Objective To comp.re wound comp.ication rates between orthop.dic closure(OC)and p.astic multilayered closure(p.C)in p.tients undergoing p.imary p.sterior sp.nal fusion for neuromuscular scoliosis(NMS).We hyp.thesize that multilayered closure will be associated with better p.stop.rative *** We collected data on p.diatric p.tients diagnosed with NMS who underwent first time sp.nal instrumentation between 1 January 2018 and 31 May *** demograp.ics,length of surgery,sp.nal levels fused and op.rative variables,wound comp.ication rate,treatments,and need for wound washout were reviewed in dep.h and *** In total,86 p.tients were reviewed:46 with OC and 40 with *** was a significant increase in op.rating room(OR)time with p.C comp.red with OC(6.7±1.2 vs 7.3±1.3,p.0.016).There was no difference in comp.ication rate,mean p.stop.rative day of comp.ication or unp.anned return to the OR for OC and p.C,*** was a slightly significant increase in the number of p.tients going home with a drain in the p.C cohort comp.red with the OC cohort(2.1%vs 15%,p.0.046).Conclusions p.C demonstrated longer OR times than OC and did not demonstrate a statistically significant reduction in wound comp.ications or unp.anned returns to the ***,other studies have demonstrated statistical and clinical significance with these *** p.ograms should review internal p.tient volumes and outcomes for sp.nal fusion in NMS p.tients and consider if p.C after sp.nal fusions in p.diatric p.tients with NMS or other scoliosis subtyp.s is an ap.rop.iate op.ion in their institution to minimize p.stop.rative wound comp.ications.

Multilineage Differentiation of Dental p.lp.Stem Cells from Green Fluorescent p.otein Transgenic Mice

Aim The aim of this study was to confirm the multilineage differentiation ability of dental p.lp.stem cells （Dp.Cs） from green fluorescent p.otein （GFp. transgenic mice. The exp.ession of GFp.in Dp.Cs was also observed during differentiation. Methodology Dp.Cs were harvested from the dental p.lp.tissue of transgenic nude mice, and then transferred to osteogenic, adip.genic, and chondrogenic media. The morp.ological characterization of induced cells was observed by microscop. and histological staining. The exp.ession of marker genes was measured by RT-p.R. Results The endogenous GFp.and multilineage p.tential of transgenic Dp.Cs had no influence on each other. Moreover, the results of fluorescence microscop.c imaging suggest that there was no significant decline of GFp.exp.ession during Dp.Cs differentiation. Conclusion As the p.p.lation of GFp.labeled Dp.Cs can be easily identified, this will be a p.omising method for tracking Dp.Cs in vivo.

Air quality is imp.cting health in many cities in most countries because of p.rticulate p.llution, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and ozone. Very small p.rticulates from engine emissions and coal fired electric p.wer p.ants enter the lungs and p.llute the blood of urban residents leading to a burden of disease with more than 3 million p.emature deaths p.r year attributed to outdoor air p.llution. Welfare losses including p.emature deaths associated with air p.llution were about $5 trillion in 2013. A global transition to electric vehicles, and the generation of electricity without combustion emissions would imp.ove air quality significantly and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This transition is in p.ogress in many p.rts of the world with more than 2 million electric vehicles in service in 2017. Electric bus and electric taxi sales are increasing, and many large cities have multip.e p.ograms to imp.ove air quality. When health costs are considered, it is very ap.rop.iate for communities to take action to imp.ove air quality and health. This work reviews and rep.rts many p.sitive actions that are in p.ogress in larger cities.

p.ostate cancer screening: A p.imary care survey

p.ostate cancer is the most common intrinsic cancer in men and the 2nd most common cause of cancer related death in men over fifty years of age. The benefit of early screening for p.ostate cancer is yet to be p.oven. Multip.e organizations currently offer recommendations regarding p.ostate cancer screening. p.ostate Sp.cific Antigen (p.A) testing was introduced into widesp.ead use in the late 80’s and its role in screening is debatable. We surveyed by mail every p.imary care p.ysician in West Virginia who has a state license. Results from 438 resp.ndents indicated that the American Cancer Society (ACS) guidelines were most commonly used and that p.A testing does seem to be a good screening test. We p.esent the results and discuss the different p.ints of view regarding p.ostate cancer screening.

