Effects of Anthropometry Variations on Physiological Parameters of Heart Rate, Oxygen Consumption, Aerobic Power While Performing Manual Operation at Fixed Vice Height

This study investigated the effect of fixed height standing-workstation on different people with diverse anthropometry dimensions. Measurements of some anthropometric and physiological parameters are carried out as bases for the calculation of body mass index (BMI) and the determination of the maximum heart rate (HRmax) and aerobic power (VO2max) of individual subject while performing manual cutting operation with hacksaw on fixed vice height of 940 mm. Twenty subjects (S1 to S20) parted 2 mm thick square-pipe of 25 mm × 25 mm. Each subject carried out cutting operation in 5 replicates and their physiological parameters during activities are measured to determine their expended energy (EE) and oxygen consumption rate (VO2). The results showed that subject S4 with BMI of 20.76 kg/m2 has maximum cutting rate of 5.33 stroke/s, while subject S8 with BMI of 23.39 kg/m2 has minimum cutting rate of 0.92 stroke/s. There was a statistically significant effect on the interaction between BMI, EE and Cutting rate, with F = 827.54, P = 0.000, R2 = 0.967 and S = 1.749 units. Subject S11 was discovered to have VO2 (28.54 l/min) and VO2max (24.36 ml/min/kg), with highest value of EE (2.94 kcal/min). Wear rates of 1.86 teeth/s and 9.55 teeth/s have the same energy cost (EE = 0.87 kcal/min) but different cutting time of 36.65 s (S18) and 10.89 s (S20) respectively. This could explain in-part that excess 25.76 s utilized in operation time by subject S18 is responsible for keeping approximately 7.7 teeth intact as regards tool management. EE and Tool Wear Rate in one-way analysis of variance, were statistically significant (F = 45.87, P = 0.000, R2 = 54.69% and S = 1.617 units) at 0.05 level.

Operations of Knapsack Sprayer and Its Impacts on Physiological Parameters of Selected Operators

The study was aimed at determining the impacts of operating Manually Operated Hand Lever Knapsack Sprayers (MOHLKS) on physiological responses of the operators as dependent on anthropometric variations and sex. Twenty eight subjects, (4 female, 24 male) Mean ± SD: Age 22.5 ± 1.92, 24.29 ± 2.2 years;Body Mass Index 24.6 ± 4.8, 21.7 ± 2.4 kg/m2 were employed in the study. Selected anthropometric parameters of weight and height were used to determine body mass index (BMI), with these are arm-reach forward, elbow to fingertip, hand length and hand width were measured to establish human variations in diversity. Subjects undertook the operation at 5 replicates each, before and after which information about operators’ body pain locations and body physiological changes of heart rates were obtained. Measured parameters were used in the determination of expended energy (EE), physiological cost (PC), oxygen intake (VO2) and aerobic power (VO2max). Alongside with these were operational parameters of stroke, pace and time taken to get the operation done and environmental factors of temperature and relative humidity. The results revealed on the average that the BMI (24.61 ± 4.78 kg/m2) in female operators was higher, this corresponded to PC and VO2, while the VO2max (34.83 ± 3.30 ml/min/kg) in males is higher. More EE was obtained in female subjects (3.53 ± 3.76 kCal/min) as compared to male subjects (3.42 ± 7.48 kCal/min). The main effects plot of operational factors on EE displayed the stroke made by the subjects during spraying operation as parameter with largest effect on EE. Regression equation for EE and PCI is given as PCI = 1.97 + 25.2 EE, while the P-value at α = 0.05 is 0.000 and R2 = 98.8%. Mobola plum seed methanolic extracts exhibit mixed type inhibition of angiotensinⅠ-converting enzyme in vitro

Objective: To explore the possible inhibitory potentials and mechanism by Mobola plum(Parinari curatellifolia) seeds crude methanol(CE) and flavonoid-rich(FE) extracts on angiotensin-1-converting enzyme(ACE Ⅰ).Methods: The sensitivity and kinetic model of inhibition of CE and FE on ACE Ⅰ using N-[3-(2-furyl)-acryloyl]-Phe-Gly-Gly as enzyme substrate for ACE Ⅰ was evaluated by Michealis Menten approach. The inhibition mechanism was explored from Lineweaver–Burk model and IC_(50) was determined from Cheng–Prusoff empirical ***: The IC_(50) of CE and FE were 13.54 and 39.38 mg/m L, respectively. Both extracts exhibited mixed type inhibition with the inhibitory constant(K_i) of CE was between0.38 and 0.37 mg/m L while that of FE showed a two-fold increase(1.62 mg/mL and0.28 mg/mL). FE on ACE Ⅰ demonstrated positive cooperativity with a Hill's coefficient ***: The study reveals the superior ACE Ⅰ inhibitory potential of CE over FE and suggest that mixed inhibition pattern of the enzyme might be the underlying mechanism of antihypertensive activity.

