How Can Practitioners Support Citizen Volunteers in Disaster Risk Reduction? Insight from “Good and Ready” in Aotearoa New Zealand

Global and national policy frameworks emphasize the importance of people's participation and volunteers' role in disaster risk reduction. While research has extensively focused on volunteers in disaster response and recovery, less attention has been paid on how organizations involved in disaster risk management can support volunteers in leading and coordinating communitybased disaster risk reduction. In 2019, the New Zealand Red Cross piloted the Good and Ready initiative in Auckland,Aotearoa New Zealand, with the objective to empower local people in resilience building with a focus on volunteers and community participation. This research examined the positive and negative outcomes of Good and Ready and investigated volunteers' experiences in the disaster resilience initiative. It involved the codesign of a questionnaire-based survey using participatory methods with Good and Ready volunteers, the dissemination of the survey to gather volunteers' viewpoints, and a focus group discussion with participatory activities with Red Cross volunteers. The findings highlight that a key challenge lies in finding a balance between a program that provides flexibility to address contextual issues and fosters communities' ownership, versus a prescriptive and standardized approach that leaves little room for creativity and self-initiative. It pinpoints that supporting volunteers with technical training is critical but that soft skills training such as coordinating, communicating,or facilitating activities at the local level are needed. It concludes that the sustainability of Good and Ready requires understanding and meeting volunteers' motivations and expectations and that enhancing partnerships with local emergency management agencies would strengthen the program.

Reedbeds are crucial breeding habitats for vulnerable songbird species.Irrespective of their protection status,these habitats may be threatened by organic matter accumulation,progressively leading to structural homoge-nization and habitat succession towards woodland.Managers prevent excessive litter build-up with various in-terventions opening-up the reedbeds,such as grazing,which may be detrimental or suitable for some reed bird species.We assessed the effects of extensive grazing by horses and its cessation in the medium and long terms on reedbed structure,and the consequences on reed-nesting songbird densities in Estagnol Nature Reserve,a pro-tected wetland near the French Mediterranean coast.We compared reedbed structural features between grazed,newly ungrazed and old-ungrazed plots.During nine years,we censused four songbird species in spring and collected water level data in the same survey plots.Grazing reduced reedbed extent,rejuvenated the vegetation with more short green stems on a thinner litter,and produced higher structural heterogeneity and discontinuity compared to long-lasting non grazing.Newly ungrazed plot showed intermediate effects.All surveyed songbird total densities were similar among plots while species numbers and densities differed.Grazed reedbed was more attractive to Moustached Warblers(Acrocephalus melanopogon)and Great Reed Warblers(Acrocephalus arundi-naceus),likely due to the large edges and the high vegetation structural heterogeneity.However,Moustached Warblers were more negatively affected by higher water level in grazed reedbed,presumably because flooding prevents litter foraging.The newly ungrazed reedbed was not preferred by any species.All warbler species were found under low density in the old-ungrazed reedbed,where Reed Buntings(Emberiza schoeniclus)were exclu-sively found.Food availability related to thick litter layer may explain this predilection.Common Reed Warblers(Acrocephalus scirpaceus)were found everywhere in similar densities.We conclude that reedbed management b

Aim:Angiogenesis is observed in acute myeloid leukemia(AML).AML cells abnormally proliferate and are resistant to death.Positive regulators of angiogenesis,VEGF-A and matrix metalloproteinases(MMPs)2 and 9 are markers of disease status in AML.The natural phloroglucinol hyperforin(HF)displays antitumoral properties of potential pharmacological interest.Herein,we investigated the effects of HF on MMP-2/9 and VEGF-A expression and survival of primary AML cells.Methods:Blood and bone marrow samples were collected in 45 patients with distinct subtypes defined by French American British classification,i.e.,M0,M1,M2,M3,M4,and M5.Levels of MMPs and VEGF-A in leukemic blood cells and culture supernatants were determined by RT-PCR,ELISA,and gelatin zymography(MMPs).The balance between cell death and survival was assessed by flow cytometry with analysis of phosphatidylserine externalization and caspase-3 activation.Results:The administration of HF promoted a caspase-associated apoptosis in primary AML blasts(from blood and bone marrow),but not normal blood cells and monocytes.In addition,HF inhibited the levels of secreted proMMP-2,proMMP-9,and VEGF-A without altering transcripts.The induction of apoptosis by HF significantly paralleled the inhibition of MMP-2/9 and VEGF-A release by HF.No differences were seen in response to the deleterious effects of HF between AML cells of distinct subtypes.Conclusion:Our results suggest that HF,through its proapoptotic and potential antiangiogenic properties(by inhibiting MMP-2/9 and VEGF-A)on primary AML cells,might be a useful experimental agent,in combination with existing drugs,for new therapeutic approaches in the treatment of this incurable disease.

