Chromium(Cr)is used in many manufacturing processes,and its release into natural waters is a major environmental problem *** concentrations of Cr(Ⅵ)are toxic to human health and living organisms due to the carcinogenic and mutagenic nature of this *** work examined the conversion of Cr(Ⅵ)to Cr(Ⅲ)via electrochemical reduction using gold electrode in an acidic sodium alginate(SA)solution and subsequent removal of the produced Cr(Ⅲ)-SA by the polymer-enhanced ultrafiltration(PeUF)technique.A solution of SA in nitric acid was used both as an electrolytic medium during the voltammetric measurements and bulk electrolysis and as an extracting agent during the PeUF *** electroanalysis of Cr(Ⅵ)was performed by linear sweep voltammetry in the presence of acidic SA solution to study its voltammetric behavior as a function of the Cr(Ⅵ)concentration,pH,presence of Cr(Ⅲ),SA concentration and scan *** addition,the quantitative reduction of Cr(Ⅵ)to Cr(Ⅲ)was studied through the bulk electrolysis *** results showed efficient reduction with well-defined peaks at approximately 0.3 v ***/AgCl,using a gold working *** the pH increased,the reduction signal strongly decreased until its *** optimum SA concentration was 10 mmol/L,and it was observed that the presence of Cr(Ⅲ)did not interfere in the Cr(Ⅵ)*** the quantitative reduction by bulk electrolysis in the presence of acidic SA solution,it was possible to reduce all Cr(Ⅵ)to Cr(Ⅲ)followed by its removal via PeUF.

AIM:To assess adherence with the the Society for Healthcare epidemiology of America(SHeA)/the Infectious Diseases Society of America(IDSA)guidelines for management of Clostridium difficile(***)-associated disease(CDAD)at a tertiary medical ***:All positive *** stool toxin assays in adults between May 2010 and May 2011 at the University of Maryland Medical Center were *** episodes were classified as guideline adherent or nonadherent and these two groups were compared to determine demographic and clinical factors predictive of *** regression analysis was performed to assess the effect of multiple predictors on guideline ***:320 positive *** stool tests were identified in 290 *** by disease severity criteria set forth by the SHeA/IDSA guidelines,42.2%of cases were mild-moderate,48.1%severe,and 9.7%*** adherence with the guidelines was observed in only 43.4%of *** was65.9%for mild-moderate CDAD,which was significantly better than in severe cases(25.3%)or severe-complicated cases(35.5%)(Pere was no difference in demographics,hospitalization,ICU exposure,recurrence or 30-d mortality between adherent and non-adherent groups.A multivariate model revealed significantly decreased adherence for severe or severecomplicated episodes(OR=0.18,95%CI:0.11-0.30)and recurrent episodes(OR=0.46,95%CI:0.23-0.95).CONCLUSION:Overall adherence with the SHeA/IDSA guidelines for management of CDAD at a tertiary medical center was poor;this was most pronounced in severe,severe-complicated and recurrent *** interventions aimed at improving guideline adherence are warranted.

Conserving and restoring the Caicos pine forests: The first decade

The severe and rapid attack on the Caicos pine Pinus caribaea var. bahamensis(Pinaceae) by the nonnative invasive pine tortoise scale, Toumeyella parvicornis, has resulted in the death of most of the trees in the Turks and Caicos Islands(TCI) in just over a decade. Local and international conservation efforts have enabled the necessary multi-disciplinary research, data gathering, and monitoring to develop and implement a restoration strategy for this endemic tree from the Bahaman archipelago. The native plant nursery established on North Caicos and horticultural expertise acquired throughout the years were crucial to the successful rescue of Caicos pine saplings from the wild populations and cultivation of new saplings grown from locally sourced seeds. These saplings have been used to establish six Restoration Trial Plots on Pine Cay and a seed orchard on North Caicos in TCI. Core Conservation Areas(CCAs) for the Caicos pine forests have been identified and mapped. To date, forest within the Pine Cay CCA has been supplemented by planting more than 450 pine trees, which have survived at a high(>80%)rate.

