Dif.erent approaches were assessed in the development of.a bioassay method that would provide data necessary to evaluate resistance of.apple genotypes to the obliquebanded leaf.oller (OBLR) Choristoneura rosaceana (Harris). A leaf.disc method used to evaluate the impact of.pesticides on leaf.ollers resulted in high levels of.leaf.abandonment of.f.rst and second instar larvae. Inserting leaf.petioles into water soaked Oasis f.am resulted in a signif.cant reduction in overall leaf.weight and diminished the appearance of.leaf.quality. When leaf.petioles were inserted into water-f.lled Eppendorf.vials, leaf.weight increased and overall leaf.quality appeared to be good. We opted to adopt this latter whole-leaf.bioassay method, which though very time consuming, provided a robust assessment of.OBLR lif. history parameters against dif.erent apple genotypes. Across all apple genotypes evaluated, male larvae developed f.ster than f.males to pupation as well as to adulthood, while f.males developed f.ster as pupae and were heavier than male pupae. OBLR larvae reared on leaves f.om dif.erent apple genotypes displayed signif.cant variability in development time, pupal weight, larval survivorship, and number of.of.spring produced. We utilized three indices to characterize host acceptance, sub-lethal ef.ects, and lethal ef.ects of.OBLR to apple genotypes. Our results indicated that ‘Lady’, ‘Viking’, and ‘Northern Spy’ show some of.the highest levels of.resistance against OBLR, while ‘Granny Smith’ was quite susceptible to OBLR and could be used in f.ture studies identif.ing apple genotypes with relative resistance to OBLR.

Cuticular hydrocarbons in two parapatric species of.ants and their hybrid

Due to increasing prices f.r wood f.els the utilisation of.new biomass f.els has become a topic of.strong interest f.r biomass combustion systems. In this study, thermal degradation of.several types of.biomass such as conventional wood biomass（spruce）, short rotation coppice（willow and poplar） as well as herbaceous and agricultural biomass（Arundo donax, miscanthus, wheat straw, olive stones and maize husks） were investigated by means of.thermogravimetric analysis. Analysis of.the devolatilisation characteristics were quantif.ed in order to compare new f.els with conventional wood biomass. The thermal degradation of.short rotation coppice, herbaceous and agricultural biomass f.els occurred at lower temperatures than that obtained f.r conventional wood f.els. f.rthermore, the thermal decomposition of.the samples investigateded was successf.lly modeled by three f.rst-order independent parallel reactions corresponding to the degradation of.three pseudocomponents linked to hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin. Through the model simulation, the diversity in mass f.actions and kinetic parameters of.three pseudo components was analysed. Except f.r maize husks where hemicellulose represents the largest f.action, f.r all other samples tested cellulose showed the highest mass f.action f.llowed by hemicellulose and lignin. f.r all samples the highest activation energy was f.und f.r cellulose and the lowest one f.r lignin decomposition.

Porous polymers have been recently recog- nized as one of.the most important precursors f.r f.brication of.heteroatom-doped porous carbons due to the intrinsic porous structure, easy available heteroatom- containing monomers and versatile polymerization meth- ods. However, the heteroatom elements in as-produced porous carbons are quite relied on monomers. So f.r, the manipulating of.heteroatom in porous polymer derived porous carbons are still very rare and challenge. In this work, a sulf.r-enriched porous polymer, which was prepared f.om a diacetylene-linked porous polymer, was used as precursor to prepare S-doped and/or N-doped porous carbons under nitrogen and/or ammonia atmo- spheres. Remarkably, S content can sharply decrease f.om 36.3% to 0.05% af.er ammonia treatment. The N content and specif.c surf.ce area of.as-f.bricated porous carbons can reach up to 1.32% and 1508 m^2·g^-1, respectively. As the electrode materials f.r electrical double-layer capacitors, as-f.bricated porous carbons exhibit high specif.c capacitance of.up to 431.6 f.g^-1 at 5 mW·s^-1 and excellent cycling stability of.99.74% capacitance retention af.er 3000 cycles at 100 mV·s^-1. f.rthermore, as the electro- chemical catalysts f.r oxygen reduction reaction, as- f.bricated porous carbons presented ultralow half.wave- potential of.0.78 V versus RHE. This work not only of.ers a new strategy f.r manipulating S and N doping f.atures f.r the porous carbons derived f.om S-containing porous polymers, but also paves the way f.r the structure- perf.rmance interrelationship study of.heteroatoms co- doped porous carbon f.r energy applications.

The paper deals with the complex ref.active index and photoluminescence in the IR-VIS light region of.two sample types （i） black p-type silicon （BSi） produced by the surf.ce structure chemical transf.r method using Pt catalytic mesh, and （ii） porous p-type silicon prepared by standard electrochemical etching. We present, compare, and discuss the values of.the IR-VIS complex ref.active index obtained by calculation using the Kramers-Kronig transf.rmation and the photoluminescence properties thereof. The results indicate that dif.erences between the optical properties of.the BSi and the porous Si are given by （a） the oxidation procedure of.BSi, （b） the thickness of.the f.rmed black and porous Si layer, and by （c） the porosity of.both layer types. We assume that the photoluminescence signal generated by oxidized BSi structures can be mainly related to the quantum conf.nement ef.ect, while the photoluminescence of.the porous p-type Si is caused by the optical activity of.the SiOxHy compounds covering its surf.ce region.

Numerous Trichoderma spp. are mycoparasites and commercially applied as biological control agents against a large number of.plant pathogenic f.ngi. The mycoparasitic interaction is host-specif.c and several research strategies have been applied to identif. the main genes and compounds involved in the antagonist-plant-pathogen three-way interaction. During mycoparasitism, signals f.om the host f.ngus are recognised by Trichoderma, stimulating antif.ngal activities that are accompanied by morphological changes and the secretion of.hydrolytic enzymes and antibiotics. Interestingly some morphological changes appeared highly conserved in the strategy of.pathogenicity within the f.ngal world, i.e. the f.rmation of.appressoria as well as the secretion of.hydrolytic enzymes seem to be general mechanisms of.attack both f.r plant pathogens and mycoparasitic antagonists. This knowledge is being used to identif. receptors and key components of.signalling pathways involved in f.ngus-f.ngus interaction. f.r this purpose we have cloned the f.rst genes (tmk1, tga1, tga3) f.om T. atroviride showing a high similarity to MAP kinase and G protein subunits (see abstract by Zeilinger et al.), which have been f.und to have an important role in pathogenicity by Magnaporthe grisea. To identif. the f.nction and involvement of.these f.ctors in mycoparasitism by T. atroviride, tmk1, tga1, tga3 disruptant strains were produced. The knock-out mutants were tested by in vivo biocontrol assays f.r their ability to inhibit soil and f.liar plant pathogens such as Rhizoctonia solani, Pythium ultimum and Botrytis cinerea . Disruption of.these genes corresponded to a complete loss of.biocontrol ability, suggesting a signif.cant role in mycoparasitism. In particular, it has been suggested that tga3 regulates the expression of.chitinase-encoding genes, the secretion of.the corresponding enzymes and the process of.conidiation. Comparative proteome analysis of.wild type and disruptants supported this hypoth
