Cs_(3)Bi_(2)l_(9)-hydroxyapatite composite waste forms for cesium and iodine immobilization

Perovskite-based ceramic composites were developed as potential waste form materials for immobilizing cesium(Cs)and iodine(I)with high waste loadings and chemical *** perovskite Cs_(3)Bi_(2)I_(9)has high Cs(22 wt%)and I(58 wt%)content,and thus can be used as a potential host phase to immobilize these critical *** this work,the perovskite Cs_(3)Bi_(2)I_(9)phase was synthesized by a cost effective solution-based approach,and was embedded into a highly durable hydroxyapatite matrix by spark plasma sintering to form dense ceramic composite waste *** chemical durabilities of the monolithic Cs_(3)Bi_(2)I_(9)and Cs_(3)Bi_(2)I_(9)-hydroxyapatite composite pellets were investigated by static and semi-dynamic leaching tests,*** and I are incongruently released from the matrix for both pure Cs_(3)Bi_(2)I_(9)and composite *** normalized Cs release rate is faster than that of I,which can be explained by the difference in the strengths between Cs-I and Bi-I bonds as well as the formation of insoluble micrometer-sized BiOI *** activation energies of elemental releases based on dissolution and diffusion-controlled mechanisms are determined with significantly higher energy barriers for dissolution from the composite versus that of the monolithic Cs_(3)Bi_(2)I_(9).The ceramic-based composite waste forms exhibit excellent chemical durabilities and waste loadings,commensurate with the state-of-the-art glass-bonded perovskite composites for I and Cs immobilization.

The Global Navigation Satellite System(GNSS)positioning method has been significantly developed in geodetic ***,the height obtained through GNSS observations is given in a geodetic height system that needs to be converted to orthometric height for engineering *** on geoid height,which can be calculated using the global geopotential mode,is required to convert such GNSS observations into orthometric ***,its accuracy is still insufficient for most engineering ***,a reliable geoid model is essential,especially in areas growing fast,e.g.,the central part of Java,*** this study,we modeled the local geoid model in the central part of Java,Indonesia,using terrestrial-based gravity *** Stokes'formula with the second Helmert's condensation method under the Remove-Compute-Restore approach was implemented to model the *** comparison between our best-performing geoid model and GNSS/leveling observations showed that the standard deviation of the geoid height differences was estimated to be 4.4 *** geoid result outperformed the commonly adopted global model of EGm2008 with the estimated standard deviation of geoid height differences of 10.7 cm.

Angling of hybrid sunfish from a hatchery pond with potential implications for community fisheries

Hatcheries are frequently called upon to produce catchable-sized fish for stocking community fishing *** attributes of fish selected for stocking into community ponds are that they are easy to produce in a hatchery system to sizes anglers are interested in catching and they provide anglers with high catch rates once *** sunfish[male Bluegill(Lepomis macrochirus)×female Green Sunfish(***)]have attributes that potentially make them attractive for use in community fishing *** assessed initial angler catch rates of 100 stocked hybrid sunfish in a 0.12-ha hatchery pond and after being subjected to angling(four,1-hr catch-and-release fishing events with five anglers).We also investigated whether catch rates would change following a supplemental stocking of an additional 100 hybrid sunfish(four,1-hr catch-and-release fishing events with five anglers).The anal fin of each fish in the second stocking was hole punched to differentiate them from those of the first stocking and fish caught by anglers were hole punched in the caudal fin each time they were caught before being released back into the *** catch rates were highest during initial fishing events that followed stocking(9.2 fish/angler hr and 18.0 fish/angler hr)and substantially declined in subsequent events(≤3.4 fish/angler hr).Catches of the newly stocked fish and previously stocked fish contributed to the high catch following the supplemental ***(80%)of the fish were caught in the first 30 min of each event and 45%were caught during the first 10 *** were able to catch 88%of the fish from the first stocking and 67%from the second stocking at least *** mortality occurred during the study as all fish were recovered when the pond was *** results suggest that hybrid sunfish will potentially provide high initial catch rates following stocking into community ponds,but managers should expect reduced catch rates following initial fishing even without h

