Hepatitis E Virus Infection in HIV positive ART naive and Experienced Individuals in nigeria

Background: Studies have shown Hepatitis E Virus to be a causative agent of acute and chronic hepatitis in severely immunocompromised patients such as organ transplant recipients and person with HIV infection. This study was designed to determine the burden of HEV infection among HIV positive individuals in nigeria and the effect of HIV treatment on the burden of HEV infection among this group of patients. Methods: Aliquot of plasma samples collected for laboratory investigations such as CD4 enumeration, blood chemistry (AST, ALT, Creatine, Urea) were used to determine the presence of HEV IgG and IgM antibodies using commercially available ELISA. Samples analysed in the study were collected from 180 HIV positive individuals (90 ART naive and 90 ART experienced) attending the ART clinic at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, nigeria. Results: Twenty two of the 180 (12.2%) samples were positive for either HEV IgG (20/180) or IgM (2/180). The rate of HEV IgG was higher among ART naive individuals and the two IgM positive persons were ART naive. There was no significant difference in the mean CD4 count and mean ALT between HEV seronegative and seropositive individuals (p = 0.8 and 0.2 respectively). Conclusions: The results of this study suggest the need to test for HEV infection in HIV positive individuals for the early diagnosis and proper management since HEV is known to be fulminant in the presence of underlying liver disease that is common among HIV infected persons. In addition, the use of ART may reduce the incidence of HEV infection in HIV positive persons.

Background: There is paucity of data on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors among stroke patients in our population. This study aimed at assessing CVD risk factors amongst stroke patients compared with apparently healthy controls. Methods: This was a case-control study conducted at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital Kano. One hundred stroke subjects were consecutively recruited and compared with 100 age and sex matched controls. The CVD risk factors assessed were hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, obesity, cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, socioeconomic status (SES), increased age, male gender and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) status. Results: Mean age was 56.4 ± 15.8 years for cases and 54.5 ± 15.4 years for controls (p = 0.39), and 53% of the former and 52% of the latter were males (p = 0.887). The most prevalent CVD risk factor was hypertension, found in 71% of cases and 42% of the controls, (p = 0.01). All heart diseases were found in 70% of cases and 21% of controls (p nd hypertensive heart disease (HHD) was the commonest, found in 55% of cases and 18% of controls (p pidemia was found in 53% of cases and 37% of the controls (p = 0.023), diabetes mellitus/hyperglycemia in 23% of the cases and 6% of the controls (p = 0.01), history of transient ischemic attack (TIA) in 19% of cases and 1% of the controls (p = 0.01), while atrial fibrillation was found in 9% of cases only. Other risk factors were uncommon. Conclusion: The most frequent CVD risk factors among nigerians with stroke were systemic hypertension, heart diseases, male sex and dyslipidemia, while HIV and other risk factors were uncommon. Thus medical attention and public enlightenment should focus on the common ones as detected in this study.

porosity (n) and Dispersivity (D) were modeled in relation to Solute Transport Time (t) in a saturated, homogeneous, isotropic, unconfined aquifer using the MOC model. It was noted that n and D have an important influence on solute transport time t in groundwater, with a consistently strong and direct relationship between n, D, and t. In the case of poro^sity, the relationship was found to be directly related to t when other aquifer properties remained unchanged. This was also mathematically argued using a form of the flow equation put forward by Henry Darcy (1856). Dispersivity on the other hand had somehow the same relationship with solute transport time t as porosity, but with much less effect. That is, higher dispersions lead to longer solute transport time within the aquifer system. This was because as the individual solute particles set off from the average seepage velocity, they traversed through longer distances due to tortuosity, mechanical mixing, diffusion, and microscopic heterogeneity latent in the porous media. Also when n and D were co-treated over t, n was noted to be dominant over D with regard t. This follows that the effect of porosity on solute transport time far out shadowed that of dispersivity. Stated in other words, the dispersivity of a substance in any porous medium is to a large extent a function of the porosity of that medium.

Comparative Theoretical Studies of the Reactivity and Stability of Selected Groups of Isomers with Carbon-Oxygen and Carbon-nitrogen Bonds

Electronic structure calculations have been carried out to study various closely related isomers with propane backbone which form part of our quantum chemical approach to inter and intra-molecular kinetics. The usefulness of UCA-FUKUI developed by Jesús Sánchez-Márquez to facilitate the theoretical study of chemical reactivity is exploited. All isomers are identified as local minima with single-point calculations on DFT/B3LYp/6-31G(d,p). The increasing order of stability by groups of isomers are group I;propn-2-ol, propan-1-ol, group II;propanone, propanal, group III;Ethylmethanoate, propanoic acid, Methylethanoate, group IV;n,n-dimethylformamide, propanimino, and propanamide. The trend in reactivity of the various groups of isomers and specific points of nucleophilic and electrophilic attacks are presented. We noticed that most of the properties of these isomers taught at the fundamental levels are proven true theoretically.

Changes in Soil C and n Contents and Mineralization Across a Cultivation Chronosequence of paddy Fields in Subtropical China

Dynamics of soil organic matter in a cultivation chronosequence of paddy fields were studied in subtropical *** of soil organic matter was determined by measuring CO2 evolution from soil during 20 days of laboratoryincubation. In the first 30 years of cultivation, soil organic C and n contents increased rapidly. After 30 years, 0-10 cmsoil contained 19.6 g kg-1 organic C and 1.62 g kg-1 total n, with the corresponding values of 18.1 g kg-1 and 1.50g kg-1 for 10-20 cm, and then remained stable even after 80 years of rice cultivation. During 20 days incubation themineralization rates of organic C and n in surface soil (0-10 cm) ranged from 2.2% to 3.3% and from 2.8% to 6.7%,respectively, of organic C and total n contents. Biologically active C size generally increased with increasing soil organicC and n contents. Soil dissolved organic C decreased after cultivation of wasteland to 10 years paddy field and thenincreased. Soil microbial biomass C increased with number of years under cultivation, while soil microbial biomass nincreased during the first 30 years of cultivation and then stabilized. After 30 years of cultivation surface soil (0-10 cm)contained 332.8 mg kg-1 of microbial biomass C and 23.85 mg kg-1 of microbial biomass n, which were 111% and 47%higher than those in soil cultivated for 3 years. It was suggested that surface soil with 30 years of rice cultivation insubtropical China would have attained a steady state of organic C content, being about 19 g kg-1.

Oral mucositis due to chemotherapy and irradiation continues to be an important clinical problem. The effectiveness of hyaluronic acid-based compounds in accelerated healing and helping manage pain in patients with oral mucositis was demonstrated. It was investigated a protective and regenerative effect of hyaluronic acid based gel formulation enriched with nAG （n-acetyl glucosamine） loaded solid lipid nanoparticles against degenerative process of the oral mucosa. Gel formulations were obtained by adding sHA （sodium hyaluronate） into SLn aqueous suspension. Gel performances were evaluated by multi-methodological approach： mucoadhesive and barrier properties evaluation, cell viability. It was shown that gel formulation based sHA, enriched with nAG loaded SLns, when added as suspension, demonstrated to have a good mucoadhesion profile comparable in terms of tensile work and fracture strength to Carbomer 934 2%. The presence of nAG encapsulated and not in gel formulation enhances also the biocompatibility of the system, demonstrating also to have a proliferative effect. Finally, any barrier property was altered. Finally, results demonstrated that sHA based gel formulation enriched SLns, demonstrated good mucoadeshion property, comparable to carbopol gel, positive control. The proposed gel formulation enriched with SLns setting up in this work could be used as innovation strategy to treat oral mucositis.