Phyto-metals screening of selected anti-diabetic herbs and infused concoctions

Objective: To determine the levels of some selected heavy metals in both the selected anti-diabetic herbal plants and infused concoctions for diabetes ***: Ten anti-diabetic plant samples: pawpaw leaves(Carica papaya), bitter melon leaves(Momordica charantia), holy basil leaves(Ocimum sanctum), bitter leaf(Vernonia amygdalina), ginger rhizome(Zingiber officinale), garlic(Allium sativum), African red pepper fruits(Capsicum frutescens), negro pepper grain(Xylopia aethiopica), cashew leaves(Anacardium occidentale) and onion bulb(Allium cepa) were evaluated for heavy metals. These were digested using standard methods and analyzed for manganese, copper,nickel, chromium, zinc, cadmium and lead using atomic absorption *** infused concoctions(I and II) prepared from these medicinal herbs administered to diabetic patients were also analyzed for these heavy metals. Concoction I contained all the plants and honey with the exception of Momordica charantia and Ocimum sanctum which constituted concoction II with water only. The data obtained were subject to descriptive(mean and standard deviation) and inferential(ANOVA and DMRT)***: Chromium and nickel levels were below detection limits in concoction I while manganese [(0.11 ± 0.01) μg/g] and zinc [(0.09 ± 0.01) μg/g] were detected in concoction II. Honey contained manganese [(0.10 ± 0.01) μg/g] and nickel [(0.70 ± 0.01) μg/g]. The anti-diabetic medicinal herbs and infused concoctions(I and II) were observed to contain heavy metals below the compared ***: The study thus shows that the herbs and concoctions are safe from the heavy metals considered. However, right dosage of the anti-diabetic concoctions should always be considered to prevent possible chronic side effects from bio-accumulation of heavy metals.

The effects of ethylacetate extract of red onion(Allium cepa)tunic(ACTE)on some hemodynamic and biochemical parameters were evaluated in normotensive albino *** pressure parameters were determined in anaesthetized rats orally administered ACTE(10-,20-,or 40 mg/kg)or ramipril(1 mg/kg)once daily for 14 ***,10-,20-,or 40 mg/kg ACTE produced significant(P<0.01),dose-dependent fall in systolic blood pressure,SBP(21%,27%,33%),diastolic blood pressure,DBP(6%,10%,16%),pulse pressure,PP(42%,49%,56%),mean arterial blood pressure,MAPB(13%,18%,23%)and heart rate,HR(4%,5%,7%).The highest effective dose(40 mg/kg)compared well with ramipril(1 mg/kg)with regards to SBP(41%),DBP(19%),PP(70%),MABP(29%)and HR(10%).Similar trends(decreases)were recorded for 40 mg/kg ACTE and ramipril,respectively,as regards the activities of serum enzymes:creatine kinase(60%and 65%),ALT(18%and 14%)and ALP(28%and 16%).HPLC fingerprints of the flavonoid-rich ACTE revealed that flavonols:quercetin,quercitrin,isoquercitrin,rutin and kaempferol are the active *** results demonstrate the hypotensive effect of *** tunic flavonoids initiating further investigation of their individual or synergistic contribution(s)to the observed effects.

Design parameters for a small-scale batch in-bin maize dryer

Early season maize is harvested with high moisture content that makes it impossible to store. The sale of early season maize in green form is uneconomical to the farmer. Experience had shown that farmers could hardly make the cost of production from their sales. Also, grain losses are high when maize is harvested green. To minimize grain losses and thereby increase value and the profit margin of the farmer, a grain dryer is necessary for wet grains. Therefore, this paper presents the design and development of a batch in-bin maize grain dryer. Some properties of maize such as moisture content and bulk density were determined to get information required for design of the dryer. The dimension of drying chamber, amount of moisture to be removed in a batch, quantity of air required to effect drying, volume of air required to effect drying, blower capacity, quantity of heat required to effect drying and actual heat used to effect drying were all designed for. A maize dryer was developed with a batch size of100 kg of threshed wet maize. The dryer can be used in laboratory for experimental purpose as well as on the farm for commercial purposes. The dryer can be used to measure drying rates of maize at different initial moisture contents, drying air temperatures, drying air velocities and grain beds. The effects of different drying temperature, air velocity, loading and agitating speed on the quality of dried maize can be investigated with the dryer.

Impact of Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy on the Salivary Levels of Tissue Inhibitor of Metalloproteinse-1 (TIMP-1) in Patients with Chronic Periodontitis: A Third World Experience

Chronic periodontitis is a disease of public health concern due to its high prevalence globally, especially in the elderly. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of non-surgical periodontal therapy on salivary levels of TIMP-1 among patients with chronic periodontitis in Nigeria. In this experimental study, unstimulated whole saliva (2 mL) was collected from participants in the experimental and control groups, coded (SP1-40 and SH1-40) respectively and assays for salivary TIMP-1as well as clinical measurements such as plaque (PI), probing depths (PD), and CAL were recorded before and 4 weeks after periodontal treatment. Assay was done using Quantikine human TIMP-1 ELISA kit. Data were presented using frequency tables, means and standard deviation. Paired-T Test assessed association between salivary TIMP-1 before and after treatment. Pearson correlation coefficient was used to correlate salivary TIMP-1 levels with clinical parameters of periodontal disease and levels of statistical significance were set at p < 0.05. A total of 80 respondents participated in the study of which 43.80% were females. Age range was 18 - 60 years with a mean of 35.8 ± 12.46 years. Salivary TIMP-1 levels were lower in the case group (13.58 ± 6.53 ng/mL) than the control (15.27 ± 6.10 ng/mL) at baseline but this was not statistically significant (p = 0.13). There was a statistically significant increase in the salivary levels of TIMP-1 in the case group after phase-one periodontal therapy from 13.58 ± 6.53 ng/mL to 17.24 ± 8.44 ng/mL (p = 0.001). Negative correlations were observed between TIMP-1 and clinical parameters of periodontitis. This was not statistically significant. Therefore, TIMP-1 may not be an ideal biomarker for periodontal diagnosis but may be useful in treatment monitoring of the disease.
