Endoscopic papillary balloon dilation after sphincterotomy for difficult choledocholithiasis:A case-controlled study

Lepidopteran stem borers are the most damaging pests of maize in sub-saharan Africa. Despite the growing importance of maize in the forest zone of Democratic Republic of Congo, no data is available regarding stem borer pest species present and their relative importance. It is thus important to gather information likely to guide future research in this area. This study was undertaken to catalogue stem borer pest species identity and assess their relative infestation levels on maize. surveys were carried out in wild and cultivated habitats in Kisangani. Five species were collected on maize, i.e., sesamia calamistis Hampson （1910）, Eldana saccharina Walker （1865）, busseola fusca Fuller （1901）, Chilo sp. strand （1913）, and Mussidia nigrivenella Ragonot （1888）. In the wild habitats, Poenoma serrata Hampson, b. fusca and s. calamistis were collected on Pennisetum purpureum whereas Chilo sp. was collected on Panicum maximum. Our results suggest that P. maximum might affect the population dynamics of Chilo sp. whereas P. purpureum is expected not to influence the population dynamics of other stem borers owing to its scarcity in the interior of the forest.

Variation of the Content of Ethyl Esters in Extra Virgin Olive Oils during Their shelf Life

Fatty acids＇ ethyl and methyl esters are not natural components of edible vegetable oils and therefore should not be present in virgin olive oils. Among the quality requirements for extra virgin olive oils, the International Olive Council （IOC） Norm, 2015 review, set limits for the ethyl ester content at ≤ 435 ppm for the 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 harvests and at ≤ 30 ppm for the 2016/2017 harvest. The purpose of this paper is to：（a） determine the alkyl ester content in two extra virgin olive oils （of the Arbequina and Coratina varieties） as parameters of quality at the moment of their elaboration and to assess the length of their shelf life, over a 12 month period at room temperature; （b） determine extra virgin olive oils＇ free alcohols content as these may esterify due to the free fatty acids present during storage. After 6 months of storage, the Arbequina oil＇s ethyl ester content was 32 ppm, and the Coratina＇s was 46 ppm. As a result, the shelf life for both was only about half a year （labeling usually indicates it must be consumed ＂before 1 year＂）. However, parameters related to oxidation （peroxide index, K 232, K 270 and AK） remained within the limits set by the International Olive Council （IOC） throughout the year. In conclusion： ethyl ester content is a very fine parameter for assessing the quality of extra virgin in an olive oil and determining the length of its shelf life.

PillCam COLON 2~ in Crohn's disease:A new concept of pan-enteric mucosal healing assessment

AIM: To evaluate mucosal healing in patients with small bowel plus colonic Crohn's disease(CD) with a single non-invasive examination, by using PillCam COLON 2.(PCC2).METHODs: Patients with non-stricturing nonpenetrating small bowel plus colonic CD in sustained corticosteroid-free remission were included. At diagnosis,patients had undergone ileocolonoscopy to identify active CD lesions, such as ulcers and erosions, and small bowel capsule endoscopy to assess the Lewis score(Ls). After ≥ 1 year of follow-up, patients underwent entire gastrointestinal tract evaluation with PCC2. The primary endpoint was assessment of CD mucosal healing, defined as no active colonic CD lesions and Ls s were included(7 male;mean age: 32 years), and mean follow-up was 38 *** majority of patients(83.3%) received immunosuppressive therapy. Three patients(25%) achieved mucosal healing in both the small bowel and the colon,while disease activity was limited to either the small bowel or the colon in 5 patients(42%). It was possible to observe the entire gastrointestinal tract in 10 of the12 patients(83%) who underwent ***: Only three patients in sustainedcorticosteroid-free clinical remission achieved mucosal healing in both the small bowel and the colon, highlighting the limitations of clinical assessment when stratifying disease activity, and the need for pan-enteric endoscopy to guide therapeutic modification.

Despite recent progress in deep-sea biodiversity assessments in the southern Ocean （sO）, there remain gaps in our knowledge that hamper efficient deep-sea monitoring in times of rapid climate change. These include geographical sampling bias, depth and size-dependent faunal gaps in biology, ecology, distribution, and phylogeography, and the evolution of sO species. The phenomena of species patchiness and rarity are still not well understood, possibly because of our limited understanding of physiological adaptations and thresholds. Even though some shallow water species have been investigated physiologically, community-scale studies on the effects of multiple stressors related to ongoing environmental change, including temperature rise, ocean acidification, and shifts in deposition of phytoplankton, are completely unknown for deep-sea organisms. Thus, the establishment of long-term and coordinated monitoring programs, such as those rapidly growing under the umbrella of the southern Ocean Observing system （sOOs） or the Deep Ocean Observing strategy （DOOs）, may represent unique tools for measuring the status and trends of deep-sea and sO ecosystems.

Low Genetic Polymorphism at the Cytochrome C Oxidase I in silkworm strains of the brazilian Germplasm bank

Nucleotide sequences have been used to distinguish species and specimens for many years. More recently, the use of a partial sequence of 650 bp of the cytochrome c oxidase I, COI mitochondrial gene, has been proposed for species identification, known as DNA barcodes. In this work, a short sequence of the DNA barcode is described—approximately 250 bp, named as “DNA mini-barcode”—to molecularly identify different silkworm strains maintained at the unique public Germplasm bank of bombyx mori, at the Universidade Estadual de Maringá, UEM, brazil. Analysis revealed no significant differences among the silkworm strains. The phylogenetic tree obtained by the neighbor-joining method and K2P distance, in which specimens of b. mandarina were used as outgroup, clustered all the specimens of b. mori in a unique clade. Genetic variability detect within b. mori was low or nonexistent. In conclusion, the partial region of 250 bp of the mitochondrial gene COI herein analyzed may not be efficient to discriminate silkworm strains from the UEM Germplasm bank of bombyx mori.
