The extent to which prey abundance influences both bottlenose dolphin foraging behavior and group size in the presence of human activities has not previously been *** primary aim of this study was to identify and quantify how wild bottlenose dolphins respond,individually and as groups,to the relative abundance of prey around a fish *** views of dolphins' behavior were obtained by focal following individual animals whilst simultaneously collecting surface and underwater behavioral data.A total of 2150 dive intervals were analyzed,corresponding to 342 focal samples,lasting over 34 *** dolphins remained submerged for a mean duration of 46.4 seconds and a maximum of 249 *** study provides the first quantified data on bottlenose dolphin diving behavior in a marine fin-fish farm *** study's results indicate that within a fish farm area used intensively by bottlenose dolphins for feeding,dolphins did not modify dive ***,underwater observations confirmed that dolphins find it easier to exploit a concentrated food source and it appears that hunting tactic and not group size plays an important role during feeding ***,bottlenose dolphins appear capable of modifying their hunting tactics according to the abundance of *** top predators display behavioral responses to activities not directed at them,the task of studying all possible effects of human activities can become even more challenging.

Using the matrix method, spin-dependent tunneling properties such as barrier transparency, the degree of resonance polarization, and tunneling lifetime of electrons are examined in the non-magnetic/diluted magnetic semiconductor heterostructure. The effects of the double δ-potential and the magnetic field are discussed on the transport properties of the electrons. The introduction of double δ-potential shifts the resonance peak of polarization to the higher energy value. Both height and position of the δ-potential influence the degree of resonance polarization in the considered heterostructure. The increasing magnetic field enhances the spin-polarization.

The influence of grafting on agronomical and qualitative characteristics of four Sicilian eggplant landraces was investigated. Grafted and ungrafted plants were compared in the open field in the northern coast of Sicily. Solanum torvum seedlings were used as rootstock. Regardless of genotypes tested, grafting significantly increased total fruit production, marketable production, and number of marketable fruits, but did not affect weight of marketable fruits and waste production. landrace 2（Sciacca）, with black epidermal tissue and pyriform fruit shape, when grafted onto S. torvum not only gave a higher yield performance than ungrafted plants, but also showed a higher phenolic antioxidant content. landrace 4（Sicilia）, with black epidermal tissue and small cylindrical fruits also benefited, when grafted onto S. torvum, from a substantial increase in antioxidant fruit content. As consumers＇ demand for fruits and vegetables rich in compounds important for human health is steadily increasing, these landrace/rootstock combinations should deserve more attention by plant nurseries involved in grafted seedling production and interested in the valorization and conservation of eggplant biodiversity.

Industrial hails are characterized with their retatively high roof-to-floor ratio, which facilitates ready deployment of renewable energy generation, such as photovoltaic （PV） systems, on the rooftop. To promote deployment of renewable energy generation, feed-in tariff （FIT） higher than the electricity rate is available in many countries to subsidize the capital investment. FIT comes in different forms. For net FIT, in order to maximize the economic benefit, surplus electridty generation at each hour is desirable. One way to achieve surplus electricity generation is by increasing generation capacity, which is synonymous to higher capital investment. In fact, surplus electricity generation can also be achieved by lowering the energy demand of the building. This particularly the case for industrial hatls, which are usually subject to high energy demand for space conditioning in order to remove the excess heat gain due to the many power-intensive processes. Building energy performance simulation toots can be used to explore the different building design options that could lower the energy demand. In this paper, single-objective optimization on investment return will be deployed to study the cost effectiveness among different options in lowering energv demand. It Will-be demonstrated with a case study of a warehouse.

Fragility curves are commonly used in civil engineering to assess the vulnerability of structures to earthquakes. The probability of failure associated with a prescribed criterion （e.g., the maximal inter-storey drift of a building exceeding a certain threshold） is represented as a function of the intensity of the earthquake ground motion （e.g., peak ground acceleration or spectral acceleration）. The classical approach relies on assuming a lognormal shape of the fragility curves; it is thus parametric. In this paper, we introduce two non-parametric approaches to establish the fragility curves without employing the above assumption, namely binned Monte Carlo simulation and kernel density estimation. As an illustration, we compute the fragility curves for a three-storey steel frame using a large number of synthetic ground motions. The curves obtained with the non-parametric approaches are compared with respective curves based on the lognormal assumption. A similar comparison is presented for a case when a limited number of recorded ground motions is available. It is found that the accuracy of the lognormal curves depends on the ground motion intensity measure, the failure criterion and most importantly, on the employed method for estimating the parameters of the lognormal shape.

