Arsenic variability and groundwater age in three water supply wells in southeast New Hampshire

Three wells in New Hampshire were sampled bimonthly over three years to evaluate the temporal variability of arsenic concentrations and groundwater *** samples had measurable concentrations of arsenic throughout the entire sampling period and concentrations in individual wells had a mean variation of more than 7 μg/*** time series data from this sampling effort showed that arsenic concentrations ranged from a median of 4 mg/L in a glacial aquifer well (SGW-65) to medians of 19 μg/L and 37 μg/L in wells (SGW-93 and KFW-87) screened in the bedrock aquifer,*** high arsenic concentrations were associated with the consistently high pH (median ≥- 8) and low dissolved oxygen (median ck aquifer wells,which is typical of fractured crystalline bedrock aquifers in New *** from the glacial aquifer often has high dissolved oxygen,but in this case was consistently *** pH also is generally acidic in the glacial aquifer but in this case was slightly alkaline (median =7.5).Also,sorption sites may be more abundant in glacial aquifer deposits than in fractured bedrock which may contribute to lower arsenic *** groundwater ages were less than 50 years old in all three wells and correlated with conservative tracer concentrations,such as chloride;however,mean age was not directly correlated with arsenic *** concentrations at KFW-87 did correlate with water levels,in addition,there was a seasonal pattern,which suggests that either the timing of or multiple sampling efforts may be important to define the full range of arsenic concentrations in domestic bedrock *** geochemically reduced conditions and alkaline pHs are common to both bedrock and glacial aquifer wells in this study,groundwater age correlates less strongly with arsenic concentrations than geochemical *** also is evidence of direct hydraulic connection between the glacial and bedrock aquifers,which can influe

Synthesis and Surface Tension Properties of Polyethyleneimine-Polyethylene Oxide Block copolymers

This paper describes the synthesis, surface tension and dispersancy properties of block copolymer nonionic surfactants comprised of polyethyleneimine (PEI) and polyethylene oxide (PEO) blocks of selected lengths. These block copolymers were prepared by a three step synthetic sequence. Firstly, PEO glycol was converted to its dimethanesulphonylester (dimesyl) derivative by reacting with methanesulphonyl chloride. Then a tri block polymer was prepared by the ring opening polymerization of 2 methyl 2 oxazoline (MeOZO) with the dimesyl PEO derivative. Lastly, linear PEI blocks were obtained by subsequent hydrolysis and purification. 1H NMR spectra confirmed the structures of the intermediate, final products and their purities (>99%). The utility of these block copolymers is described in terms of their surface tension and clay dispersancy measurements as a function of copolymer chain and block length.

SO(n)-Invariant Special Lagrangian Submanifolds of c^(n+1) with Fixed Loci

Let SO（n） act in the standard way on c^n and extend this action in the usual way to c^n＋l = c＋ c^n. It is shown that a nonsingular special Lagrangian submanifold L→∪ c^n＋l that is invariant under this SO（n）-action intersects the fixed c→∪ c^n＋1 in a nonsingular real-analytic arc A （which may be empty）. If n 〉 2, then A has no compact component. conversely, an embedded, noncompact nonsingular real-analytic arc A→∪ c lies in an embedded nonsingular special Lagrangian submanifold that is SO（n）-invariant. The same existence result holds for compact A if n =2. nonsingular SO（n）-invariant special Lagrangian nonsingular SO（n）-invariant special Lagrangian extensions in some open neighborhood of A. If A is connected, there exist n distinct extensions of A such that any embedded extension of A agrees with one of these n The method employed is an analysis of a singular nonlinear PDE and ultimately calls on the work of Gerard and Tahara to prove the existence of the extension.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders causing patients to seek medical treatment. It is relatively resource intensive and the source of significant morbidity. Recent insights into the pathophysiology and treatment of IBS has given clinicians more options than ever to contend with this disorder. The purpose of our paper is to review older, “classic” treatments for IBS as well as newer agents and “alternative” therapies. We discuss the evidence base of these drugs and provide context to help develop appropriate treatment plans for IBS patients.

Use of incipient motion data for backward erosion piping models

Backward erosion piping involves the gradual removal of granular material under the action of water flow from the foundation of a dam or levee, whereby shallow pipes are formed that grow in the direction opposite to the flow. This pipe-forming process can ultimately lead to failure of a water-retaining structure and is considered one of the most important failure mechanisms for dikes and levees in the Netherlands and the United States. Modeling of this mechanism requires the assessment of hydraulic conditions in the pipe, which are controlled by the particle equilibrium at the pipe wall. Since the pipe’s dimensions are controlled by the inflow to the pipe from the porous medium, the flow through the pipe is thought to be laminar for fine-to medium-grained sands. The literature provides data for incipient motion in laminar flow, which is reviewed here and complemented with data from backward erosion experiments. The experiments illustrate the applicability of the laminar incipient motion data to determine the erosion pipe dimensions and corresponding pipe hydraulics for fine-to medium-grained sands, for the purpose of backward erosion piping modeling.