Objective:Only a few numbers of studies have been published on the use of abobotulinumtoxinA(Dysport®)in idiopathic detrusor overactivity(IDO).This study reported the long-term follow-up of women with IDO who were treated with intravesical Dysport®injections.Methods:Two hundred and thirty-six patients with IDO who had failed first-line conservative and antimuscarinic therapy received 500-900 units of Dysport®between April 2014 and July 2015.All patients were followed up for 5 years after their initial injection and interviewed on the phone.Results:A total of 236 women with IDO aged from 18 years to 84 years(mean±standard deviation:49.6±15.9 years)were included in our study.The median follow-up time for patients was 36.5(range:10-70)months,and the median recovery time after injection was 18.5(range:0-70)months.A total of 83(35.2%)patients stated that they had subjective improvement of their symptoms whereas 84(35.6%)patients did not report any improvement in symptoms.The initial International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire Overactive Bladder mean score was 6.9(standard deviation 3.4).There was a positive association between the median recovery time and the components of the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire Overactive Bladder questionnaire.Conclusion:In a sub-population of overactive bladder patients with IDO who have failed first-line therapy,a single intravesical Dysport®injection can resolve patient symptoms completely or reduce the symptoms to an acceptable level that can be controlled with antimuscarinics or re-injection on demands.

First ovules integument: what roles?

The Famennian is a period of increased taxonomic diversity for the first representatives of the major plant groups,especially the spermatophytes (i.***.the seed plants) that,today,represent the most abundant and diversified plant group on Earth [1,2].Early spermatophytes evolved a unique ovule-centered reproductive syndrome that allowed them to germinate and grow rapidly in disturbed habitats and,secondarily,to colonize dry habitats unfavorable to the reproduction of their free-sporing predecessors [3,4](Fig.1).In these ovulate organisms,the female gametophyte grows and produces gametes inside the indehiscent megasporangium (nucellus) that differentiates a pollen chamber retaining the pollen grains in its apical part.An integument encloses the nucellus.Like the Runcaria protovule that preceded them by 20 million years,Famennian ovules were all surrounded by a cupule,except perhaps Spermolithus and Warsteinia [5-7].

Management of Vulnating Esophageal Foreign Bodies in Burkina Faso

Introduction: Esophageal foreign bodies (EFB) are a diagnostic and therapeutic emergency because of the serious complications they can cause. Aim: This paper aimed to study the vulnating esophageal foreign bodies in the ENT and Head and Neck Surgery departments of the Yalgado Ouedraogo and Bogodogo University Hospital. Methodology: This was an analytic cross-sectional study with retrospective data collection over 10 years (2012-2021). Results: We collected 91 cases of vulnating esophageal foreign bodies, i.e. 9.1 cases/year (4.7%). The mean age of the patients was 14 ± 19 years. The sex ratio was 1.6. The circumstances of occurrence were dominated by accidental ingestion of vulnating esophageal foreign bodies (98.9%). The average time to consultation was 7.5 hours. Dysphagia was the dominant symptom (64.8%). Cervico-thoracic radiography found dual contour radiopaque images in 71.4%. Esophagoscopy with rigid tube was performed in 97.8%. The average time for extraction of the vulnating esophageal foreign bodies was 8 hours. Vulnerating esophageal foreign bodies were non-organic in 84.6%. The button cell represented 64.8%. Their location was cervical in 61.5% intraoperatively. The lesion assessment found ulcerative lesions in 42.9% (p Conclusion: Vulnating esophageal foreign bodies are relatively frequent in our ENT practice. Although their diagnosis is often easy, their treatment is still difficult and requires multidisciplinary management. Thus, for us, prevention remains the first effective weapon.

Perturbation and delayed recovery of the reed invertebrate assemblage in Camargue marshes sprayed with Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis

Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis （Bti） is the most commonly used larvicide to control mosquitoes worldwide. Considered as nontoxic to most organisms, Bti can nevertheless cause trophic perturbations to natural communities by reducing the abundance of Chironomidae, which are a key element of wetland food webs. Since August 2006, up to 8400 of the 33 000 ha of mosquito larval biotopes in the Camargue （Rh6ne delta, in southern France）, are monitored by a public agency and Bti-sprayed （aqueous solution of VectoBac 12AS at 2.5 L/ha） whenever mosquito larvae （Ochlerotatus easpius and Oc. detritus） appeared in water bodies. This resulted in 30-50 aerial treatments/year, in addition to ground spraying of unknown frequency. The sprayed habitats include Phragmites australis reedbeds, which support a specific avifauna of conservation concern. We compared the abundance of invertebrate prey available to passerine birds at treated and control sites relative to the predicted values based on hydrology over a 9-year period. Food available to reed passerines was significantly reduced at treated areas, translating into a 34% decrease in breeding birds based on predictive modeling. The most affected arthropods were Diptera, Aranaea, Coleoptera, and Hymenoptera. No cumulative effects were observed over time, but the recovery of the invertebrate assemblage after the cessation of mosquito control was delayed due to Bti spore persistence and proliferation in the sediments. While hydrology remains a prime factor influencing primary and secondary productivity of the Camargue reed marshes, Bti spraying had significant negative effects on animal communities at several trophic levels.

