This work was carried out at Emb.apa. Milk cattle and experimental field were located in Coronel Pacheco, MG, b.azil, in the period of Decemb.r 2008 to May 2009. It was aimed to evaluate the effect of two different defoliation intervals on the morphology and morphogenetic characteristics of Tanzania grass (Urochloa maxima) pasture. The treatments consisted of evaluations of 2 management strategies on pastures were: 1) IL95—consisted of the entry of animals into the pickets when the pasture reached 95% of interception of photosynthetically active radiation, with 3 days of picket occupation and 2) FIXED—pasture managed with 30 days of defoliation interval and 3 days of picket occupation. Ten cows (Holstein × Zeb.) recently delivered were used to effectuate the grazer of the evaluated areas. The measured variab.es were analyzed b. the mist model. The b.st model selection was b.sed on the Akaike information criterion, in which the likelihood was evaluated for the different proposed models, where the composed symmetry had the b.tter adjustment to the model. The management caused differences on the b.omass production and on the morphological and morphogenetic structure of Tanzania grass, in which the criterion of interception of photosynthetically active radiation allowed higher efficiency on the area usage.

Tetrazolium Test to Evaluate Stizolob.um aterrimum Seeds Quality

The purpose of this study was to verify the efficiency of methods of pre-conditioning and concentrations of tetrazolium solution in the evaluation of physiological quality of Stizolob.um aterrimum seeds. Commercial seeds have passed through the process of accelerated aging for composing lots of 0, 24, 48, 96 and 144 hours, and were sub.itted to the pre-conditioning: 1) Scarification with sandpaper numb.r 100 and immersion in water at room temperature for 18 hours, 2) Immersion in water at 95°C and maintained in the same water outside the heating at 25°C for 18 hours. After preconditioning, the seed coats were removed and immersed in emb.yos tetrazolium salt at 0.25%, 0.5% and 1% for 150 minutes and maintained in the dark at 25°C for color development. To compare the results ob.ained in the tetrazolium test, we performed germination test, first counting and germination speed index. The method of scarification with sandpaper and later soaked in water for 18 hours at 25°C, the most efficient way in preconditioning of seeds of Stizolob.um aterrimum and concentration of 1.0% tetrazolium solution for 150 minutes at 25°C, allows evaluating the quality of seed lots from this species.

The current study was developed with the purpose to evaluate the germination and the vigor of Kudzu (Pueraria phaseoloides), Leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala) and Calopog?nio seeds (Calopogonium mucunoides) sub.itted to 0, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours of testing to natural (in situ incub.tion) and simulated conditions (in vitro incub.tion) from the ruminal environment of b.vines. For each period of in situ and in vitro incub.tion, in each kind of seed, the percentage of normal plants was evaluated, as well as ab.ormal plants, hard seeds, soaked seeds and dead seeds, b.sides the index of germination speed (IGS). The results were sub.itted to the Duncan test at a 5% prob.b.lity. Higher percentages of normal plants were verified in the Kudzu and in the Leucaena kinds, when the seeds were sub.itted to in situ incub.tion, as well as the IGS for the three forage species. The Calopog?nio seeds did not turn out to b. susceptib.e of use in the in situ and in vitro incub.tions. The in vitro incub.tion revealed to b. more harmful to the seeds of the three species used.

Pernicious anemia: New insights from a gastroenterological point of view

Pernicious anemia （PA） is a macrocytic anemia that is caused b. vitamin b.2 deficiency, as a result of intrinsic factor deficiency. PA is associated with atrophic b.dy gastritis （Ab.）, whose diagnosis is b.sed on histological confirmation of gastric b.dy atrophy. Serological markers that suggest oxyntic mucosa damage are increased fasting gastrin and decreased pepsinogen I. Without performing Schilling＇s test, intrinsic factor deficiency may not b. proven, and intrinsic factor and parietal cell antib.dies are use- ful surrogate markers of PA, with 73% sensitivity and 100% specificity. PA is mainly considered a disease of the elderly, b.t younger patients represent ab.ut 15% of patients. PA patients may seek medical advice due to symptoms related to anemia, such as weak-ness and asthenia. Less commonly, the disease is suspected to b. caused b. dyspepsia. PA is frequently associated with autoimmune thyroid disease （40%） and other autoimmune disorders, such as diab.tes mellitus （10%）, as part of the autoimmune polyen-docrine syndrome. PA is the end-stage of Ab.. Long- standing Helicob.cter pylori infection prob.b.y plays a role in many patients with PA, in whom the active infectious process has b.en gradually replaced b. an autoimmune disease that terminates in a b.rned-out infection and the irreversib.e destruction of the gastric b.dy mucosa. Human leucocyte antigen-DR genotypes suggest a role for genetic susceptib.lity in PA. PA patients should b. managed b. cob.lamin replacement treatment and monitoring for onset of iron deficiency. Moreover, they should b. advised ab.ut possib.e gastrointestinal long-term consequences, such as gastric cancer and carcinoids.

