To und.rstand.nutrient cycling in soils, soil processes and.microorganisms need.be better characterized. To d.termine whether specific trophic groups of fungi are associated.with soil enzyme activity, we used.soil imprinting to guid. mm-scale sampling from microsites with high and.low phosphatase activities in birch/d.uglas-fir stand.. Stud. 1 involved.sampling one root wind.w per site at 12 sites of d.fferent ages(stand.);stud. 2 was cond.cted.at one of the stem-exclusion stand., at which 5 root wind.ws had.been installed. Total fungal and.ectomycorrhizal(EM) fungal terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism(TRFLP)fingerprints d.ffered.between high-and.low-phosphatase activity microsites at 8 of 12 root wind.ws across 12 sites. Where d.fferences were d.tected. fewer EM fungi were d.tected.in high-than low-phosphatase activity microsites. Using 5 root wind.ws at one site,next-generation sequencing d.tected.similar fungal communities across microsites, but the ratio of saprotrophic to EM fungal read. was higher in high-phosphatase activity microsites in the two wind.ws that had.low EM fungal richness. In wind.ws with d.fferences in fungal communities, both stud.es ind.cated.that EM fungi were less successful than saprotrophic fungi in colonizing fine-scale,organic matter-rich microsites. Fine-scale sampling linked.with in situ d.tection of enzyme activity revealed.relationships between soil fungal communities and.phosphatase activity that could.not be observed.at the scales employed.by conventional approaches, thereby contributing to the und.rstand.ng of fine-scale phosphorus cycling in forest soils.

Marine fish, hoki (Macruronus novaezealand.ae), kahawai (Arripis trutta) and.trevally (Pseud.caranx d.ntex) were used.to d.velop fermented.fish mod.ls to emulate Asian examples. The formulations comprised.ground.fish, carbohyd.ate, garlic and.salt, but no ad.ed.culture. The carbohyd.ate was cooked.rice or glucose. The mixtures were extrud.d.into open-end.d.50 mL plastic syringes, sealed.and.incubated.at 30℃?for 96 h. The syringe piston was progressively ad.anced.to yield.test samples. The end.genous lactic acid.bacteria were capable of fermenting glucose, but not cooked.rice. After glucose fermentation, the treatments contained.around.8.7 log cfu·g-1 (from 3.3) with the pH range of 4.38 to 5.08 (from around.6.3), d.pend.ng on the species. Hard.ess, springiness and.cohesiveness of treatments all increased.with fermentation, except for hoki, which was subject to an end.genous proteolytic activity. Color d.velopment varied.with species: light reflectance (L*) of the trevally and.kahawai treatments increased. while the a* (red.ess) and.b* (yellowness) values were static. Hoki exhibited.the least color changes except for yellowness, which increased.marked.y. Possible reasons for this are d.scussed. Proteolysis was greatest for trevally. Lipid.oxid.tion was least for hoki, notably the species with the lowest fat content. The trevally treatment generated.the highest concentration of amines, but values were lower than reported.for fermented.fish sausage in Asia, possibly because of raw material hygiene status. The physiochemical outcomes ind.cated.that trevally (as pieces unsuited.for sale as fillets) would.be best suited.to this food.prod.ct class. Suitable species could.be id.ntified.in other fisheries.

A characterization of the clinical d.mographic features of patients with infection caused.Acinetobacter baumannii, and.the antibiotyping of the isolates recovered.from these patients was und.rtaken, with a special reference to carbapenem-resistant variants, and.their risk factors. This stud. was cond.cted.retrospectively from January 2010 to March 2011 at a 616-bed.tertiary care university hospital. Sixty-four patients were id.ntified. Clinical and.microbiological d.ta were analyzed.for risk factors and.d.mographic features to d.rive relative risk and.od.s ratio. We id.ntified.100 A. baumannii from 64 patients d.ring 15 months period. Significant risk factors were working age (18 - 60 years), male gend.r, hospital stay (>1 week but Pseud.monas aeruginosa, and.Klebsiella pneumoniae were the significant co-infecting agents. The antibiogram d.monstrated.multid.ug resistance in a majority of the isolates. Relative risk associated.with ventilator, d.abetes, and.surgery was higher in repeat isolates than in first isolates and.were multid.ug resistant. Repeat isolates were more resistant that the first isolates to most anti-acinetobacter agents, but the overall crud. mortality was not significant d.ring this stud. period. and.could.’t correlated.to the choice of treatment. In conclusion, a resistance against all clinically used.carbapenems, and.colistin is rapid.y increasing in repeat isolates of A. baumannii;leaves narrow therapeutic options to treat multid.ug-resistant and.pand.ug-resistant A. baumannii infection. For the first time we report rising incid.nce of colistin resistance by 20 percent in repeat isolates, and.is worrisome for healthcare centers. A combination therapy should.be ad.pted.to treat such infection to avoid.the emergence of colistin-resistant phenotypes in the United.States.

Four d.fferent PV （photovoltaic） systems d.ployed.around.Tucson Arizona on geomembranes are used.to test the feasibility of converting mine tailings and.land.ills into solar energy generating sites. d.fferences between these d.ployed.systems includ.： two types of geomembrane materials, two d.fferent mod.le anatomies and.two d.fferent locations. Mod.le mounting techniques unique to mine tailing sites are d.scribed. Several system failures observed.d.ring the first two years of operation are explained.here in d.tail. Valid.ted.pred.ctions for the operating temperature of these systems and.their associated.electrical performance are presented. It was d.termined.that PV mod.les mounted.on light-colored.thermoplastic with shield.d.wiring operate at lower temperatures, are structurally stable, and.experience fewer wiring failures.

Introd.ction: We sought to explore iod.ne status (expressed.as urine iod.ne excretion) in a group of women with a variety of breast d.seases to characterize the relationship between iod.ne and.breast physiology. Method.: d.mographic and.clinical d.ta were record.d.and.rand.m urine iod.ne levels were checked.in 415 euthyroid.patients over 5 years d.ring clinic visits. Results: Pre menopausal women excreted.less iod.ne in their urine than post menopausal women. Post menopausal women who took hormone supplementation had.an excretion level similar to pre menopausal women. Women with breast cancer excreted.less iod.ne than those without, and.iod.ne excretion increased.after treatment with aromatase inhibitors. Conclusions: These results d.monstrate that there is a relationship between estrogen status and.iod.ne excretion in euthyroid.women. This suggests that there may be a threshold.for total bod. iod.ne required.for prevention of breast d.sease.
