Effect of small molecular surfactants on physical,turbidimetric,and rheological properties of Pickering nanoemulsions stabilized with whey protein isolate

In the present study,Pickering nanoemulsions(oil-in-water)co-stabilized with whey protein isolate(WPI)and three types of small molecular surfactants were ***(CTAB),sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS),and Tween 20 were used as cationic,anionic,and nonionic surfactants,*** investigate effects of small molecular surfactants on physical stability,turbidimetric,and rheological properties of protein-stabilized Pickering nanoemulsions,various treatments mimicking food processing including pH,heat,freeze-thaw,and salt were *** revealed that the droplet size and polydispersity index of the nanoemulsion prepared with WPI alone were increased after heat treatment or at pH condition near the isoelectric point of WPI,indicating a low physical ***,nanoemulsions prepared with WPI-SDS or WPI-CTAB maintained their initial state even after heat treatment including ***,there was no significant change in the droplet size of the nanoemulsion prepared with WPI-Tween after freeze-thaw and salt *** Pickering nanoemulsion stabilized with both WPI and SDS had the highest viscosity,Turbiscan stability index(TSI)was the ***,the TSI of the nanoemulsions added with CTAB or Tween 20 was lower than that of the nanoemulsions prepared with WPI alone,confirming that the storage stability of protein-stabilized Pickering nanoemulsion was improved by adding small molecular surfactants.

Edible insects have been attracting significant attention not only for their nutritional superiority but also for their excellent bio-functional *** this study,the apoptotic protective effects of water-soluble protein(WPB)and salt-soluble protein(SPB)extracts derived from Protaetia brevitarsis against hydrogen peroxide(H_(2)O_(2))-induced oxidative stress in C2C12 cells were *** and SPB were confirmed to exhibit radical scavenging and ferric-ion reducing *** addition,WPB and SPB treatments effectively restored the decreased cell viability of the C2C12 cells induced by H2O2 treatment,and showcased protective effects against apoptosis and mitochondrial dysfunction by regulating the expressions of pro-and anti-apoptotic ***,our data indicated that protein extracts from Protaetia brevitarsis could be beneficial for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with apoptosis induced by oxidative stress.

High-mobility group box 1 was first discovered in the calf thymus as a DNA-binding nuclear protein and has been widely studied in diverse fields,including neurology and ***-mobility group box 1 in the extracellular space functions as a pro-inflammatory damage-associated molecular pattern,which has been proven to play an important role in a wide variety of central nervous system disorders such as ischemic stroke,Alzheimer’s disease,frontotemporal dementia,Parkinson’s disease,multiple sclerosis,epilepsy,and traumatic brain *** drugs that inhibit high-mobility group box 1 as a damage-associated molecular pattern,such as glycyrrhizin,ethyl pyruvate,and neutralizing anti-high-mobility group box 1 antibodies,are commonly used to target high-mobility group box 1 activity in central nervous system *** it is commonly known for its detrimental inflammatory effect,high-mobility group box 1 has also been shown to have beneficial pro-regenerative roles in central nervous system *** this narrative review,we provide a brief summary of the history of high-mobility group box 1 research and its characterization as a damage-associated molecular pattern,its downstream receptors,and intracellular signaling pathways,how high-mobility group box 1 exerts the repair-favoring roles in general and in the central nervous system,and clues on how to differentiate the pro-regenerative from the pro-inflammatory *** targeting high-mobility group box 1 in the central nervous system may benefit from differentiating between the two functions rather than overall suppression of high-mobility group box 1.

Hepatitis B virus(HBV)infection is a global health problem and more than 350 million people worldwide are chronic carriers of the *** the recent dramatic decline in HBV chronic patients through successful programs of hepatitis B surface antigen vaccination,South Korea is still recognized as an endemic area of HBV *** infections in South Korea exhibit several distinct features in epidemiologic and clinical *** this review paper,we summarize the distinct HBV mutation patterns related to clinical severity and the molecular epidemiologic traits in Korean chronic patients based on previous ***,several lines of evidence,including our previous results,have led to the conclusion that a combination of the exclusive predominance of genotype C2,which is prone to mutations,the high prevalence of basal core promoter double mutations,and the presence of distinct immune responses against HBV proteins in the Korean population may generate the distinct HBV variants rarely or not encountered in other areas,which results in distinct clinical manifestations in Korean chronic *** may provide a novel insight into the relationships between clinical severity,HBV genotype distribution,and HBV naturally occurring variants.

