Evaluation by ICP-MS of Essential, Nonessential and Toxic Elements in Brazilian Fish and Seafood Samples

Fish is considered one of the healthiest foods due to the high levels of several important cardioprotective compounds such as long chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E. However, due to widespread environmental pollution, high levels of contaminants may also be present in fish and seafood samples, which may counteract the beneficial effects of consumption of this food. With this in mind, the aims of this study were: 1) to examine both toxic and essential chemical elements in seafood and river and sea fish samples sold in different Brazilian regions by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS);2) to estimate the daily intake of these chemical elements by Brazilians. The toxic elements Ba, Cd, Pb, Sr, V and Sb were found in higher concentrations in seafood than in either sea or river fish, while As concentrations were higher in both seafood and sea fish than in river fish. On the other hand, Hg levels were higher in river and sea fish. Concentrations of the essential chemical elements Co, Mn, Cu, Fe, Mg, Zn and Mo were significantly higher in seafood compared with both sorts of fish except for Se, whose levels were similar in seafood and sea fish. Daily intake of all chemical elements was estimated on the basis of a calculation of the amount of fish consumed by Brazilian households (mean fish and seafood consumption of 11.0 g/person/day). The amount of toxic element in fish and seafood did not represent a risk for the Brazilian people. Moreover, fish and seafood seem to be a good source of selenium.

Determination of Essential (Ca, Fe, I, K, Mo) and Toxic Elements (Hg, Pb) in Brazilian Rice Grains and Estimation of Reference Daily Intake

The levels of Hg and Pb (toxic elements) and Ca, Fe, I, K, Mo (essential elements) were measured in 44 Brazilian rice samples divided among white polished (W), parboiled white (PW) and parboiled brown (PB). Rice grains were ana- lyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Concentrations of toxic elements varied from 0.3 to 13.4 and 0.4 to 14.5 ng?g–1 for Hg and Pb, respectively. The values for essential elements were in the same range of those for rice produced in other countries. In general parboiled samples presented higher levels of all elements in study compared to white samples. The Estimated Daily Intake through rice consumption was 0.44 μg for Pb, 0.22 μg for Hg, 0.65 μg for I, 39.5 μg for Mo, 0.43 mg for Fe, 4.1 mg for Ca and 88.9 mg for K. Our findings demonstrated that rice can contribute significantly to the RDIs of molybdenum and potassium, but it can not be considered an important source of I, Fe and Ca. Moreover, the estimated

Litter removal impacts on soil biodiversity and eucalypt plantation development in the seasonal tropics

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in asymptomatic Brazilian adolescents

AIM:To evaluate the prevalence and clinical characteristics of Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) among asymptomatic Brazilian adolescents. Background: In recent years, so-called “non-ablative rejuvenation” has been carried out with the use of lasers or intense pulsed light (IPL) to stimulate collagen production by dermal fibroblasts. Intradermal infusion of CO2 stimulates fibroblasts and the synthesis of collagen and elastin, contributing to the retraction of the skin and tissue rejuvenation. Objectives: To evaluate the effects of IPL and the intradermal infusion of CO2 on fibroblast proliferation and collagen in the skin of female rats. Methods: Sixteen adult female Wistar rats were divided into two groups of eight animals. Group 1 underwent IPL and group 2 underwent intradermal CO2 infusion. There was a total of 8 weeks of treatment. We conducted a punch in each animal before any procedure (T0), another punch in the middle of treatment at 4 weeks post-procedure (T1) and a punch at the end of treatment at 8 weeks post-procedure (T2). The cells involved in inflammation, fibrosis and vascularization of the injured tissue by histopathology were analyzed. Results: There was statistically significant fibroblast proliferation and collagen proliferation noted when analyzing all 16 animals together and also when considering the two study groups separately. In both groups, the greatest proliferation of fibroblasts coincided with periods of increased collagen production. Conclusion: Both IPL and intradermal CO2 infusion stimulated fibroblast and collagen proliferation in the skin of the rats studied.

An Unusual Case of Herpes Simplex Meningitis after Inadvertent Puncture of the Subarachnoid Space

The study seeks to report the clinical evolution of a patient who suffered an inadvertent subarachnoid puncture and evolved with a herpetic viral meningitis, confirmed by cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis. Female, 48 years old, submitted to epidural anesthesia, for surgery, with median puncture, between L2-L3 and inadvertently accessed the subarachnoid space, with clear cerebrospinal fluid. The same puncture was used and the solution with 15 mg hyperbaric bupivacaine and 80 mcg morphine was administered. There was no complication during the entire surgical procedure. On the first postoperative day, she started complaining of headache and nausea, being treated with dipyrone, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and ondansetron. On the third day, she presented two episodes of seizure that ceased with the use of diazepam 10 mg. On the fifth day, the patient presented fever and seizures, which did not stop with medication, requiring sedation, orotracheal intubation and transfer to the intensive care unit. Lumbar puncture was performed for CSF analysis, which was positive for Herpes simplex type I. The patient was extubated, on the second day of hospitalization, maintained with a maintenance dose of phenytoin, sumatriptan, dipyrone, metoclopramide and acyclovir 500 mg, remaining intravenous, without presenting new seizures for 45 days, when she was discharged. After 30 days, he returned for a review consultation without making a complaint.
