Distinct Morpho-Physiological Responses of Maize to Salinity Stress

Most plants demonstrate wide interactive and complex adaptive morphological, biochemical, and physiological responses when subjected to salinity stress. Salt stress negatively impacts agricultural yields more especially cultivated crops throughout the world. Of interest to this study is maize a salt- sensitive crop that is widely grown worldwide, and receiving most attention due to its significant attributes and ability to serve as a great model for stress response studies. We exposed QN701 maize cultivar, to simulated salinity stress and investigated its morphological and physiological responses. Salinity negatively induced various morphological responses such as the reduction in plant height, number of leaves, shoot and root (length and biomass), and leaf width;however, it significantly increased the leaf area. On the physiological aspect, salt stress decreased the number of stomata, stomatal density, and photosynthesis, while it increased the respiration rate. This study expanded our knowledge of the morphological and physiological responses of maize to salinity stress. Additionally, these findings may serve as a recommendation for salinity breeding programs in maize and related cereal crops.

Ghana has been a collectivistic society. However, due to social change, this value is fast being replaced by individualistic tendencies with implications for age-oriented care provision and receipt. This paper investigates the participation in the socially productive strategy of using ageing-oriented volunteerism to leverage the receipt of care in later life utilizing a quantitative dataset. The results show that volunteering may be undertaken with old age in sight. This needs to take place under circumstances of good communication skills among others. The accumulated time needs to be recorded in a time bank and redeemed with a time bank card in later life. Two-dimensional leveraging points pertain in this context: first, leveraging volunteerism for short or long-term care in the nearest future;second, technological innovation’s facilitation of the same. Volunteerism in this context has the attribute of low levels of depression, with implications for quality of life. These are discussed in the light of the social care pillar of ageing social policy. The paper argues that adopting volunteerism with reciprocation as the ultimate goal constitutes a kickback model for care receipt in later life. It served as a choice of care in later life which is a shock absorber to inadequate formal support infrastructure and individualistic social tendencies in Ghana. It is reminiscent of resistance to the shrinkage of older persons’ social integration in their social world.

This study assessed pollutants concentration at selected markets in Owerri. These markets were purposively selected after careful consideration of all major markets in the study area;the selected markets were considered to be more congested during the day as a result of open assess to road junctions coupled with a high density of vehicular movement, presence of offices, residential buildings, and human activities. Five air pollutants from vehicular emissions were monitored, namely: carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), particulate matter (PM 2.5) and particulate matter (PM 10). Assessments were carried out within 3 hours per dual diurnal section using approved standard methods which were converted to a 1-hour mean for the morning and afternoon period of sampling 7-10 am and 2-5 pm. These periods are known for the peak of human and vehicular movement within the study area. Results show that the highest level of CO concentration (0.293 - 0.387 ppm) was recorded at Alaba market and is less than the permissible limit of 35 ppm given by national ambient air quality standard (NAAQS). The highest range of CO2 (1153 - 1875 ppm) was recorded from Alaba market which is higher than the ambient standard of 314 ppm. The highest level of NO2 (0.116 - 0.297 ppm) was recorded from Relief market which is also higher than the permissible limit (0.100 ppm) of NAAQS. The heavy metal contamination status of Bight of Bonny sea bed sediment was investigated. Sediment samples were collected from eleven locations grouped into three stations. The samples were analyzed to determine the heavy metals (Fe, Pb, Ni, Zn, Mn, Co, Cd, Cu, Cr) concentration using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Index model analyses, such as geo-accumulation index (I-geo), Enrichment factor (EF), and Pollution load index (PLI) were used for pollution assessment of sea bed sediment. The most predominant heavy metals in the upstream sediment were Fe;13.57 ± 1.838 mg/kg, cobalt;7.987 ± 3.550 mg/kg, and Ni;1.020 ± 0.802 mg/kg, midstream sediment were Fe;8.554 ± 3.010 mg/kg, Co;8.520 ± 4.00 mg/kg, and Ni;1.140 ± 0.879 mg/kg, while the downstream sediment result had Fe;11.12 ± 3.825 mg/kg, Co;7.275 ± 1.700 mg/kg, and Cd;1.025 ± 0.159 /kg. The I-geo results indicate that Cu, Mn, Pb, Cr, Fe, Zn, Ni, and Co were in their background concentrations while Cd had I-geo > 3 which implies a moderately or heavily polluted environment. The EF indicates metal enrichment from anthropogenic sources for Co, Ni, Pb, Cd, Cu, and Cr while Fe and Mn predicate biogenic origin. The PLI of the heavy metals in the three sample stations of sea bed sediment was found to be generally low (cumulation index strongly suggest the Bight of Bonny sea bed sediment contamination by Cd from anthropogenic sources.

A novel mixed barium(II)/silver(I)/chromium(III) oxalate salt, Ba0.5Ag2[Cr(C2O4)3]·5H2O (1), with open architecture has been synthesized in water and characterized by elemental analysis, vibrational and electronic spectra, and single crystal X-ray structure determination. Compound 1 crystallizes in a monoclinic space group C2/c, with unit cell parameters a = 18.179(3), b = 14.743(2), c = 12.278(2)Å, β = 113.821(3), V = 3010.34(90) Å3, Z = 8. The structure is characterized by a network of anionic [Cr(C2O4)3]3- units connected through the O atoms of the oxalates to Ba2+ and Ag+ sites, forming a three-dimensional coordination polymer with one-dimensional isolated nanochannels parallel to the c axis, and encapsulating hydrogen-bonded guest water molecules. The bulk structure is consolidated by O–H···O bridgings within the nanochannels and by coulombic interactions.

Multiple endocrine neoplasia 2B(MEN2B) is a rare syndrome caused by an activating mutation of the RET gene, leading to enteric gangliomatosis. This child presented with constipation at 1-mo old, was diagnosed with MEN2 B by rectal biopsy at 4 mo, had thyroidectomy at 9 mo and a colectomy at 4 years. We studied the extent of neuronal and nerve fibre proliferation and which classes of enteric nerves are affected by examining the colon with multiple neuronal antibodies. Resected transverse colon was fixed, frozen, sectioned and processed for fluorescence immunohistochemistry labelling with antibodies against TUJ1, Hu, ChAT, NOS, VIP, SP and CGRP and cKit. Control transverse colon was from the normal margin of Hirschsprung(HSCR) colon(4-year-old) and a child with familial adenomatous polyposis(FAP, 12 year). Myenteric ganglia were increased in size to as wide as the circular muscle. There was a large increase in nerve cells and nerve fibres. ChAT-, NOS-, VIP-and SP-immunoreactive nerve fibres all increased in the myenteric ganglia. NOS-IR nerves preferentially increased in the muscle, while VIP and SP increased in submucosal ganglia and mucosal nerve fibres. The density of ICC was normal. RET overactivation in MEN2B lead to a large increase in intrinsic nerve fibres in the myenteric and submucosal ganglia, with a relative increase in NOS-IR nerve fibres in the circular muscle and VIP and SP in the submucosal ganglia and mucosa. The changes were associated with severe constipation resulting in colectomy at 4 years.

A novel chiral Nickel (II) complex of N-(2-pyridylmethyl)-L-alanine (Hpyala) 1 has been prepared and structurally characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, UV-visible, TGA and single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. Complex 1 crystallizes in an orthorhombic P212121 space group. The nickel (II) centre in the complex adopts a distorted octahedral geometry. This compound has been seen to exhibit structural diversity resulting from the number of lattice water molecules. The photoluminescent properties of this compound which have also been investigated, indicates the potential application in luminescence.