FEATURE NETWORK-DRIVEN QUADRANT MAPPING FOR SUMMARIZING CUSTOMER REVIEWS

With the rapid growth of e-commerce, customers increasingly write online reviews of the product they purchase. These customer reviews are one of the most valuable sources of information affecting selection of products or services. Summarizing these customer reviews is becoming an interesting area of research, inspiring researchers to develop a more condensed, concise summarization for users. However, most of the current efforts at summarization are based on general product features without feature＇s relationship. As a result, these summaries either ignore feedback from customers or do a poor job of reflecting the opinions expressed in customer reviews. To remedy this summarization shortcoming, we propose a feature network-driven quadrant mapping that captures and incorporates opinions from customer reviews. Our focus is on construction of a feature network, which is based on co-occurrence and sematic similarities, and a quadrant display showing the opinions polarity of feature groups. Moreover, the proposed approach involves clustering similar product features, and thus, it is different from standard text summarization based on abstraction and extraction. The summarized results can help customers better understand the overall opinions about a product.

Comparison of the impact of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography between pre-COVID-19 and current COVID-19 outbreaks in South Korea:Retrospective survey

Sandwich-type ordered mesoporous carbon/graphene nanocomposites derived from ionic liquid

Sandwich-type ordered mesoporous carbon/graphene nanocomposites were successfully synthesized using 2D ordered mesoporous silica/graphene nanocomposites as the hard template and an ionic liquid as a N-rich carbon source. We used an ionic liquid of 1-(3-cyanopropyl)-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide containing nitrile groups (–CN) in the cation and anion as a carbon precursor for the preparation of the nanocomposites. Nitriles do not decompose under thermal treatment in an inert gas atmosphere, but leave significant amounts of N-rich carbon materials. The nanocomposites had a large surface area (1,316 m2·g–1), an average pore diameter of 5.9 nm, and high electrical conductivity. The nanocomposite electrode showed a high specific capacitance of 190 F·g–1at 0.5 A·g–1in 1 M TEABF4/AN electrolyte and a good rate capability between 0 and 2.7 V for supercapacitor (or ultracapacitor) applications. Electrocrystallization of Monodisperse Nanocrystal Copper on Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite Electrode

Mechanism of copper electrocrystallization on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite electrode from a solution of 1 mmol/L CuSO 4 and 1.0 mol/L H 2 SO 4 has been studied using cyclic voltammogram and chronoamperometry. The results show that in copper electrodeposition the charge‐transfer step is fast and the rate of growth is controlled by the rate of mass transfer of copper ions to the growing centers. Reduction of Cu(II) ions did not undergo underpotential deposition. The initial deposition kinetics of Cu electrocrystallization corresponds to a model including progressive nucleation and diffusion controlled growth. Copper nanocrystals with size of 75.6 nm and relative standard deviation of 9% can be obtained by modulation potential electrodeposition.

Changes in endoscopic patterns before and during COVID-19 outbreak:Experience at a single tertiary center in Korean

BACKGROUND The surge of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)patients has markedly influenced the treatment policies of tertiary hospitals because of the need to protect medical staff and contain viral transmission,but the impact COVID-19 had on emergency gastrointestinal endoscopies has not been *** To compare endoscopic activities and analyze the clinical outcomes of emergency endoscopies performed before and during the COVID-19 outbreak in Daegu,the worst-hit region in South *** This retrospective cohort study was conducted on patients aged≥18 years that underwent endoscopy from February 18 to March 28,2020,at a tertiary hospital in ***,laboratory findings,types and causes of emergency endoscopies,and endoscopic reports were reviewed and compared with those obtained for the same period in 2018 and *** From February 18 to March 28,a total of 366 emergent endoscopic procedures were performed:Upper endoscopy(170,50.6%),endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(113,33.6%),and colonoscopy with sigmoidoscopy(53,15.8%).The numbers of procedures performed in 2018 and 2019 dropped by 48.8%and 54.8%,respectively,compared with those in *** the COVID-19 outbreak,the main indications for endoscopy were melena(36.7%),hematemesis(30.6%),and hematochezia(10.2%).Of the endoscopic abnormalities detected,gastrointestinal bleeding was the most common:39 cases in 2018,51 in 2019,and 35 in *** The impact of COVID-19 is substantial and caused dramatic reductions in endoscopic procedures and changes in patient ***-term follow-up studies are required to determine the effects of COVID-19 induced changes in the endoscopy field.
