Influence of Concentrate in the Diet on the Metabolic, Biochemical, and Endocrine Profile of Buffalo Heifers

The objective of this study was to evaluate the profile of the main serum biochemical variables in buffalo heifers receiving diets with different concentrations of concentrate. Twenty buffalo heifers of the Murrah breed, aged six to eight months, were randomly assigned to four groups, with five replicates each, to be adapted to levels of 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80% of concentrate in the diet, composed of sugarcane (bulk) and concentrated feed based on wheat, corn, and soybean meal. The experimental diets were constituted in the proportion “bulk: concentrate”, based on dry matter, of “80:20” (Treatment 1), “60:40” (Treatment 2), “40:60” (Treatment 3), and “20:80” (Treatment 4). Biomarkers were evaluated for energy, protein, mineral, and endocrine profiles, as well as enzymatic activity. A positive linear effect was observed for Final Body Weight. In the energy profile, there was a positive linear effect for total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol and a quadratic effect for plasma glucose. In the protein profile, a quadratic effect was observed for the urea: creatinine ratio and a positive linear effect for total protein and albumin. For the enzymatic activity, only the variable gamma-glutamyltransferase presented a quadratic effect. In the mineral profile, a quadratic effect was observed for calcium levels and a positive linear effect for phosphorus levels and negative for chlorine levels. In the endocrine profile, no statistical differences were observed. Diet with until 80% of concentrate does not negatively influence biochemical parameters that represent the profile of energy, protein, mineral and thyroid hormones for growing buffalo heifers and favors the performance of the animals.

Dental Post Based on Epoxy Resin/Zirconium Phosphate Composite Aiming Prosthetic Dentistry

The aim of this research was to develop an intrarradicular dental post based on epoxy resin/nano zirconium phosphate composite with potential appli-cation in prosthetic dentistry. Zirconium phosphate (ZrP) nanoparticle was synthesized by a reaction between phosphoric acid (H3PO4) and zirconium (IV) oxide chloride 8-hydrate (ZrOCl2·8H2O) and applied as filler. Commer-cial epoxy resin and hardener were used as polymer matrix. The composites were prepared at different proportions of epoxy resin/hardener, filler amount, reaction time and temperature. Infrared revealed that degree of conversion decreased with amount of ZrP. Insoluble matter was upper than 97%. Thermogravimetry indicated two steps of degradation. The best values of flexural modulus and flexural strength were achieved for the post desig-nated as 1:0.25:0.25. Laser scanning confocal microscopy suggested that the morphology of the posts fractured surface varied according to epoxy-resin:hardener ratio and the ZrP amount. From atomic force micros-copy, the topographic view exposed the shape and size of ZrP particles. Field emission scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy indicated good adhesion between epoxy resin matrix-ZrP and that the pres-ence of phosphate rendered brittle the fracture surface.

The Psychological Impact on the Emergency Crews after the Disaster Event on February 20, 2010

The scope of this article is to screen thesymptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder （PTSD） among the professionals of health and public safety securi~ who providedhumanitarian aid fbr the population of Madeira after the 2010 alluvium. It involves a cross-sectional study. The list of life events （LAV） and theperi-traumaticexperiences questionnaire （PTSB）--adult versionwere used for screening *** participants included 405 professionalson the emergency crews （mean age = 34.51）. Most are male （83.5%） and was in his residence （52.8%） at the time of the *** results showed that there are significant differences between the profession and the response to the event （P 〈 0.001）, as well as in relation to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder （PTSD）, being most evident in the group of firemen and military （P 〈 0.001） of developing ***, the mental health care of the professionals should suggest the vital need for specific training and the prevention of psychological disorders.

