Avoiding,reducing,and reversing land degradation and restoring degraded land is an urgent priority to protect the biodiversity and ecosystem services that are vital to life on *** halt and reverse the current trends in land degradation,there is an immediate need to enhance national capacities to undertake quantitative assessments and mapping of their degraded lands,as required by the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs),in particular,the SDG indicator 15.3.1(“proportion of land that is degraded over total land area”).Earth Observations(EO)can play an important role both for generating this indicator as well as complementing or enhancing national official data *** like *** to monitor land degradation in accordance with the SDG15.3.1 rely on default datasets of coarse spatial resolution provided by MODIS or ***,there is a need to develop methodologies to benefit from medium to high-resolution satellite EO data(*** or Sentinels).In response to this issue,this paper presents an initial overview of an innovative approach to monitor land degradation at the national scale in compliance with the SDG15.3.1 indicator using Landsat observations using a data cube but further work is required to improve the calculation of the three sub-indicators.

Flow fields and particle trajectories beneath a tidal bore:A numerical study

Tidal bores may appear in some estuaries when the tides quickly reach a high level. This phenomenon is rare but has a strong impact during its short duration: i.e. the river bed is significantly eroded and sediments are then transported. In this paper, the trajectories of suspended particles induced by this flow are numerically studied. Four undular bores with Froude numbers between 1.1 and 1.2 are *** similar Froude numbers, various initial flow conditions were selected to produce or not an inversion of the flow direction during the bore passage. The particle trajectories associated with each distinct flow configuration are presented and analyzed. These trajectories, estimated by solving the Maxey-Riley equation, appear to be very different even though the Froude numbers of flows are *** observations are important because the Froude number is often used to characterize a tidal bore as it describes well the free surface, however, it cannot describe the sediment transport. Finally, Chen’s model of wave-current interactions is adapted to fit the cases studied and is applied to the four bores simulated. The results highlight that this latter model can reproduce the observed trajectories and dissociate their different components. From this model, it is shown that the inertial and Basset history effects can be neglected compared to the gravity and flow entrainment effects due to the viscous drag when one wants to determine the long-term trajectories of suspended particles.

Exacerbated by climate change,Europe has experienced series of hot and dry summer since the beginning of the 21st *** importance of land conditions became an international concern with a dedicated sustainable development goal(SDG),the SDG *** calls for developing and finding innovative solu-tions to follow and evaluate impacts of changing land condi-tions induced by various driving *** Switzerland,drought risk will significantly increase in the coming decades with severe consequences on agriculture,energy production and *** this paper,we used a 35-year satellite-derived annual and seasonal times-series of normalized difference water index(NDWI)to follow vegetation water content evolution at different spatial and temporal scales across Switzerland and related them to temperature and precipitation to investigate possible responses of changing climatic *** indicate that there is a small and slow drying tendency at the country scale with a NDWI mean decreasing slope of−0.22%/year for the 23%significant pixels across *** tendency is mostly visible below 2000 m above sea level(m.a.s.l.)and in all biogeographical *** Southern Alps regions appear to be more responsive to changing drying conditions with a significant and slight negative NDWI trend(−0.39%/year)over the last 35 ***,NDWI values are mostly a func-tion of temperature at elevations below the tree line rather than *** suggest that multi-annual and seasonal NDWI can be a valuable indicator to monitor vegetation water content at different scales,but other components such as land cover type and evapotranspiration should be considered to better characterize NDWI *** Earth Observations data can provide valuable complementary obser-vations for national statistics on the ecological state of vegeta-tion to support SDG 15 to monitor land affected by drying conditions.

Ventricular remodelling is the main trigger of the development of heart failure. Therefore, the reduction of structural remodelling is known to prevent the development of heart failure. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of OMACOR?, a well known mixture of EPA and DHA in an experimental model of heart failure induced by occlusion of left descending coronary artery and the reperfusion within 2 months. After a long term treatment of 2 months;OMACOR? (100 mg/kg) statistically significantly reduced the expansion of infarcted zone (35% ± 4%, P ± 3% in the vehicle group). The phosphorylation of Cx43 as biomarker of the cardiac remodelling was visualised by immunofluorescence in rat’s heart at the end of the study. In the vehicle-infarcted group, a significant de-phosphorylation of Cx43 was observed (8.2 ± 1.0 u.a, n = 8 compared to 11.8 ± 1.3 u.a in the sham group, n = 9) confirming a remodelling process in the infarcted group. In the group treated with OMACOR?,the de-phosphorylation of Cx43 was no longer observed compared to the sham group (16.4 ± 2.9 u.a, n = 9, NS). The present results demonstrate that a long term treatment with OMA-COR? reduced the infarcted size in experimental models of heart failure and that these anti-remodelling effects are due at least in part by resynchronizing the gap junction activity.