What Happens after the Puerperium? Analysis of “Late” Postpartum Readmissions in california

Objective: Admissions to acute care hospitals represent a significant portion of healthcare utilization. Little is known regarding hospitalization in the first postpartum year beyond the traditional 6 weeks of the puerperium. We sought to investigate whether there are identifiable risk factors for hospital readmission during this time period. Study Design: We conducted a retrospective population-based study using all california birth records between 1999 and 2003. These records were linked with hospital discharge data for all admissions to california hospitals in the first 365 days after delivery. For women with a first birth during the study period, we assessed the likelihood of readmission to an acute care hospital between 42 and 365 days post-delivery. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression were used to determine risk factors for these “late postpartum” admissions. Results: Of 951,570 maternal birth admissions during the time period, 15,727 (1.7%) women were admitted in the late postpartum period. Women with an early postpartum readmission, antepartum admission, extremes of maternal age, black race, diabetes, hypertension, early preterm delivery and cesarean delivery had higher rates of late postpartum readmission. Of women with an antepartum admission for gestational diabetes or pre-existing diabetes, 6.6% and 18.5% of these women experienced a late postpartum admission for a diabetes-related diagnosis. conclusion: Hospital readmission rates in the first year postpartum, remote from delivery, are significant. Women are at a higher risk of requiring hospital admission in the first year postpartum with select demographics and pregnancy-related diagnoses.

Neurological complications associated with HIV-1/AIDS are being recognized with a high frequency that parallels the increased number of AIDS cases. The early infiltration by HIV-1 into the nervous system can cause primary and/or secondary neurological complications. The most common neurocognitive disorder is AIDS Dementia complex (ADc). In developing countries of Asia the three most opportunistic infections are tuberculosis (TB), cryptococcosis, and Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. Therefore, it is expected that secondary neurological complications due to TB and cryptococcosis will be the most common cause of morbility and mortality in HIV-1/AIDS cases in china. Research of NeuroAIDS in china is necessary to understand the impact and the biology of HIV-1 in the nervous system. Future studies would include, the molecular epidemiology and the description of opportunistic infections associated to HIV-1; the neuropathological description of primary and secondary HIV-1 complications in different groups; the HIV-1 neurot- ropism and immune response studies for china’s unique HIV-1 strains and recombinant forms derived from the nervous system, including experimental models such as the use of transgenic rats; and the study of potential resistant virus, primarily when the anti-retroviral therapy (ART) has not full access in the brain.

Effects of a 3-month vigorous physical activity intervention on eating behaviors and body composition in overweight and obese boys and girls

Purpose: This study aims to analyze the effects of a 3-month vigorous physical activity(VPA) intervention on eating behavior and body composition in overweight and obese children and ***: Forty-seven participants(7–16 years) took part in the study: 28 were assigned to the intervention group(IG)(10 boys and 18 girls) and19 in a control group(cG)(8 boys and 11 girls). Body composition(dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry), anthropometrics(body mass, height, and body mass index(BMI)), and eating behavior traits(Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire-R21 c) were determined before and after the VPA ***: A decrease in the percentage of body fat and BMI(-2.8% and-1.8%, respectively), and an increase in most lean mass variables were found in the IG(all p ≤ 0.05). In relation to the eating behavior traits, IG subjects showed a 14% reduction in the Emotional Eating score(p = 0.04),while cognitive Restraint score did not change after the VPA intervention. The baseline factors of the questionnaire predicted changes in body mass and fat mass variables only in the ***: A 3-month VPA intervention influenced eating behaviors of overweight or obese young, especially the Emotional Eating factor, in the presence of favorable body composition changes.

Molecular hydrogen isotope analysis preformed on modern and fossil plants has made a significant impact on diverse research fields in biology and geology. Using living and fossil Metasequoia as an example, we review the technology of online Gc-IRMS that made the molecular analysis of hydrogen isotope possible and discuss critical issues concerning with the studies of molecular dD and its applications. The apparent hydrogen fractionation factors between lipid molecules and source water (ewater–lipid) vary across plant taxonomy and differ among biomolecules and are affected by multiple environmental factors in which precipitation dD values exercise the first order of control. Eco-physiological factors and environmental parameters are also known to influence dD in plants. Molecular hydrogen isotope analysis of chemically stable lipid molecules, such as n-alkanes, finds a wide range of applications in detecting source sediments, reconstruction of paleoclimatic parameters, inference of air-mass trajectory, as well as in petroleum industry and environmental studies.