Analyzing Changes in Maize Leaves Orientation due to GxExM Using an Automatic Method from RGB Images

The sowing pattern has an important impact on light interception efficiency in maize by determining the spatial distribution of leaves within the canopy.Leaves orientation is an important architectural trait determining maize canopies light interception.Previous studies have indicated how maize genotypes may adapt leaves orientation to avoid mutual shading with neighboring plants as a plastic response to intraspecific competition.The goal of the present study is 2-fold:firstly,to propose and validate an automatic algorithm(Automatic Leaf Azimuth Estimation from Midrib detection[ALAEM])based on leaves midrib detection in vertical red green blue(RGB)images to describe leaves orientation at the canopy level;and secondly,to describe genotypic and environmental differences in leaves orientation in a panel of 5 maize hybrids sowing at 2 densities(6 and 12 plants.m^(−2))and 2 row spacing(0.4 and 0.8 m)over 2 different sites in southern France.The ALAEM algorithm was validated against in situ annotations of leaves orientation,showing a satisfactory agreement(root mean square[RMSE]error=0.1,R^(2)=0.35)in the proportion of leaves oriented perpendicular to rows direction across sowing patterns,genotypes,and sites.The results from ALAEM permitted to identify significant differences in leaves orientation associated to leaves intraspecific competition.In both experiments,a progressive increase in the proportion of leaves oriented perpendicular to the row is observed when the rectangularity of the sowing pattern increases from 1(6 plants.m^(−2),0.4 m row spacing)towards 8(12 plants.m^(−2),0.8 m row spacing).Significant differences among the 5 cultivars were found,with 2 hybrids exhibiting,systematically,a more plastic behavior with a significantly higher proportion of leaves oriented perpendicularly to avoid overlapping with neighbor plants at high rectangularity.Differences in leaves orientation were also found between experiments in a squared sowing pattern(6 plants.m^(−2),0.4 m row spacing),indicating a possible contribution

Regulation of hepatic blood flow:The hepatic arterial buffer response revisited

The interest in the liver dates back to ancient times when it was considered to be the seat of life processes. The liver is indeed essential to life,not only due to its complex functions in biosynthesis,metabolism and clearance,but also its dramatic role as the blood volume reservoir. Among parenchymal organs,blood flow to the liver is unique due to the dual supply from the portal vein and the hepatic artery. Knowledge of the mutual communication of both the hepatic artery and the portal vein is essential to understand hepatic physiology and pathophysiology. To distinguish the individual importance of each of these inflows in normal and abnormal states is still a challenging task and the subject of on-going research. A central mechanism that controls and allows constancy of hepatic blood flow is the hepatic arterial buffer response. The current paper reviews the relevance of this intimate hepatic blood flow regulatory system in health and disease. We exclusively focus on the endogenous interrelationship between the hepatic arterial and portal venous inflow circuits in liver resection and transplantation,as well as inflammatory and chronic liver diseases. We do not consider the hepatic microvascular anatomy,as this has been the subject of another recent review.

Rapid laser synthesis of surfactantless tantalum-based nanomaterials as bifunctional catalysts for direct peroxide–peroxide fuel cells

Efficient and durable electrocatalysts are instrumental in enabling next-generation fuel cell technologies.At present,expensive precious metals are used as state-of-the-art catalysts.In this report,cost-effective nanosized tantalum-based alternatives are synthesized for the first time via a green and scalable laser pyrolysis method as bifunctional catalysts for direct peroxide–peroxide fuel cells.This rapid laser pyrolysis strategy allows for the production of nanoparticles at a laboratory scale of grams per hour,compatible with a detailed exploration of the functional properties of as-synthesized nanoparticles.By varying the precursor ratio between ammonia and tantalum ethanolate,five tantalum-based nanomaterials(TaNOC)are prepared with crystalline phases of Ta_(2)O_(5),Ta_(4)N_(5),Ta_(3)N_(5),and TaN in tunable ratios.Electrochemical studies in neutral and alkaline conditions demonstrate that Ta_(4)N_(5) is the active component for both H_(2)O_(2) oxidation and reduction.Kinetic isotope effect studies show that protons are involved at or before the rate-determining step.Long-term stability studies indicate that Ta_(3)N_(5) grants surfactant-free TaNOC-enhanced longevity during electrocatalytic operations.Taken together,bifunctional TaNOC can act as active and robust electrocatalysts for H_(2)O_(2) reduction and oxidation.Laser pyrolysis is envisioned to produce refractory metal nanomaterials with boosted corrosion resistance for energy catalysis.
