Association between EGF +61A/G polymorphism and gastric cancer in Caucasians

AIm: To investigate the association between epidermal growth factor (EGF) +61A/G polymorphism and susceptibility to gastric cancer, through a cross-sectional study. mETHODS: Polymerase chain reaction resctriction fragment lenght polymorphism analyses were used to genotype EGF +61 in 207 patients with gastric lesions (162 patients with gastric adenocarcinomas, 45 with atrophy or intestinal metaplasia) and 984 controls. All subjects were Caucasian. RESULTS: Genotype distribution was 23.5% for GG and 76.5% for GA/AA in the control group, 18.4% for GG and 68.6% for GA/AA in the entire group with gastric lesions and 17.9% for GG and 82.1% for GA/AA in the group with gastric adenocarcinoma. No statistically significant associations were found between EGF +61 variants and risk for developing gastric cancer [odds ratios (OR) = 1.41, 95% confidence intervals (CI): 0.90-2.21, P = 0.116]. However, the stratification of individuals by gender revealed that males carrying A alleles (EGF +61A/G or AA) had an increased risk for developing gastric cancer as compared to GG homozygous males (OR = 1.55, 95% CI: 1.05-2.28, P = 0.021). CONCLUSION: In summary, we found that males who were A carriers for EGF +61 had an increased risk for developing gastric cancer. This result may be explained by the suggestion that women secrete less gastric acid than men.

Two-Dimensional multi-Domain Hybrid Spectral-WENO methods for Conservation Laws

The multi-domain hybrid Spectral-WENO method(Hybrid)is introduced for the numerical solution of two-dimensional nonlinear hyperbolic systems in a Cartesian physical domain which is partitioned into a grid of rectangular *** main idea of the Hybrid scheme is to conjugate the spectral and WENO methods for solving problems with shock or high gradients such that the scheme adapts its solver spatially and temporally depending on the smoothness of the solution in a given *** as a multi-domain method,an adaptive algorithm is used to keep the solutions parts exhibiting high gradients and discontinuities always inside WENO subdomains while the smooth parts of the solution are kept inside spectral ones,avoiding oscillations related to the well-known Gibbs phenomenon and increasing the numerical efficiency of the overall scheme.A higher order version of the multi-resolution analysis proposed by Harten is used to determine the smoothness of the solution in each *** also discuss interface conditions for the two-dimensional problem and the switching procedure between WENO and spectral *** Hybrid method is applied to the two-dimensional Shock-Vortex Interaction and the Richtmyer-meshkov Instability(RmI)problems.

Natural history of a randomized trial comparing distal spleno-renal shunt with endoscopic sclerotherapy in the prevention of variceal rebleeding:A lesson from the past

AIm: To compare endoscopic sclerotherapy (ES) with distal splenorenal shunt (DSRS) in the prevention of recurrent variceal bleeding in cirrhotic patients during a long-term follow-up period. mETHODS: In 1984 we started a prospective, controlled study of patients with liver cirrhosis. Long-term follow-up presents a natural history of liver cirrhosis complicated by advanced portal hypertension. In this study the effects of 2 types of treatment, DSRS or ES, were evaluated. The study population included 80 patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension referred to our department from October 1984 to march 1991. These patients were drawn from a pool of 282 patients who underwent either elective surgery or ES during the same period of time. Patients were assigned to one of the 2 groups according to a random number table: 40 to DSRS and 40 to ES using polidocanol. RESULTS: During the postoperative period, no DSRS patient died, while one ES patient died of uncontrolled hemorrhage. One DSRS patient had mild recurrent variceal hemorrhage despite an angiographically patent DSRS and another patient suffered duodenal ulcer rebleeding. Eight ES patients suffered at least one episode of gastrointestinal bleeding: 4 from varices and 4 from esophageal ulcerations. Eight ES patients developed transitory dysphagia. Long-term follow- up was completed in all patients except for 5 cases (2 DSRS and 3 ES patients). Five-year survival rates for shunt (73%) and ES (56%) groups were statistically different: in this follow-up period and in subsequent follow-ups this difference decreased and ceased to be of statistical relevance. The primary cause of deathbecame hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Four DSRS patients rebled due to duodenal ulcer, while eleven ES patients had recurrent bleeding from esophago-gastric sources (seven from varices, three from hypertensive gastropathy, one from esophageal ulcerations) and two from unknown sources. Valorization of the agro-industrial by-products of bacupari(Garcinia brasiliensis(mart.))through production of flour with bioactive properties