AIM To prospectively evaluate the performance of Dopplerultrasonography(US) for the detection of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt(TIPS) dysfunction within a multicenter cohort of cirrhotic *** This study was conducted in 10 french teaching hospitals. After TIPS insertion, angiography and liver Doppler-US were carried out every six months to detect dysfunction(defined by a portosystemic gradient ≥ 12 mm Hg and/or a stent stenosis ≥ 50%). The association between ultrasonographic signs and dysfunction was studied by logistic random-effects models, and the diagnostic performance of each Doppler criterion was estimated by the bootstrap method. This study was approved by the ethics committee of *** Two hundred and eighteen pairs of examinations performed on 87 cirrhotic patients were analyzed. Variables significantly associated with dysfunction were: The speed of flow in the portal vein(P = 0.008), the reversal of flow in the right(P = 0.038) and left(P = 0.049) portal branch, the loss of modulation of portal flow by the right atrium(P = 0.0005), ascites(P = 0.001) and the overall impression of the operator(P = 0.0001). The diagnostic performances of these variables were low; sensitivity was ruled out from Doppler-US. CONCLUSION The performance of Doppler-US for the detection of TIPS dysfunction is poor compared to angiography. New tools are needed to improve diagnosis of TIPS dysfunction.

AIM To assess magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) and faecal calprotectin to detect endoscopic postoperative recurrence in patients with Crohn's disease(CD).METHODS From two tertiary centers, all patients with CD who underwent ileocolonic resection were consecutively and prospectively included. All the patients underwent MRI and endoscopy within the first year after surgery or after the restoration of intestinal continuity [median = 6 mo(5.0-9.3)]. The stools were collected the day before the colonoscopy to evaluate faecal calprotectin level. Endoscopic postoperative recurrence(POR) was defined as rutgeerts' index ≥ i2b. The MRI was analyzed independently by two radiologists blinded from clinical *** Apparent diffusion coefficient(ADC) was lower in patients with endoscopic POR compared to those with no recurrence(2.03 ± 0.32 vs 2.27 ± 0.38 × 10^(-3) mm^2/s, P = 0.032). Clermont score(10.4 ± 5.8 vs 7.4 ± 4.5, P = 0.038) and relative contrast enhancement(RCE)(129.4% ± 62.8% vs 76.4% ± 32.6%, P = 0.007) were significantly associated with endoscopic POR contrary to the magnetic resonance index of activity(Ma RIA)(7.3 ± 4.5 vs 4.8 ± 3.7; P = 0.15) and MR scoring system(P = 0.056). ADC 100%(sensitivity = 0.75, specificity = 0.81, PPV = 0.75, NPV = 0.81) were the best cutoff values to identify endoscopic POR. Clermont score > 6.4(sensitivity = 0.61, specificity = 0.82, PPV = 0.73, NPV = 0.74), Ma RIA > 3.76(sensitivity = 0.61, specificity = 0.82, PPV = 0.73, NPV = 0.74) and a MR scoring system ≥ MR1(sensitivity = 0.54, specificity = 0.82, PPV = 0.70, and NPV = 0.70) demonstrated interesting performances to detect endoscopic POR. Feasibility of Using Wood Chips to Regulate Relative Humidity Inside a Building: A Numerical Study

The use of bio-based materials in buildings has become more and more significant last *** most of the cases,their health properties and natural provenance have made them a great solution to face global climate warming and the new policies to reduce building energy *** many thermal problems,biobased materials can allow to optimize the building thermal behavior according to its energy consumption and inside comfort *** it is when they are used as an insulation material in the ***,it is not the case in this *** fact,the bio-based matter is rather used as a desiccant wheel to control air conditioning inside the *** aim of this paper is to numerically verify if it is possible to use a bed of wood chips as a hygroscopic material(or a desiccant matter)in order to modify the relative humidity inside the building in Reunion Island and so improve thermal comfort.A simple model of heat and mass transfer between a bed of wood chips and building inside air has been set up and implemented into a validated building simulation code named *** simulations were set up for the four climate zones of the island regulations and a focus has been made on the low altitude one(with high,solar irradiation,temperature and relative humidity).Simulation results give the thermal behavior of the building particularly the temperature and relative humidity of inside air temperature,and temperature and moisture content of wood *** obtained results lead to determine if the wood chips bed is suitable for the reference building and to verify its technical feasibility(wood species,size of the bed,integration to the building,etc.).The results show that the use of a WCB help to decrease the building inside air temperature and water content up to 10°C less and 11.6 ***-1 *** are the ways to improve inside comfort ***,comfort analysis have shown the possibility to significantly increase building users’thermal comfort
