A novel mutation of SGK-1 gene in central serous chorioretinopathy

AIM: To investigate the association of serum glucocorticoid kinase gene-1(SGK-1) DNA variants with chronic central serous chorioretinopathy(CSC).METHODS: We enrolled 32 eyes of 32 patients who were diagnosed with chronic CSC and composed 32 normal eyes as a control group. Peripheral blood was used for DNA extraction and polymerase chain reaction amplification. SGK1 gene was sequenced by using Big Dye Terminator v3.1 cycle sequencing Kit(Applied Biosystems, Foster City, CA, USA). The SGK-1 gene and its variants were investigated in CSC patient group and control ***: We identified a new polymorphism M32 V in two person in the patient group [Minor allele frequency(MAF) =0.009] on the region of 1-60 amino acids. The rs1057293 was located in the encoder region of the SGK- 1 gene but not associated with CSC(P =0.68). An intrinsic rs1743966 is also not associated(P =0.28).CONCLUSION: The new polymorphism M32 V is located on the region of 1-60 amino acids which is necessary for localization to the mitochondria in CSC patient. This mutation is probably important for the energy metabolism and plays an important role in the cellular response to hyperosmotic stress and other stress stimuli. Both rs1057293 and rs1743966 are not associated with CSC.

Inflationary effects of oil prices and domestic gasoline prices:Markov-switching-VAR analysis

The purpose of this study is to contribute to the literature by studying the effects of sudden changes both on crude oil import price and domestic gasoline price on inflation for Turkey, an emerging country. Since an inflation targeting regime is being carried out by the Central Bank of Turkey, determination of such effects is becoming more important. Therefore empirical evidence in this paper will serve as guidance for those countries, which have an in- flation targeting regime. Analyses have been done in the period of October 2005-December 2012 by Markovswitching vector autoregressive （MS-VAR） models which are successful in capturing the nonlinear properties of variables. Using MS-VAR analysis, it is found that there are 2 regimes in the analysis period. Furthermore, regime changes can be dated and the turning points of economic cycles can be determined. In addition, it is found that the effect of the changes in crude oil and domestic gasoline prices on consumer prices and core inflation is not the same under different regimes. Moreover, the sudden increase in gasoline price is more important for consumer price infla- tion than crude oil price shocks. Another finding is the presence of a pass-through effect from oil price and ga- soline price to core inflation.

Natural stones used as floor and wall coverings are exposed to many different abrasive forces,so it is essential to choose suitable materials for wear resistance in terms of the life of the *** abrasion resistance of natural stones can be determined in the laboratory by applying the B?hme abrasion resistance(BAR)***,the direct analysis of BAR in the laboratory has disadvantages such as wasting time and energy,experimental errors,and health *** eliminate these disadvantages,the estimation of BAR using artificial neural networks(ANN)was *** natural stone samples were collected from Türkiye,and uniaxial compressive strength(UCS),flexural strength(FS),water absorption rate(WA),unit volume weight(UW),effective porosity(n),and BAR tests were carried *** outputs of these tests were gathered and a data set,consisting of a total of 105 data,was randomly divided into two groups:testing and *** the current study,the success of three different training algorithms of Levenberg-Marquardt(LM),Bayesian regularization(BR),and scaled conjugate gradient(SCG)were compared for BAR prediction of natural *** criteria such as coefficient of determination(R~2),mean square error(MSE),mean square error(RMSE),and mean absolute percentage error(MAPE),which are widely used and adopted in the literature,were used to determine predictive *** findings of the study indicated that ANN is a valid method for estimating the BAR ***,the LM algorithm(R~2=0.9999,MSE=0.0001,RMSE=0.0110,and MAPE=0.0487)in training and the BR algorithm(R~2=0.9896,MSE=0.0589,RMSE=0.2427,and MAPE=1.2327)in testing showed the best prediction *** has been observed that the proposed method is quite practical to *** the artificial neural networks method will provide an advantage in similar laborintensive experimental studies.

The mobility of clusters on a semiconductor surface for various values of cluster size is studied as a function of temperature by kinetic Monte Carlo method. The cluster resides on the surface of a square grid. Kinetic processes such as the diffusion of single particles on the surface, their attachment and detachment to/from clusters, diffusion of particles along cluster edges are considered. The clusters considered in this study consist of 150-6000 atoms per cluster on average. A statistical probability of motion to each direction is assigned to each particle where a particle with four nearest neighbors is assumed to be immobile. The mobility of a cluster is found from the root mean square displacement of the center of mass of the cluster as a function of time. It is found that the diffusion coefficient of clusters goes as D = A（T）Na where N is the average number of particles in the cluster, A（T） is a temperature-dependent constant and a is a parameter with a value of about -0.64 〈 a 〈 -0.75. The value of a is found to be independent of cluster sizes and temperature values （170-220 K） considered in this study. As the diffusion along the perimeter of the cluster becomes prohibitive, the exponent approaches a value of -0.5. The diffusion coefficient is found to change by one order of magnitude as a function of cluster size.