A novel embedded sensor network records changes in key climatic-environmental variables over a range of altitude in the BaekduDaegan Mountain （BDM） of Gangwon Province in Korea, a protected mountain region with unique biodiversity undergoing climate change research. The investigated area is subdivided into three horizontal north-south study areas. Three variables, temperature （T, °C）, relative humidity （RH, %）, and light intensity （LI, lumens m-2, or lux, lx）, have been continuously measured at hourly intervals from June, 2olo to September, 2011 using HOBO H8 devices at lO fixed study sites. These hourly observations are aggregated to monthly, seasonal and annual mean values, and results are summarized to inaugurate a long-term climate change investigation. A region wide T difference in accordance with altitude, or lapse rate, over the interval is calculated as o.4°C l00 m-1. T lapse rates change seasonally, with winter lapse rates being greater than those of summer. RH is elevated in summer compared to other seasons. LI within forestland is lower during summer and higher during other seasons. The obtained results could closely relate to the vegetation type and structure and the terrain state since data loggers were located in forestland.

Presented is a review of the radiative properties of ice clouds from three perspectives： light scattering simulations, remote sensing applications, and broadband radiation parameterizations appropriate for numerical models. On the subject of light scattering simulations, several classical computational approaches are reviewed, including the conventional geometric-optics method and its improved forms, the finite-difference time domain technique, the pseudo-spectral time domain technique, the discrete dipole approximation method, and the T-matrix method, with specific applications to the computation of the singlescattering properties of individual ice crystals. The strengths and weaknesses associated with each approach are *** reference to remote sensing, operational retrieval algorithms are reviewed for retrieving cloud optical depth and effective particle size based on solar or thermal infrared（IR） bands. To illustrate the performance of the current solar- and IR-based retrievals, two case studies are presented based on spaceborne observations. The need for a more realistic ice cloud optical model to obtain spectrally consistent retrievals is demonstrated. Furthermore, to complement ice cloud property studies based on passive radiometric measurements, the advantage of incorporating lidar and/or polarimetric measurements is *** performance of ice cloud models based on the use of different ice habits to represent ice particles is illustrated by comparing model results with satellite observations. A summary is provided of a number of parameterization schemes for ice cloud radiative properties that were developed for application to broadband radiative transfer submodels within general circulation models（GCMs）. The availability of the single-scattering properties of complex ice habits has led to more accurate radiation parameterizations. BACKGROUND: Non-convulsive seizure(NCS) is an underdiagnosed, potentially treatable emergency with significant mortality and morbidity. The objective of this study is to examine the characteristics of patients with NCS presenting with altered mental status(AMS) and diagnosed with electroencephalography(eeG), to identify the factors that could increase the pre-test probability of ***: Retrospective study using the data collected prospectively. Inclusion criteria: patients older than 13 years with AMS. exclusion criteria:(1) immediately correctable AMS(e.g., hypoglycemia, opiod overdose);(2) inability to undergo eeG;(3) hemodynamic instability. Outcomes compared between NCS and non-NCS cases: vital signs, lactate level, gender, witnessed seizure, use of anticonvulsive in the field or in the eD, history of seizure or stroke, head injury, abnormal neurological finding and new abnormal findings on head CT. Data presented as medians and quartiles for categorical and percentages with 95%CI for continuous variables. Univariate analyses were performed with Man-Whitney U and Fisher's exact tests. A multivariate analysis model was used to test the predictive value of clinical variables in identifying ***: From 332 patients(median age 66 years, quartiles 50–78), 16 were diagnosed with NCS(5%, 95%CI 3%–8%). Only age was signifi cantly different between the NCS vs. non-NCS groups in both univariate(P=0.032) and multivariate analyses(P=0.016).CONCLUSION: Other than age, no other clinically useful variable could identify patients at high risk of NCS. eD physicians should have a high suspicion for NCS and should order eeG for these patients more liberally.
