A method based on a crop simulation model is proposed to account for within-field variability in recommending nitrogen rates for wheat.A criterion combining gross margin maximization and the limitation of nitrogen balance was proposed to account for economic and environmental constraints.An alternative method was proposed for characterizing soil variability at a high spatial resolution that is based on the assimilation into the crop model of information on leaf area index and nitrogen uptake obtained from remote sensing measurements.This latter enabled us to improve yield simulation RMSE from 1.81 to 0.73 t ha, An evaluation of the interest of the method,in a strategic way,was made thanks to model simulation, taking into account both economic and environmental aspects.

Characterization of atmospheric aerosol (PM10 and PM2.5) from a medium sized city in S?o Paulo state,Brazil

Air pollution causes deleterious effects on human health with aerosols being among the most polluting agents.The objective of this work is the characterization of the PM2.5 and PM10 aerosol mass in the atmosphere.The methods of analysis include WD-XRF and EDS.Data were correlated with meteorological information and air mass trajectories(model HYSPLIT)by multivariate analysis.A morphological structural analysis was also carried out to identify the probable sources of atmospheric aerosols in the city of Sao Jose do Rio Preto,Brazil.The mean mass concentration values obtained were 24.54 μg/m^3 for PM10,above the WHO annual standard value of 20 μg/m^3 and 10.88 μg/m^3 for PM2.5 whose WHO recommended limit is10 μg/m^3.WD-XRF analysis of the samples revealed Si and Al as major components of the coarse fraction.In the fine fraction,the major elements were Al and S.The SEM-FEG characterization allowed identifying the morphology of the particles in agglomerates,ellipsoids and filaments in the PM10,besides spherical in the PM2.5.The analysis by EDS corroborated WD-XRF results,identifying the crustal elements,aluminosilicates and elements of anthropogenic origin in the coarse fraction.For the fine fraction crustal elements were also identified;aluminosilicates,black carbon and spherical particles(C and O) originating from combustion processes were predominant.The use of multivariate analysis to correlate air mass trajectories with the results of the morpho-structural characterization of the particulate matter allowed confirmation of the complex composition of the particles resulting from the combination of both local and long-distance sources.

Identification of neurons responsible for feeding behavior in the Drosophila brain

Drosophila melanogaster feeds mainly on rotten fruits,which contain many kinds of sugar.Thus,the sense of sweet taste has evolved to serve as a dominant regulator and driver of feeding behavior.Although several sugar receptors have been described,it remains poorly understood how the sensory input is transformed into an appetitive behavior.Here,we used a neural silencing approach to screen brain circuits,and identified neurons labeled by three Gal4 lines that modulate Drosophila feeding behavior.These three Gal4 lines labeled neurons mainly in the suboesophageal ganglia(SOG),which is considered to be the fly’s primary taste center.When we blocked the activity of these neurons,flies decreased their sugar consumption significantly.In contrast,activation of these neurons resulted in enhanced feeding behavior and increased food consumption not only towards sugar,but to an array of food sources.Moreover,upon neuronal activation,the flies demonstrated feeding behavior even in the absence of food,which suggests that neuronal activation can replace food as a stimulus for feeding behavior.These findings indicate that these Gal4-labeled neurons,which function downstream of sensory neurons and regulate feeding behavior towards different food sources is necessary in Drosophila feeding control.
