects and provides a practical approach to enhance photoelectrochemical hydrogen generation.

Weighted Norm Inequalities of the Maximal Commutator of Quasiradial Bochner-Riesz Operators

In this paper, we obtain certain Lpw（Rn）-mapping properties for the maximal operator associated with the commutators of quasiradial Bochner-Riesz means with index δ under certain surface condition on Σed , provided that δ （n-1）/2, b ∈ BMO（Rn）, 1 p ∞ and w ∈ A1 . Moreover, if δ （n-1）/2, then we prove that the above maximal operator admits weak type （H1w（Rn）, L1w（Rn））-mapping properties for b ∈ BMO（Rn） and w ∈ A1 under the surface condition on Σed .

Formation of galvanic cells between constituent phases is largely responsible for corrosion in Mg-based alloys.We develop a methodology to calculate the electrochemical potentials of intermetallic compounds and alloys using a simple model based on the Born-Haber cycle.Calculated electrochemical potentials are used to predict and control the formation of galvanic cells and minimize corrosion.We demonstrate the applicability of our model by minimizing galvanic corrosion in Mg-3wt%Sr-x Zn alloy by tailoring the Zn composition.The methodology proposed in this work is applicable for any general alloy system and will facilitate efficient design of corrosion resistant alloys.

The electronic structure and intervalley coupling of artificial and genuine graphene superlattices

The so-called artificial graphene is an artificial material whose low-energy carriers are described by the massless Dirac equation. Applying a periodic potential with triangular symmetry to a two-dimensional electron gas is one approach to make such a material. According to recent experimental results, it is now possible to realize artificial graphene in the lab and to even apply an additional lateral, one-dimensional periodic potential to it. We name the latter system an artificial graphene superlattice in order to distinguish it from a genuine graphene superlaedce made from graphene. In this study, we investigate the electronic structure of artificial graphene superlattices, which exhibit the emergence of energy band gaps, merging and splitting of the Dirac points, etc. Then, from a similar investigation on genuine graphene superlattices, we show that many of these features originate from the coupling between Dirac fermions residing in two different valleys--the intervaUey coupling. Furthermore, contrary to previous studies, we find that the effects of intervalley coupling on the electronic structure cannot be ignored, irrespective of the length of the spatial period of the superlattice.

Seroprevalence of anti-HAV among patients with chronic viral liver disease

AIM:To investigate the current seroprevalence of hepatitis A virus(HAV) antibodies in patients with chronic viral liver disease in Korea.We also tried to identify the factors affecting the prevalence of HAV antibodies. METHODS:We performed an analysis of the clinical records of 986 patients(mean age:49±9 years,714 males/272 females) with chronic hepatitis B virus(HBV) or hepatitis C virus(HCV) infection who had undergone HAV antibody testing between January 2008 and December 2009.RESULTS:The overall prevalence of IgG anti-HAV was 86.61%(854/986) in patients with chronic liver disease and was 88.13%(869/986) in age-and gendermatched patients from the Center for Health Promotion.The anti-HAV prevalence was 80.04%(405/506) in patients with chronic hepatitis B,86.96%(20/23) in patients with chronic hepatitis C,93.78%(422/450) in patients with HBV related liver cirrhosis,and 100%(7/7) in patients with HCV related liver cirrhosis.The anti-HAV prevalence according to the decade of age was as follows:20s(6.67%) ,30s(50.86%) ,40s(92.29%) ,50s(97.77%) ,and 60s(100%) .The antiHAV prevalence was significantly higher in patients older than 40 years compared with that in patients younger than 40 years of age.Multivariable analysis showed that age≥40 years,female gender and metropolitan cities as the place of residence were independent risk factors for IgG anti-HAV seropositivity. CONCLUSION:Most Korean patients with chronic liver disease and who are above 40 years of age have already been exposed to hepatitis A virus.