Herein, we report that a series of novel palladium（II）-NHC complexes （NHC=N-heterocyclic carbene） were synthesized. The structures of all novel complexes were characterized by ^1H NMR, ^13C NMR, FT-IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis techniques. These palladium（ll）-NHC complexes were tested as efficient catalysts in the direct C-H bond activation of benzoxazole and benzothiazole with aryl bromides in the presence of 1 mol% catalyst loading at 150 ℃ for 4 h. Under the given conditions, various aryl bromides were successfully applied as the arylating reagents to achieve the 2-arylbenzoxazoles and 2-arylbenzothiazoles in acceptable to high yields.

Business cycle dynamics are determined by relatively large volatilities in output,consumption,and investment,which leads to cyclical fluctuations in interest *** the Markov switching model,we model the nominal interest rate movements to explain the volatility regime shifts in a set of selected emerging Asian *** estimated results provide significant evidence of regime-dependent means,variances,and probabilities in both stable and volatile regimes in selected countries,confirming the existence of two distinct regimes in nominal interest rate *** addition,the smoothed probability results of switching autoregressive model show that the model is capable of capturing the two regimes for the corresponding nominal interest rate ***,the results reveal that the stables regimes have higher durations than the volatile *** study also shows the advantage of Markov switching models over conventional regression models,allowing the identification of different regimes for the cyclical behavior of interest rates.

Poly(methylmethacrylate)(PMMA)is a widely used material in dental applications,particularly as denture *** to thermally unstable and wet oral cavity,the implanted PMMA based resins occasionally deform and grow bacterial biofilms at the interface between oral cavity and the *** strategies attempted earlier to improve the bacterial resistance and mechanical performance of ***(ethyleneimine)(PEI)is a hyperbranched cationic polymer shown earlier to improve antibacterial activity of resins but do not improve mechanical properties of the resins alone,while silk fibroin(SF)is a natural biopolymer with unique material *** this study,we combined SF and PEI towards development of antibacterial and mechanically superior PMMA based materials towards overcoming its *** polyblend electrospinning to combine SF,PEI and PMMA,we successfully developed intrinsically antibacterial and mechanically reinforced nanofiber *** propose that the resulting nanofiber mats have the potential to be incorporated into PMMA based denture resin materials to overcome the problems of patients and improve their quality of life.

Effects of fractional-order PI controller on delay margin in single-area delayed load frequency control systems

This study aims to determine the improvement effect on the delay margin if fractional-order proportional integral(PI) controller is used in the control of a singlearea delayed load frequency control(LFC) system. The delay margin of the system with fractional-order PI control has been obtained for various fractional integral orders and the effect of them has been shown on the delay margin as a third controller parameter. Furthermore,the stability of the system that is either under or over the delay margin is examined by generalized modified Mikhailov *** stability results obtained have been confirmed numerically in time domain. It is demonstrated that the proposed controller for delayed LFC system provides more flexibility on delay margin according to integer-order PI controller.

This study investigated how small and medium enterprises(SMEs) in a country perceive major global risks. The aim was to explore how country attributes and circumstances affect SME assessments of the likelihood,impacts, and rankings of global risks, and to find out if SME risk assessment and rankings differ from the global rankings. Data were gathered using an online survey of manufacturing SMEs in Turkey. The results show that global economic risks and geopolitical risks are of major concern for SMEs, and environmental risks are at the bottom of their ranking. Among the economic risks, fiscal crises in key economies and high structural unemployment or underemployment were found to be the highest risks for the SMEs. Failure of regional or global governance, failure of national governance, and interstate conflict with regional consequences were found to be among the top geopolitical risks for the SMEs. The SMEs considered the risk of largescale cyber-attacks and massive incident of data fraud/theft to be relatively higher than other global technological *** social instability and failure of urban planning were among the top societal risks for the SMEs. Although the global environmental and disaster risks were ranked lowest on the list, man-made environmental damage and disasters and major natural hazard-induced disasters were ranked the highest among this group of risks. Overall, the results show that SMEs at a country level, for example Turkey, perceive global risks differently than the major global players.