We report the preparation of poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene)(PEDOT)-modified polyvinylidene fluoride electrospun fibers and their use as a novel adsorbent material for the removal of the anionic dye Methyl Orange(MO)from aqueous *** novel adsorbent material can be used to selectively remove MO on a wide p H range(3.0-10.0),with a maximum capacity of 143.8 mg/g at p H *** used in a recirculating filtration system,the maximum absorption capacity was reached in a shorter time(20 min)than that observed for batch mode experiments(360 min).Based on the analyses of the kinetics and adsorption isotherm data,one can conclude that the predominant mechanism of interaction between the membrane and the dissolved dye molecules is ***,considering the estimated values for the Gibbs energy,and entropy and enthalpy changes,it was established that the adsorption process is spontaneous and occurs in an endothermic *** good mechanical and environmental stability of these membranes allowed their use in at least 20 consecutive adsorption/desorption cycles,without significant loss of their *** suggest that the physical-chemical characteristics of PEDOT make these hybrid mats a promising adsorbent material for use in water remediation protocols and effluent treatment systems.

Pain and Fatigue Perceptions of Patients with Systemic Autoimmune Myopathies before and during the COVID-19 Pandemic Period

Objective: To assess general pain and fatigue and their association with the disease status of patients with systemic autoimmune myopathies (SAMs), in terms of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on these parameters. Methods: This is a cross-sectional and prospective cohort study that included 72 patients with SAMs who were matched by age and gender with 67 healthy individuals. The patients engaged in an interview via a validity survey to measure disease status, and assess a visual analog scale (VAS) for pain and fatigue in two periods: before (phase I) and during (phase II) of the Brazilian COVID-19 pandemic. For cross-sectional analysis, patients’ data from phase I were compared to healthy individuals’ information, whereas for prospective analysis, data of the patients who were assessed in phase II were compared to the same patients’ data from phase I. Results: The patients had significantly more pain perception, comparable fatigue perception and fatigue severity, when compared to the healthy individuals. During the COVID-19 pandemic period, the disease activity, pain and fatigue perceptions, and fatigue severity remained unchanged. Despite this, the pain and fatigue perceptions correlated significantly with patients’ VAS, the patient health outcome, and fatigue severity. In addition, the pain perception correlated to creatine phosphokinase, whereas fatigue perceptions correlated to physicians' VAS. Conclusions: The study showed that patients with SAMs have significantly increased pain perceptions compared to healthy individuals. During the COVID-19 pandemic period, the pain and fatigue perceptions remained unchanged in patients with SAMs but they correlated to several disease status parameters.

The Ethics and the Meaning of Life among College Students

The concern of the ethics and the meaning of life in young adults became universal and are present in all contexts of human life. Such universality is due to the development of modern rationality, to establish a relationship between the intrinsic theoretical dimensions (scientific) and practical dimensions (ethical), originated that are present in the own array of knowledge. This descriptive cross-sectional study, aims to identify the values of the ethical dimension and meaning of life defended by the college students of the Universities of Madeira, Portugal and Fortaleza, Brazil. The sample consists of 605 University students (Madeira = 225 and Fortaleza = 380), with an average age of 21 years and a standard deviation of 2. We used the questionnaire on values (adapted from the European Values Survey). Most of the young people referred to have a religion (60% wood and 78.4% stronghold), being the most Catholic, however, present in your frequency disinterest and, yet, in Brazil there is a greater diversity of religions. Supporting the intervention of religious institutions in situations of everyday life is accepted mostly by Brazilians, with the exception of politics (35.5%). On the other hand, the university students of the University of Madeira understand that Religious Institutions should only give their opinion on racial discrimination (76.6%). Believe in God (90.8% and 55.1% Stronghold) and Soul (80.3% and 66.4% Stronghold) are beliefs more referred to by college students. These results are intended to contribute in the field of research on ethical values and meaning of life in young people. This study contributes to future comparative research among university students and to developing strategic programs in education and health, increasing the success and excellence in the formation of a full citizenship, preventing the fanaticisms and the social discrimination that today devastate the collective globally.

