Precise chemical cue presentation alongside advanced brainwide imaging techniques is important to the study of chemosensory processing in animals.Nevertheless,the dynamic nature of chemical-carrying media,such as water or air,poses a significant challenge for delivering highly-controlled chemical flow to an animal subject.Moreover,contact-based cue manipulation and delivery easily shift the position of the animal subject,which is often undesirable for high-quality brain imaging.Additionally,more advanced interfacing tools that align with the diverse range of body part sizes of an animal,ranging from micrometer-scale neurons to meter-long limbs,are much needed.This is particularly crucial when dealing with dimensions that are beyond the reach of conventional experimental tools.

Response Evaluation Using Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound for Unresectable Advanced hepatocellular Carcinoma Treated With Tyrosine kinase Inhibitors Plus Anti-PD-1 Antibody Therapy

Objective: The aim of the work described here was to evaluate the role of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in response evaluation for unresectable advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (hCC) treated with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TkIs) plus anti-programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1) antibody therapy. Methods: A prospective cohort of consecutive patients with hCC who received combined TkI/anti-PD-1 antibody treatment for unresectable hCC between January 2022 and October 2022 was included in this study. The patients underwent unenhanced ultrasound (US) and CEUS examinations before treatment and at follow-up. Changes in the largest diameters of the target tumor on unenhanced US and the largest diameters of the enhancing target tumors on CEUS were evaluated. Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) version 1.1 with unenhanced US and magnetic resonance imaging/computed tomography (MRI/CT) and modified RECIST (mRECIST) with CEUS and CEMRI/CT were used to assess treatment response. Results: A total of 24 hCC patients (23 men and 1 woman; mean age: 56.5 ± 8.5 y; Barcelona Clinic liver Cancer stage C, 62.5%; 29 intrahepatic target tumors) were studied. Calculations of degree of necrosis in the target tumors revealed no significant differences between CEUS and CEMRI/CT (44.5 ± 36.2% vs. 45.3 ± 36.8%, p = 0.862). As for the differentiation of responders from non-responders, the agreement between RECIST version 1.1 of unenhanced US and mRECIST-CEUS was poor (κ coefficient = 0.233). Meanwhile, there was a high degree of concordance between mRECIST-CEUS and mRECIST-CEMRI/CT (κ coefficient = 0.812). Conclusion: CEUS proved to be superior to baseline US and is comparable to CEMRI/CT in defining treatment outcome for combined TkI/anti-PD-1 antibody therapy. © 2023 World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine & Biology

Cool white light and tunable multicolor emission from Tb^(3+)/Dy^(3+)co-activated glasses under different excitations for WlEDs

A set of co-doped(Tb^(3+)/Dy^(3+))lithium zinc borate(lZB)glasses were developed by melt quenching.The structural evaluation was performed for synthesized glassy matrices.The Dy^(3+)and Tb^(3+)individually doped glasses exhibit intense yellow and green luminescence bands at 575 nm(^(4)F_(9/2)→^(6)h_(13/2))and543 nm(^(5)D_(4)→^(7)F_(5)),respectively.The sensitization effect of Dy^(3+)on Tb^(3+)was analyzed by increasing the Tb^(3+)content with respect to the optimum Dy^(3+)content(0.5 mol%)in Dy^(3+)/Tb^(3+).The spectral overlay of Dy^(3+)luminescence and Tb^(3+)absorption profiles,Dy^(3+)/Tb^(3+)Pl spectra under different excitations 352,362,376,and 385 nm,shortening decay lifetimes of Dy^(3+)in Dy^(3+)/Tb^(3+)co-activated glasses,energy transfer(ET)parameters,chromaticity coordinates and their corresponding correlated temperatures all help to explain ET from Dy^(3+)to Tb^(3+).At 385 nm of Dy^(3+)excitation,the optimized co-activated(0.5Dy^(3+)+1.0Tb^(3+)):lZB glass displays cool white light emission.The non-radiative ET from Dy^(3+)to Tb^(3+)is dominated by electric dipole-dipole interaction and its ET efficiency was calculated to be 63%.At the same time,reverse ET from Tb^(3+)to Dy^(3+)was also analyzed.The shift in color coordinates from dominant yellow to greenish-yellow,green and white light emission suggests that Dy^(3+)/Tb^(3+)coactivated lZB glasses can be a potential candidate for UV converted multicolor and white light emitting devices.

Empirical model for fusion cross sections of Ca-induced reactions

A new empirical formula for the astrophysical S-factor has been suggested as a function of the Coulomb interaction parameter,center of mass energy,and barrier height.About 22 fusion reactions with ^(40,48)Ca as projectiles were considered for different targets,leading to compound nuclei with atomic and mass numbers varying between 40≤Z≤≤Z≤112 and 88≤A≤27888≤A≤278,respectively.The fusion cross-sections have been estimated using the geometric factor,the Gamow-Sommerfield factor,and the empirical formula for the S-factor.This study's findings showed better agreement with those of available experiments when compared to Wong's formula.The present work leads to a smaller standard deviation value than Wong's formula when used to correlate the experimental data of calcium-induced fusion reactions.Wong's formula provides a good approximation of fusion cross-sections when the center of mass energy is below the fusion barrier when compared to above the fusion barrier.