This study revisits the question of“whether firms are doing well by doing good?”.We examine shareholders-sponsored corporate socially responsible(CSR)proposals related to Environmental,Social,and Governance(ESG)that are voted to pass or fail by a small *** adoption of those“close call”proposals is regarded as equivalent to a random assignment of CSR policies and,therefore,provides a quasi-experimental setting to capture the causal influence of CSR on firm *** apply the regression discontinuity design(RDD)and find that CSR proposals’passage leads to a significant positive abnormal return on the voting *** results are robust with both parametric and nonparametric approaches of RDD and different polynomial ***,we fail to identify a significant change in financial performance in the *** possible reason is that passing a CSR proposal could be symbolic,rather than substantial.

Crystalline compounds for remediation of rare-earth fission products:A review

Rare earth(RE)-containing crystals have been investigated as media for the immobilization of RE fission products from nuclear waste *** reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel,fission products including REs,alkalis,and alkaline earths released from the *** viable option to immobilize the RE fission products is to incorporate them into chemically durable crystalline phases in specific waste *** study summarizes the crystal structures and synthesis methods of six RE-containing compounds that have applications in remediation of RE fission *** compounds include oxyapatite(AE_(2)RE_(8)(SiO_(4))_(6)O_(2)),oxychloride(REOCl),borosilicate(RE_(3)BSi_(2)O_(10)),pyrochlore(RE_(2)m_(2)O_(7)),monazite(REPO_(4)),and perovskite(REmO_(3))where AE denotes alkaline earth metals and m denotes transition *** review provides an overview of literature on the usage of these six compounds for immobilizing RE fission products and summarizes different synthesis methods for producing these *** of structural parameters with different REs in each compound are also discussed.

We present octave-wide bandpass filters in the terahertz(THz)region based on bilayer-metamaterial(BLmm)*** passband region has a super-Gaussian shape with a maximum transmittance approaching 70%and a typical stopband rejection of 20 *** design is based on a metasurface consisting of a metallic squarehole array deposited on a transparent polymer,which is stacked on top of an identical metasurface with a subwavelength *** superimposed metasurface structures were designed using finite-difference time-domain(FDTD)simulations and fabricated using a photolithography *** characterization of these structures between 0.3 and 5.8 THz is performed with a time-domain THz spectroscopy *** agreement between experiment and simulation results is *** also demonstrated that two superimposed BLmm(2BLmm)devices increase the steepness of the roll-offs to more than 85 dB/octave and enable a superior stopband rejection approaching 40 dB while the maximum transmittance remains above 65%.This work paves the way toward new THz applications,including the detection of THz pulses centered at specific frequencies,and an enhanced time-resolved detection sensitivity toward molecular vibrations that are noise dominated by a strong,off-resonant,driving field.

Changes in oral trace gas concentrations following orthognathic surgery and intermaxillary fixation: a case study using selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry

Orthognathic surgery is frequently accompanied by intermaxillary fixation. Intermaxillary fixation impedes the maintenance of effective oral hygiene and prolonged fixation can result in periodontal disease. A potential shorter term effect is the generation of oral malodour. It is unclear, however, as to how the production of malodorous compounds in the oral cavity is altered post-surgery. Oral air concentration of sulphur containing compounds, short chain organic acids, ammonia, isoprene and acetone were measured using selected ion flow tube-mass spectrometry in a patient who had undergone orthognathic surgery with subsequent intermaxillary fixation. Total sulphide levels rose approximately 5-fold during fixation with metal ties, with smaller increases recorded for the other compounds measured with the exception of isoprene which remained close to baseline levels. Organic acid levels declined markedly once elastic ties had replaced metal ties, with a lesser reduction being observed in sulphide levels, with both declining further after the commencement of a chlorhexidinecontaining mouthwash. These data suggest that bacterial generation of a variety of malodorous compounds increases markedly following intermaxillary fixation. This single case also suggests that the use of elastic ties and effective oral hygiene techniques, including the use of chlorhexidine mouthwash, may help ameliorate such post-surgical effects.