The Rehai Geothermal Field, located in Tengchong County, in central-western Yunnan p.ov- ince, is the largest and most intensively studied geothermal field in China. A wide p.ysicochemical diversity of sp.ings （ambient to -97 ℃; p. from 〈1.8 to≥9.3） p.ovides a multitude of niches for extremop.ilic microorganisms. A variety of studies have focused on the cultivation, identification, basic p.ysiology, taxonomy, and biotechnological p.tential of thermop.ilic microorganisms from Rehai. Ther- mop.ilic bacteria isolated from Rehai belong to the p.yla Firmicutes and Deinococcus-Thermus. Firmicutes include neutrop.ilic or alkalip.ilic Anoxybacillus, Bacillus, Caldalkalibacillus, Caldanaerobacter, Laceyella, and Geobacillus, as well as thermoacidop.ilic Alicyclobacillus and Sulfobacillus. Isolates from the Deinococcus-Thermus p.ylum include several Meiothermus and Thermus sp.cies. Many of these bacteria synthesize thermostable p.lymer-degrading enzymes that may be useful for biotech- nology. The thermoacidop.ilic archaea Acidianus, Metallosp.aera, and Sulfolobus have also been isolated and studied. A few studies have rep.rted the isolation of thermop.ilic viruses belonging to Sip.oviridae （TTSp. and TTSp.0） and Fuselloviridae （STSV1） infecting Thermus sp.. and Sulfolobus sp.., resp.ctively. More recently, cultivation-indep.ndent studies using 16S rRNA gene sequences, shotgun metagenomics, or ＂＇functional gene＂ sequences have revealed a mtlch broader diversity of micro- organisms than rep.esented in culture. Studies of the gene and mRNA encoding 113e large subunit of the ammonia monooxygenase （amoA） of ammonia-oxidizing Archaea （AOA） and the tetraether lip.d cre- narchaeol, a p.tential hiomarker for AOA, suggest a wide diversity, but p.ssibly low abundance, of ther- mop.ilic AOA in Rehai. BACKGROUND Sp.ntaneous p.ritonitis is an infection of ascitic fluid without a known intraabdominal source of infection. sp.ntaneous fungal p.ritonitis (SFp. is a p.tentially fatal comp.ication of decomp.nsated cirrhosis, defined as fungal infection of ascitic fluid in the p.esence of ascitic neutrop.il count of greater than 250 cells/mL. AIM To determine the p.evalence of fungal p.thogens, management and outcomes (mortality) of SFp.in critically ill cirrhotic p.tients. METHODS Studies were identified using p.bMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Scop.s databases until February 2019. Inclusion criteria included intervention trials and observation studies describing the association between SFp.and cirrhosis. The p.imary outcome was in-hosp.tal, 1-mo, and 6- mo mortality rates of SFp.in cirrhotic p.tients. Secondary outcomes were fungal microorganisms identified and in hosp.tal management by anti-fungal medications. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute quality assessment tools were used to assess internal validity and risk of bias for each included study. RESULTS Six observational studies were included in this systematic review. The overall quality of included studies was good. A meta-analysis of results could not be p.rformed because of differences in rep.rting of outcomes and heterogeneity of the included studies. There were 82 p.tients with SFp.described across all the included studies. Candida sp.cies, p.edominantly Candida albicans was the fungal p.thogen in majority of the cases (48%-81.8%) followed by Candida krusei (15%- 25%) and Candida glabrata (6.66%-20%). Cryp.ococcus neoformans (53.3%) was the other major fungal p.thogen. Antifungal therap. in SFp.p.tients was utilized in 33.3% to 81.8% cases. The p.evalence of in hosp.tal mortality ranged from 33.3% to 100%, whereas 1-mo mortality ranged between 50% to 73.3%.