Emerging evidence and perspectives have pointed towards the heart playing an important role in hepatorenal syndrome(hRS),outside of conventional understanding that liver cirrhosis is traditionally considered the sole origin of a cascade of pathophysiological mechanisms directly affecting the kidneys in this context.In the absence of established heart disease,cirrhotic cardiomyopathy may occur more frequently in those with liver cirrhosis and kidney disease.It is a specific form of cardiac dysfunction characterized by blunted contractile responsiveness to stress stimuli and altered diastolic relaxation with electrophysiological abnormalities.Despite the clinical description of these potential cardiac-related complications of the liver,the role of the heart has traditionally been an overlooked aspect of circulatory dysfunction in hRS.Yet from a physiological sense,temporality(prior onset)of cardiorenal interactions in hRS and positive effects stemming from portosystemic shunting demonstrated an important role of the heart in the development and progression of kidney dysfunction in cirrhotic patients.In this review,we discuss current concepts surrounding how the heart may influence the development and progression of hRS,and the role of systemic inflammation and endothelial dysfunction causing circulatory dysfunction within this setting.The temporality of heart and kidney dysfunction in hRS will be discussed.For a subgroup of patients who receive portosystemic shunting,the dynamics of cardiorenal interactions following treatment is reviewed.Continued research to determine the unknowns in this topic is anticipated,hopefully to further clarify the intricacies surrounding the liver-heart-kidney connection and improve strategies for management.

Implications for brainstem recovery from studies in primates after sensory loss from arm

For decades,researchers have known that when neurons lose their activating inputs,they can atrophy and even die.For example,removing sensory nerve inputs from the arm to the spinal cord after amputation or cutting the spinal nerves can shrink the post-synaptic target zones(e.g.,Woods et al.,2000).From touch receptors for the hand and arm,primary nerve afferents enter the spinal cord,and axons travel in the dorsal columns to target the cuneate nucleus(Cu)of the brainstem on the same side of the body(Figure 1).When sensory loss is unilateral,the overwhelming result is for the associated primary target zone to shrink in total size(cross-sectional area),as compared to the size of the opposite side.

Effect of radiative loss mechanisms on FIR thermometric parameters of Nd3+-doped lithium tellurite glasses

Nd3+-doped tellurite glasses are promising materials for thermometers based on the fluorescence intensity ratio（FIR） technique.Nevertheless,at high Nd3+concentrations,energy transfer（ET） processes such as optical reabsorption and cross-relaxation can affect the Nd3+emission,which has been little explored in the literature.Therefore,the present work investigated the use of Nd3+-doped tellurite glass(samples doped with Nd3+at 0.2 mol%,0.5 mol%,2.0 mol%,and 4.0 mol%) in fluorescence thermometers,in the temperature range from 299 to 371 k.The results indicate a strong dependence of the FIR parameters on the Nd3+concentration,due to changes in the emission band profiles caused by optical reabsorption of the Nd3+emissions and cross-relaxation processes.A decrease of the relative sensitivity of the ratio4F5/2→4I9/2/4F3/2→4I9/2is observed for samples doped with higher amounts of Nd3+.The maximum relative sensitivity at 299 k is 3.00%/k,which is the highest value among the reported Nd3+ions.

Mast cells are a subtype of white blood cells and are involved in the immune system.These cells contain many chemical substances called mediators,which are involved in the allergic response.The fact that mast cells play a role in many events that require urgent intervention,especially anaphylaxis,has led to a more detailed study of these cells.The diseases also caused by dysfunctions of mast cells have been examined in many circumstances.For instance,mast cell activation syndrome is known as an augmented number of cells due to decreased cell death,resulting in clinical symptoms affecting many systems.The main common symptoms include flushing,hypotension,urticaria,angioedema,headache,vomiting and diarrhea.Although the underlying mechanism is not yet clearly known,we aim to review the literature in a broad perspective and bring together the existing knowledge in the light of the literature due to the diversity of its involvement in the body and the fact that it is a little known syndrome.

Spalling characteristics of high-temperature treated granitic rock at different strain rates

The dynamic spalling characteristics of rock are important for stability analysis in rock engineering.This paper presented an experimental investigation on the dynamic spalling characteristics of granite with different temperatures and strain rates.A series of dynamic spalling tests with different impact velocities were conducted on thermally treated granite at different temperatures.The dynamic spalling strengths of granite with different temperatures and strain rates were determined.A model was proposed to correlate the dynamic spalling strength of granite,high temperature and strain rate.The results show that the spalling strength of granite decreases with increasing temperature.Moreover,the spalling strength of granite with a higher strain rate is larger than that with a lower strain rate.The proposed model can describe the relationship among dynamic spalling strength of granite,high temperature and strain rate.

In situ TEM investigation of electron irradiation and aging-induced high-density nanoprecipitates in an Mg-10Gd-3Y-1Zn-0.5Zr alloy

In-situ electron irradiation and aging are applied to introduce high-density precipitates in an Mg-10Gd-3Y-1Zn-0.5Zr(GWZ1031k, wt.%)alloy to improve the hardness. The results show that the hardness of the Mg alloy after irradiation for 10 h and aging for 9 h at 250 ℃ is 1.64 GPa, which is approximately 64% higher than that of the samples before being treated. It is mainly attributed to γ' precipitates on the basal plane after irradiation and the high-density nanoscale β' precipitates on the prismatic plane after aging, which should be closely related to the irradiation-induced homogenous clusters. The latter plays a key role in precipitation hardening. This result paves a way to improve the mechanical properties of metallic materials by tailoring the precipitation through irradiation and aging.