Background:Leishmaniasis causes alterations and lesions in the genital system,which leads to azoospermia and testicular atrophy in animals during the chronic phase of the *** aim of this study was to reveal the kinetics of Leishmania chagasi infection in the genital system of male golden hamsters(Mesocricetus auratus).Methods:Animals were intraperitoneally inoculated with amastigotes from *** different time points animals were euthanized and genital organs processed for histo-pathological,qPCR,cytokines and testosterone detection ***:Our results showed a high parasite load in testis,followed by an increase of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL1-β,TNF-αand IFN-γ,and ***,IL-4 expression was upregulated and basal parasite persistence in testis was observed using the experimental ***:Extracellular amastigotes migrated to the epididymis posing as a potential major factor of parasite persistence and venereal transmission of *** infection in hamsters.

Hypertension Associated with Atherosclerosis Risk Factors in Patients of Family Health Strategy Highlighting the Framingham Risk Score

The Systemic Arterial Hypertension (SAH) stands out among the chronic non-transmissible pathologies that impact the cause and/or aggravation of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) on a global level, as the disease is an underestimated disorder due to non-perceptive symptoms and associated with factors and risk markers of another CVD. Therefore, establishing the risk of progression and aggravation of the SAH, according the Framingham Risk Score (FRS), allows to reducing morbidity and improving preventative measures for DCVs. This observational and transversal study approaches the data collection of patient records at the Health Family Strategy of Senhor do Bonfim, BA, which established differences by descriptive and inferential statistical analysis (correlation and regression). The aspects of hypertension associated with risk factors for atherosclerosis were analyzed, determining the risk of developing cardiovascular events in 10 years by FRS. From 432 families, 746 patients were selected, of which 340 are hypertensive individuals (SAH = 45.57%) and 406 (NSAH = 54.42%) non-hypertensives. Among the SAH the majority (31.17%) was in the age range of 63 - 77, but, in both groups, women were in stronger number. There was greater prevalence in SAH for all the characteristics analyzed, smoking (13.20%), sedentary (29.41%) and cardiovascular accident (22.60%). The SAH group is more susceptive to the CVD progress in 10 years by FRS (P < 0.0001 ANOVA). In the NSAH group, there were significant associations among all the variables analyzed as was expected, without differences between the linear correlation and regression, indicating the physio-metabolic equilibrium of the factors and markers evaluated by FRS. Already in SAH group, despite the correlations have been significant too, the regression analysis revealed that only Total Cholesterol (P = 0.0086);LDL (P < 0.0001), Glucose (P < 0.0006) and Age (P < 0.0001) have significative association with FRS. Tributyrin in the Diet of Lambs and Its Impacts on Energy Metabolism and Oxidative Status in the Liver and Intestine, as Well as the Fatty Acid Profile in Meat

This study aimed to determine whether adding tributyrin to the diet of lambs impacts health, energy metabolism, ruminal environment, and meat quality. Twelve lambs were used;the control group received a basal diet, while the tributyrin group received a diet with the additive mixed with concentrate (2 g/day/animal). The blood count was used for Leukocyte and lymphocyte counts, which were significantly higher in tributyrin-fed animals than in controls. The activity of the enzymes adenylate kinase and pyruvate kinase was higher in the liver and intestine of the tributyrin group than the controls;cytosolic creatine kinase activity was significantly higher in the intestine of lambs fed tributyrin. Glutathione S-transferase activity in the liver was significantly higher in animals in the tributyrin group. Superoxide dismutase activity was significantly higher in the intestine, with a lower protein carbonyl concentration in the tributyrin group. Bacterial activity through ruminal fluid collection was significantly lower when tributyrin was consumed, unlike the protozoan count, which was significantly higher in animals in the tributyrin group than in the controls. Tributyrin intake caused lower levels of short-chain fatty acids without changing the proportion of volatile fatty acids. The water retention capacity measured using an external compression method was significantly higher in the meat of the tributyrin group. The treatment affected some fatty acids in the meat, these acids were separated by chromatography where a lower amount of saturated fatty acids and a higher amount of monounsaturated fatty acids in the group that consumed tributyrin. These findings suggest that tributyrin in lamb diet alters blood and rumen environment biomarkers and improves the fatty acid profile of the meat.
