Phenolic compounds affect production of pyocyanin, swarming motility and biofilm formation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Objective: To investigate the effects of plant-derived phenolic compounds(i.e. caffeic acid, cinnamic acid, ferulic acid and vanillic acid) on the production of quorum sensing regulated virulence factors such as pyocyanin, biofilm formation and swarming motility of Pseudomonas aeruginosa(P. aeruginosa) isolates.Methods: Fourteen clinical P. aeruginosa isolates obtained from urine samples and P. aeruginosa PA01 strain were included in the study. The antibacterial effects of phenolic compounds were screened by well diffusion assay. Pyocyanin and biofilm activity were measured from culture supernatants and the absorbance values were measured using a spectrophotometer. Swarming plates supplemented with phenolic acids were point inoculated with P. aeruginosa strains and the ability to swarm was determined by measuring the distance of swarming from the central inoculation site.Results: Tested phenolic compounds reduced the production of pyocyanin and biofilm formation without affecting growth compared to untreated cultures. Moreover, these compounds blocked about 50% of biofilm production and swarming motility in P. aeruginosa isolates.Conclusions: We may suggest that if swarming and consecutive biofilm formation could be inhibited by the natural products as shown in our study, the bacteria could not attach to the surfaces and produce chronic infections. Antimicrobials and natural products could be combined and the dosage of antimicrobials could be reduced to overcome antimicrobial resistance and drug side effects.

The geomechanical properties of soils treated with nanosilica particles

This study examines the effect of nanosilica(NS)additive to improve the mechanical properties of clay,clayey sand,and sand.The engineering properties of the soils were investigated through Atterberg limits,compaction,unconfined compression,ultrasonic pulse velocity(UPV),freeze-thaw,and direct shear tests.The NS content varied from 0%to 0.7%and cement content was 5%and 10%by the dry weight of the soil.The curing period varied from 7 d to 150 d.The consistency,compaction,and strength properties of the soils were affected by the presence of NS and cement.The optimum NS contents in clay specimens with 5%and 10%cement were 0.5%and 0.7%,respectively.It was 0.7%in sand specimens with both cement ratios,as well as 0.3%and 0.7%in clayey sand specimens with 5%and 10%cement,respectively.In terms of freeze-thaw resistance,clayey sand specimens containing 0.5%NS and 10%cement had the minimum strength loss.Exponential relationships existed between the ultrasonic pulse velocity(UPV)and the unconfined compressive strength(UCS)of soil specimens having the same curing period.The shear strength parameters of the soils also improved with the addition of NS.Scanning electron microscope(SEM)images demonstrated that cement and NS contributed to the improvement of the soils by producing a denser and more uniform structure.It was concluded that the minor addition of NS could potentially improve the geomechanical properties of the soils.

Molecular Application of a State Specific Multi-Reference Brillouin-Wigner Perturbation Theory

The single reference second order Brillouin-Wigner perturbation theory recently developed, which eliminates its size-extensivity error, has been generalized to state-specific, multi-reference （SS-MR）, BWPT2 providing a size-extensive correction to the electron correlation problem for systems that demand the use of a multi-reference function. Illustrative numerical tests of the size-extensivity corrections are made for widely used molecules in their ground states, which are pronounced multi-reference characteristics. We have implemented two-reference and three-reference cases for CH2, BH and bond breaking process in the ground states of HF molecules. The results are compared with the rigorously size-extensive methods such as the M^ller-Plesset perturbation theory, i.e., MP2, full configuration interaction （Full-CI） and allied methods using the same basis sets.

External beam radiotherapy for localized prostate cancer

Radiotherapy （XRT） is a curative treatment option for prostate cancer （PCa）. Recent XRT technologies allow higher dose therapy that lead to increased local control with less adjacent tissue damage. Additionally, receiving neo-adjuvant or adjuvant hormonotherapy （HT） during radiation therapy increases the curative effect. ＂lhe aim of this paper is to review the current literature and guidelines on external beam radiation therapy for PCa. However, brachytherapy and radiosurgery, a recently evolving relatively new technology for the radiotherapeutic management of localized PCa, are beyond the scope of this paper.

Ground State Energy Calculations of Isoelectronic Series of He in Double-Zeta Approximation Using Coulomb Potential with Noninteger Indices

Using formulae for one- and two-electron integrals of Coulomb interaction potential fk （r） = r^-k with non-integer indices k established by one of the authors with the help of complete orthonormal sets of ψ^α-exponential-type orbitals （α = 1, 0,-1,-2,…）, we perform the calculations for isoelectronic series of the He atom containing nuclear charges from 2 to 10, where k = 1 - μ （-1 〈 μ 〈 0）. For this purpose we have used the double-zeta approximation, the configuration interaction and coupled-cluster methods employing the integer-n Slater-type orbitals as basis sets. It is demonstrated that the results of calculations obtained are better than the numerical Hartree-Fock values.

ZnO could be a suitable catalyst for the oxidative conversion of CH4,C2H6 and C3H8.However,the main drawback is its thermal instability.Therefore,ZnO supported on ZrO 2,TiO2,γ-Al2O and SiO2 was investigated for the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane and ethane,and the oxidative coupling of methane.The stability of the supported ZnO is partially improved,but ZnO reacts with the support material,forming new compounds （Zn-zirconates,-titanates,-aluminates and-silicates）,which already occurs below reaction temperature.This might also be the case for many other heterogeneous catalysts.

Leadership in health care focuses mainly on achieving the goal of effective health care delivery as a team under the guidance of another team member.Leadership in the health sector has become a key point in improving patient safety and health management as a whole.Delivering effective health care services to patients may be more efficient when health care professionals unite and act as a single body that is patient oriented.By developing a structure where leadership influences health management,the outcome of services rendered to patients is being greatly ameliorated.The Institute of Medicine(IOM)has outlined a number of actions which health care organizations need to implement in order to improve patient safety.The Baldrige National Quality Program also recognizes the importance of leaders and has stated the roles of leaders and what is expected of them in order to achieve excellence in health care.Leadership models are the fundamentals of leadership,which determine whether the objectives will be met as in the interest of the organization.This research was aimed to determine the impact of leadership on health management.This explores the characteristics of a leader,leadership styles that may be implemented,and their effect on outcome in a health care organization.
