WAMS-based monitoring and control of Hopf bifurcations in multi-machine power systems

A method is proposed to monitor and control Hopf bifurcations in multi-machine power systems using the information from wide area measurement systems (WAMSs). The power method (PM) is adopted to compute the pair of conjugate eigenvalues with the algebraically largest real part and the corresponding eigenvectors of the Jacobian matrix of a power system. The distance between the current equilibrium point and the Hopf bifurcation set can be monitored dynamically by computing the pair of con- jugate eigenvalues. When the current equilibrium point is close to the Hopf bifurcation set, the approximate normal vector to the Hopf bifurcation set is computed and used as a direction to regulate control parameters to avoid a Hopf bifurcation in the power system described by differential algebraic equations (DAEs). The validity of the proposed method is demonstrated by regulating the reactive power loads in a 14-bus power system.

Efficient catalytic hydrogen generation by intermetallic platinum-lead nanostructures with highly tunable porous feature

The water-gas shift(WGS) reaction is an essential industrial reaction for upgrading hydrogen(H2) by removing carbon monoxide(CO), while highly efficient platinum(Pt)-based catalysts for WGS with simultaneously high activity and stability are still yet to be developed due to the poisoning issue during the reaction. Herein, we report on the porous PtPb peanut nanocrystals(porous PtPb PNCs) and porous PtPb octahedron nanocrystals(porous PtPb ONCs) with controllable ratios of Pt/Pb as extremely active and stable catalysts towards WGS reaction. It exhibits the composition-dependent activity with porous PtPb PNCs-40/ZnO being the most active for WGS to H_2, 16.9 times higher than that of the commercial Pt/C. The porous PtPb PNCs-40/ZnO also display outstanding durability with barely activity decay and negligible structure and composition changes after ten successive reaction cycles. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) results reveal that the suitable binding energy of Pt 4f_(7/2) and the high ratio of Pt(0)to Pt(II) in porous PtPb PNCs/ZnO and porous PtPb ONCs/ZnO are crucial for the enhanced WGS *** CO stripping results indicate the optimized CO adsorption strength on the Pt surface ensure the excellent WGS activity and the outstanding durability. The present work demonstrates an important advance in tuning the porous metal nanomaterials as highly efficient and durable catalysts for catalysis,energy conversion and beyond.

The role of velocity derivative skewness in understanding non-equilibrium turbulence

The turbulence governed by the Navier-Stokes equation is paramount in many physical ***,it has been considered as a challenging problem due to its inherent nonlinearity,non-equilibrium,and ***,we review the connections between the velocity derivative skewness Sk and the non-equilibrium properties of ***,a reasonable candidate for describing the non-equilibrium turbulence,which varies during the non-equilibrium procedure.A lot of experimental or numerical evidences have shown that the perturbation of energy spectrum,which associated with the excitation of large scales,results in an obvious variation of Sk,and Sk is a negative value in this rapid energy decay *** variation of positive Sk is closely related to the perturbation of transfer spectrum,and this corresponds to the backward energy transfer *** addition,the skewness characterizes the production(or reduction)rate of enstrophy due to vortex stretching(or compression).Using the transport equation of turbulent energy dissipation rate and enstrophy,it is possible to establish a theoretical connection between skewness and the non-equilibrium *** is expected that this work could trigger the rapid advancement of the future studies of non-equilibrium turbulence,and also the improvement of turbulence models.

Ultrahigh rate binder-free Na_3V_2(PO_4)_3/carbon cathode for sodium-ion battery

Sodium ion batteries （SIBs） are very promising for large-scale energy storage in virtue of its high energy density, abundant sodium resources and low environmental impact, etc. However, it is still a big chal- lenge to develop high-performance and durable cathode materials for SIBs. Among different candidate materials, Na_3V_2（PO_4）_3 has attracted great attentions due to its high theoretical capacity （117 mAh/g）, stable framework structure and excellent ionic conductivity. However, Na_3V_2（PO_4）_3 delivers inferior rate capability and cycling stability due to its poor electronic conductivity. In this work, free-standing Na_3V_2（PO_4）_3/carbon nanofiber membranes are synthesized by an electrospinning-sintering mute. The sample could deliver excellent cycling capability with specific capacity of 112 mAh/g at 1 C after 250 cycles and ultrahigh rate capability with 76.9 mAh/g even at 100 C, which is superior to many state-of- the-art SIB cathode materials. This can be attributed to the hierarchically distributed Na_3V_2（PO_4）_3 crystals in carbon nanofiber network, which possesses outstanding electronicfionic conductivity and thus leads to an ultrahigh rate capabilitY.

FairCF: fairness-aware collaborative filtering

Collaborative filtering(CF) techniques learn user and item embeddings from user-item interaction behaviors, and are commonly used in recommendation systems to help users find potentially desirable items. Most CF models optimize recommendation accuracy; however, they may lead to unwanted biases for particular demographic groups. Thus, we focus on learning fair representations of CF-based recommendations. We formulate this problem as an optimization task with two competing goals: embedding representations better meet accuracy requirements of recommendations, and simultaneously obfuscate information hidden in the embedding space, which is related to the users’ sensitive attributes for fairness. Here,the intuitive idea is to use fair representation learning from machine learning to train a classifier with a sensitive attribute predictor from the user side to satisfy the fairness goal. However, such fair machine learning models assume entity independence, which differs greatly from CF because users and items are correlated collaboratively via user-item behaviors. Therefore, sensitive user information can be exposed from the users’ preferred items. Consequently, defining only fairness constraints on users cannot achieve fairness in recommendation systems. In this paper, we propose FairCF framework for fairness-aware collaborative *** particular, we first define fairness constraints in a fair embedding space, where both a user classifier and an item classifier are employed to fit the fairness constraints. We then design an item classifier without item sensitive labels. The proposed framework can be trained in an end-to-end manner under most embedding based CF models. Extensive experiments conducted on three datasets(Movie lens-100K, Movie lens-1M,and Lastfm-360K) clearly demonstrate the superiority of the proposed FairCF framework relative to various fairness metrics(i.e., performance of newly-trained classifiers) than other state-of-the-art fairness-aware CF mode

Shale porosity measurement by the saturated oil method: Removing the contribution from oils dissolved in kerogen

Shale porosity measurements have crucial scientific and economical applications in unconventionalpetroleum systems. As a standard technique, liquid saturation methods, including water saturation (WS)and oil saturation (OS), have been widely used to measure the porosity of many rock types. For clay-richshale reservoirs with high organic matter content, it is well known that the WS method may cause clayswelling and induce structural changes in the pore system. The OS method affects the accuracy ofporosity measurements because of some of the oil being dissolved by kerogen within the shale;however,this has not received sufficient research attention. In this study, we compare the previously reported andnewly tested OS porosities with helium (He) expansion porosity. Results show that OS porosity generallyexceeds the He porosity. Furthermore, the higher the total organic carbon (TOC) content and lower thematurity of shale, the greater the difference between the OS and helium porosities. When using the OSmethod, the effect of kerogen-dissolved oil causes an overestimation of the shale porosity by ~30%. To thebest of our knowledge, this is the first time to note the kerogen-dissolve oil effects on OS porosity. Herein,we propose a new, simple, and effective correction method for estimating OS porosity that involvessubtracting the kerogen-dissolved oil content from raw OS porosity. In addition, the quantification modelof kerogen-dissolved oil capacity is established, taking into account the abundance and maturity oforganic matter. Taking the He porosity as the benchmark, the absolute error of the corrected OS porositydoes not exceed 1% and the average relative error is only ~10%. The obtained results can help improve theaccuracy of shale porosity evaluation methods.