Brazil has a wide variety of fruits that remain insufficiently *** encourage the use of one such fruit,the bacupari((Garcinia brasiliensis(mart.)),the current study produced flours from its by-products(the peel and seed)at two maturation stages and subsequently evaluated their proximate composition,physical,antioxidant,bioactive,microstructural and thermal *** results revealed that the flours have a high in fiber content(>15%)and are a potential source of protein(>5%).Seed flour has an energy value similar to that of wheat flour and other conventional *** flour micrographs indicate the presence of starch,a fact confirmed by viscosity *** flours contain phenolic compounds and exhibit antioxidant activity,especially the unripe peel *** the compounds identified by chromatography,those present in the greatest concentrations were quinine(≅111μg/g),p-coumaric acid(≅25μg/g),m-coumaric acid(≅15μg/g),and formononetin(≅21μg/g),all of which are known to have several human health *** flour crystallinity diminished as the fruit *** flour exhibited similar thermal transitions but less thermal stability than seed *** summary,this study revealed that flours produced from the peel and seeds of bacupari,which are generated in large quantities as agro-industrial by-products,can be used as alternative ingredients in various sectors of the food industry.

Due to the researchers’pursuit for bioactive compounds to perform biological activities beneficial for human health,many plants species have been ***,loquat(Eriobotrya japonica),a subtropical plant originated in south-central China and is nowadays cultivated in more than 30 countries across the globe is drawing ***,its leaves and branches are processed into important pharmaceuticals while its fruit(pulp and peel)still remain insufficiently exploited being consumed mainly in *** aim of this work is to conduct a bibliometric survey throughout the Web of Science©(WOS)main Collection and Dimensions database to highlight and correlate the research that has been carried out on this *** goals are to discover the extent of the research that has already been conducted,from which fields of knowledge the research has been approached,and understand the study trends that point toward future applications in the food *** the data obtained by the up-to-date bibliometric analysis was possible to verify that the plant has been well explored in the medicinal,chemical,and pharmaceutical sector,while the fruit,especially their seed and their starch has been highlighted in the medicinal field or food science but with no extensive industrial *** 112 papers were published regarding the loquat seeds and only 4 studied their by-products which are rich in bioactive compounds and therefore have great potential for food applications.

Competition among rare earth elements on sorption onto six seaweeds

Sorption has been proposed as a promising approach towards a sustainable water decontamination and recently to the recycling of rare earth elements(REE).Although living seaweed have been shown to be capable of removing REE from contaminated solutions,no studies have yet compared the effects of REE competition on sorption onto different groups of *** effects were analysed in the present study by exposing six living seaweeds(Ulva lactuca,Ulva intestinalis,Fucus spiralis,Fucus vesiculosus,Gracilaria *** Osmundea pinnatifida)(3 g/L,fresh weight) to mono-element and multi-element solutions of Y,La,Ce,Pr,Nd,Eu,Gd,Tb and Dy(1 μmol/L).Results show a preference towards light REE in mono-element solutions,which is reduced when in competition with other *** competitive effect is less pronounced in heavy REE indicating that these are still able to bind to the macroalgae despite the presence of competing *** to water content(%),seaweed specific surface area(cm^(2)/g) shows to be an important factor in the sorption of REE,since larger surface area is associated with higher removal and larger competitive effect.
