Scalable Jet-Based Fabrication of PEI-Hydrogel Particles for CO2 Capture

The capture, regeneration, and conversion of CO2 from ambient air and flue gas streams are critical aspects of mitigating global w.rming. Solid sorbents for CO2 absorption are very promising as they have high mass transfer areas w.thout energy input and reduce emissions and minimize corrosion as compared to liquid sorbents. How.ver, precisely tunable solid CO2 sorbents are difficult to produce. Here, w. demonstrate the high-throughput production of hydrogel-based CO2-absorbing particles via liquid jetting. By w.apping a liquid jet consisting of an aqueous solution of cross-linkable branched polyethylenimine (PEI) w.th a layer of suspension containing hydrophobic silica nanoparticles, monodisperse droplets w.th a silica nanoparticle coating layer w.s formed in the air. A stable Pickering emulsion containing PEI droplets w.s obtained after these ejected droplets w.re collected in a heated oil bath. The droplets turn into mm-sized particles after thermal curing in the bath. The diameter, PEI content, and silica content of the particles w.re systematically varied, and their CO2 absorption w.s measured as a function of time. Steam regeneration of the particles enabled cyclic testing, revealing a CO2 absorption capacity of 6.5 +/- 0.5 mol kg(-1) solid PEI in pure CO2 environments and 0.7 +/- 0.3 mol kg(-1) solid PEI for direct air capture. Several thousands of particles w.re produced per second at a rate of around 0.5 kg per hour, w.th a single nozzle. This process can be further scaled by parallelization. The complete toolbox for the design, fabrication, testing, and regeneration of functional hydrogel particles provides a pow.rful route tow.rd novel solid sorbents for regenerative CO2 capture.

Microalgae have the potential of becoming an important energy source, and hydrothermal liquefaction（HTL） is a promising technology for that, producing an organic liquid energy carrier usually called ’bio?oil’ or ’bio?crude’, besides gas, aqueous and solid products. The interest in this technology for microalgae conversion has significantly increased in the last years, leading to the publication of several studies. How.ver, the know.edge produced is rather fragmentary. A detailed analysis of the available data is presented in this w.rk, bringing together all the information currently available. The conclusions of this review.w.rk w.ll be the guidelines for future experimental w.rk w.th several algae species. The intention is to assess the effect of algae strain and –properties under otherw.se identical conditions on the biocrude oil yield and composition.

Microalgae w.t extraction using N-ethyl butylamine for fatty acid production

Microalgae are considered a promising feedstock for the production of food ingredients, cosmetics, pharmaceutical products and *** energy intensity of drying and cell breaking of algae and solvent recovery afterw.rds hindered the route of algae biorefinery. In this w.rk the influences of freeze drying and cell breaking to the extraction efficiency of crude lipid yield and fatty acid yield w.re investigated. Results show.d that drying and cell breaking are not necessary for N-ethyl butylamine extraction, because good yields w.re obtained w.thout. Crude lipid yield and fatty acid yield using N-ethyl butylamine w.re comparable w.th Bligh & Dyer extraction, making N-ethyl butylamine a candidate for further development of an energy efficient lipid extraction technology for non-broken microalgae.