Electrooxidation of sulfanilamide and its voltammetric determination in pharmaceutical formulation,human urine and serum on glassy carbon electrode

For the first time, sulfanilamide(SFD) was determined in otologic solution, human urine and serum by electroanalytical techniques on glassy carbon electrode(GCE). The cyclic voltammetry(CV) experiments showed an irreversible oxidation peak at t 1.06 V in 0.1 mol/l BRBS(p H ? 2.0) at 50 m V/s. Different voltammetric scan rates(from 10 to 250 m V/s) suggested that the oxidation of SFD on the GCE was a diffusioncontrolled process. Square-wave voltammetry(SWV) method under optimized conditions showed a linear response to SFD from 5.0 to 74.7 μmol/l(R ? 0.999) with detection and quantification limits of 0.92 and3.10 μmol/l, respectively. The developed SWV method showed better results for detection limit and linear range than the chronoamperometry method. It has been successfully applied to determine SFD concentration in pharmaceutical formulation, human urine and serum samples with recovery close to 100%.

The spin-dependent tunneling of light holes and heavy holes was analysed in a symmetrical heterostructure with externally applied electric and magnetic fields. The effects of the applied bias voltage, magnetic field and reverse bias were discussed for the polarization efficiency of light holes and heavy holes. The current density of spin-up and spin-down light holes increases as the bias voltage increases and reaches the saturation, whereas the current density of spin-up heavy holes is almost negligible. The applied bias voltage and the magnetic field highly influence the energy of resonance polarization, polarization efficiency, and the current density of heavy holes more than for the light holes.

Ethnobotanical studies in the Balkans are crucial for fostering sustainable rural development in the region and also for investigating the dynamics of change of Traditional Ecological Knowledge(TEK),which has broad-sweeping implications for future biodiversity conservation efforts.A survey of local botanical and medical knowledge and practices was conducted in four mountainous villages of the Peshkopia region in northeast Albania,near the Macedonian *** sampling techniques were employed to recruit 32 informants for participation in semi-structured interviews regarding the use of the local flora for food,medicinal,veterinary and ritual *** uses of 84 botanical taxa were recorded as well as a number of other folk remedies for the treatment of both humans and *** of the collected data with another ethnobotanical field study recently conducted among Albanians living on the Macedonian side of Mount Korab shows a remarkable divergence in medicinal plant uses,thus confirming the crucial role played by the history of the last century in transforming *** noteworthy,as a legacy of the Communist period,a relevant number of wild medicinal taxa are still gathered only for trade rather than personal/familial *** may lead to unsustainable exploitation of certain taxa(*** and Gentiana spp.) and presents some important conservation *** development and environmental educational frameworks should aim to reconnect local people to the perception of limitation and renewability of botanical resources.

A conditioned level-set method with block-division strategy to flame front extraction based on OH-PlIF measurements

A novel approach to extract flame fronts, which is called the conditioned level-set method with block division （ClSB）, has been developed. Based on a two-phase level-set formulation, the conditioned initialization and region-lock optimiza-tion appear to be beneficial to improve the efficiency and accuracy of the flame contour identification. The original block- division strategy enables the approach to be unsupervised by calculating local self-adaptive threshold values autonomously before binarization. The ClSB approach has been applied to deal with a large set of experimental data involving swirl- stabilized premixed combustion in diluted regimes operating at atmospheric pressures. The OH-PlIF measurements have been carried out in this framework. The resulting images are, thus, featured by lower signal-to-noise ratios （SNRs） than the ideal image; relatively complex flame structures lead to significant non-uniformity in the OH signal intensity; and, the mag- nitude of the maximum OH gradient observed along the flame front can also vary depending on flow or local stoichiometry. Compared with other conventional edge detection operators, the ClSB method demonstrates a good ability to deal with the OH-PlIF images at low SNR and with the presence of a multiple scales of both OH intensity and OH gradient. The robustness to noise sensitivity and intensity inhomogeneity has been evaluated throughout a range of experimental images of diluted flames, as well as against a circle test as Ground Truth （GT）.