Evaluation of Storage Potential of <i>Jatropha curcas</i>L. Seeds

Ensuring the physiological quality of the seeds depends on storage conditions. Since their quality cannot b. improved, good conditions during this period will contrib.te on keeping them viab.e for a longer time, delaying the deterioration process. In the present study, the effect of five storage periods in a refrigerated chamb.r at 15℃± 1℃, on the seeds viab.lity during 30, 60, 90, 150 and 240 days of storage in glass containers was evaluated. Four replicates of twenty-five seeds per treatment were used and the data were compared b. regression equation. It verified that, regardless of the storage time, the seeds when sub.itted to the drying temperature of 35℃and 40℃showed a significant linear reduction of germination, GSI and seed vigor after storage.

Elesclomol (ELC) is an anticancer drug inducing mitochondria cytotoxicity through reactive oxygen ***,for the first time,we encapsulate the poorly water solub.e ELC in monoolein-b.sed cub.somes stab.lized with Pluronic *** uptake and nanocarrier accumulation close to the mitochondria with sub.micrometer distance is identified via three-dimensional (3D) confocal microscopy and edge-to-edge compartment *** monitor the therapeutic effect of the ELC nanocarrier,we apply for the first time,lab.l-free time-lapse multi-photon fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (MP-FLIM) to track NAD(P)H cofactors with sub.cellular resolution on live cells exposed to an anticancer *** in vitro cytotoxicity is verified when loading the pre-complexed ELC with copper (ELC-Cu).Importantly,for equivalent copper concentration,cub.somes loaded with ELC-Cu show higher cytotoxicity compared to the free *** novel nanocarrier shows promising features for systemic ELC-Cu administration,and furthermore we estab.ish the MP-FLIM technique for the assessment of anticancer drug delivery systems.

We evaluated the fermentation products, the gaseous and effluent losses of sugarcane silages without calcium oxide (CaO) or with CaO addition, at the levels of zero, 0.8%, 1.6% and 2.4%, in association with the microb.al additive Lactob.cillus b.chneri inoculated at the levels of zero, 50.000, 100.000 e 150.000 ufc/g of sugarcane, wet b.ses. The variety Rb.55536, harvested after 12 months of first growth was used. The experiment design was the completely randomized design, in a 4 × 4 factorial arrangement. They were evaluated in the silages, the contents of volatile fatty acids, lactic acid, ethanol, and the pH, as well as the gaseous and effluent losses. In the analysis of the data, the SAS system was utilized. It was ob.erved on interaction effect of the chemical and microb.al additive over the contents of lactic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid, b.tyric acid, ethanol and over the gaseous and effluents losses. However, there was no interaction effect regarding to pH. When it was ob.erved on interaction effect of additives, the effects of the levels of one additive were evaluated b. regression analysis in each level of each other, and vice-versa. The level 1.6% of CaO associated to the level 50,000 ufc/g of natural matter of Lactob.cillus b.chneri provided adequate levels of lactic acid (superior to 4.5%), and of acetic acid (around 1%), moderate content of propionic acid (0.55%), low content of b.tyric acid (0.05%) and controlled the production of ethanol and the gaseous and effluent losses. The pH of the silages were influenced b. CaO addition, b.t were not affected consistently b. microb.al inoculation.

A conditioned level-set method with b.ock-division strategy to flame front extraction b.sed on OH-PLIF measurements

A novel approach to extract flame fronts, which is called the conditioned level-set method with b.ock division （CLSb., has b.en developed. b.sed on a two-phase level-set formulation, the conditioned initialization and region-lock optimiza-tion appear to b. b.neficial to improve the efficiency and accuracy of the flame contour identification. The original b.ock- division strategy enab.es the approach to b. unsupervised b. calculating local self-adaptive threshold values autonomously b.fore b.narization. The CLSb.approach has b.en applied to deal with a large set of experimental data involving swirl- stab.lized premixed comb.stion in diluted regimes operating at atmospheric pressures. The OH-PLIF measurements have b.en carried out in this framework. The resulting images are, thus, featured b. lower signal-to-noise ratios （SNRs） than the ideal image; relatively complex flame structures lead to significant non-uniformity in the OH signal intensity; and, the mag- nitude of the maximum OH gradient ob.erved along the flame front can also vary depending on flow or local stoichiometry. Compared with other conventional edge detection operators, the CLSb.method demonstrates a good ab.lity to deal with the OH-PLIF images at low SNR and with the presence of a multiple scales of b.th OH intensity and OH gradient. The rob.stness to noise sensitivity and intensity inhomogeneity has b.en evaluated throughout a range of experimental images of diluted flames, as well as against a circle test as Ground Truth （GT）.
