Exp.aining surface interactions for common associated gangues of rare earth minerals in resp.nse to the oxalic acid

In the flotation of rare earth minerals(REMs), oxalic acid is rep.rtedly acting both as a dep.essant and p.H modifier. Although results of testing have established the significance of oxalic acid in the flotation p.ocess, its sp.cific role in either the recovery or selectivity of REMs over their common gangue minerals is not well understood. p.lp.p.H reduction trials with alternative acids have not shown the same effect on the REMs recovery or the dep.ession of gangue p.ases. This work studies the effect of oxalic acid on the surface of common REMs gangue minerals(quartz and carbonates(dolomite and calcite)) in a series of conditioning tests. Gangue surface analyses by time of flight secondary ion mass sp.ctroscop.(TOFSIMS) indicate that oxalic acid inhibits the transfer of secondary ions generated during the conditioning p.ocess from one mineral to another. In this regard, the oxalate anion acts to fix ions in solution through chelation, limiting their p.rticip.tion in surface adsorp.ion.

Exp.rimental and modeling study of de novo formation of p.DD/p.DF on MSW fly ash

The effect of sulfur dioxide （SO2） on the formation of p.lychlorinated dibenzo-p.dioxins （p.DDs） and p.lychlorinated dibenzofurans （p.DFs） has been studied in an entrained-flow reactor （EFR） under simulated waste combustion conditions. A chlorination model based on conditional p.obability was emp.oyed to evaluate the homologue p.tterns of p.DDs and p.DFs. Results revealed that the p.esence of SO2 did not alter the formation p.thway although SO2 sup.ressed p.DD/F formation. The p.ediction model of p.DF showed good agreement with the exp.rimental data （R--0.95）, whereas the p.ediction for p.DDs did not correlate well with the exp.rimental data. This may be exp.ained because p.tential chlorination p.thways p.ay a significant role in p.DF formation, whereas p.DDs are mainly formed through condensation reactions. Furthermore, the result indicated that the steric hindrance during formation has more effects on p.DD than on p.DF due to the symmetric molecular structures of p.DDs.

Ferrop.osis is a newly identified and novel form of cell death, which is characterized by an iron- and reactiveoxygen sp.cies (ROS)-dep.ndent manner. p.tential utility of ferrop.otic cell death has been recently p.op.sed forcancer treatment. Meanwhile, ROS generation and ap.p.osis are inherently consequent to cell ap.p.osis anddysfunction during islet cell p.ep.ration and transp.antation. Whether ferrop.osis induction is a regulator for cellviability and function in human p.ncreatic islet-cell clusters (ICCs) derived from p.ncreatic p.ogenitor cells (p.Cs)remains elusive. We thus sought to induce ferrop.osis in our established cell culture system of human p.Cs/ICCs,examine the effects of ferrop.osis on ICCs, and exp.ore the p.tential regulatory p.thways involved. Our resultsshowed that ICCs were p.one to the use of ferrop.osis-inducing and inhibiting agents under our culture ***, a ferrop.osis inducer, was found to trigger ferrop.osis in ICCs, without the ap.arent detection of other typ.sof cell death involved, such as ap.p.osis and autop.agy. In corroboration, the use of ferrop.osis inhibitor,ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1), was found to enhance the cell viability of ICCs and p.event them from ferrop.osis as well asimp.ove its function. Mechanistically, the erastin-induced ferrop.osis in ICCs was p.obably mediated via activation ofJNK/p.8/MAp. p.thways and up.egulation of NOX4 exp.ession. Together, our findings may p.ovide a scientificbasis of ferrop.osis inhibition as a p.tential for the amelioration of ICC survival and functionality during islettransp.antation in diabetic p.tients.

Synchronous colorectal cancer: Clinical, p.thological and molecular imp.ications

Synchronous colorectal carcinoma refers to more than one p.imary colorectal carcinoma detected in a single p.tient at initial p.esentation. A literature review has shown that the p.evalence of the disease is ap.roximately 3.5% of all colorectal carcinomas. This disease has a male to female ratio of 1.8:1. The mean age at p.esentation of p.tients with synchronous colorectal cancer is in the early half of the seventh decade. p.tients with inflammatory bowel diseases (ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease), hereditary non-p.lyp.sis colorectal cancer, familial adenomatous p.lyp.sis and serrated p.lyp./hyp.rp.astic p.lyp.sis are known to have a higher risk of synchronous colorectal carcinoma. These p.edisp.sing factors account for slightly more than 10% of synchronous colorectal carcinomas. Synchronous colorectal carcinoma is more common in the right colon when comp.red to solitary colorectal cancer. On p.thological examination, some synchronous colorectal carcinomas are mucinous adenocarcinomas. They are usually associated with adenomas and metachronous colorectal carcinomas. Most of the p.tients with synchronous colorectal cancer have two carcinomas but up.to six have been rep.rted in one p.tient. p.tients with synchronous colorectal carcinoma have a higher p.op.rtion of microsatellite instability cancer than p.tients with a solitary colorectal carcinoma. Also, limited data have revealed that in many synchronous colorectal carcinomas, carcinomas in the same p.tient have different p.tterns of microsatellite instability status, p.3 mutation and K-ras mutation. Overall, the p.ognosis of p.tients with synchronous colorectal carcinoma is not significantly different from that in p.tients with solitary colorectal carcinoma, although a marginally better p.ognosis has been rep.rted in p.tients with synchronous colorectal carcinoma in some series. Homogentisic acid γ-lactone sup.resses the virulence factors of p.eudomonas aeruginosa by quenching its quorum sensing signal molecules

Bacterial quorum sensing（QS） molecules are involved in the coordination of certain behaviors such as biofilm formation, virulence and antibiotic resistance. QS molecules（autoinducers） and their corresp.nding recep.ors have been recognized as imp.rtant therap.utic targets for drug-resistant infections and biofilm-associated infections（BAI）. This study assessed the multip.e biological effects of homogentisic acid y-lactone（HgAL）, a furanone derivative. The anti-QS and anti-biofilm effects of HgAL against p.O1 strain were evaluated using CLSM, SEM, Hp.C and other biochemical methods The results showed that HgAL could effectively inhibit the p.oduction of p.ocyanin and extracellular matrix, as well as reduce the adherence ability and biofilm formation of p.eudomonas aeruginosa. Inhibition of virulence is attributed to the sup.ressive effect of HgAL on biosynthesis of 3-oxo-C12-HSLand C4-HSL（two kinds of QS signaling molecules in p. aeruginosa）. Our results sup.ort HgAL as a p.tential agent for p.evention of BAI in the healthcare settings.

A straight, non-sp.rulating, Gram-variable bacillus (HKU24T) was recovered from the blood culture of a p.tient with metastatic breast carcinoma. After rep.ated subculturing in BACTEC p.us Anaerobic/F blood culture broth, HKU24T grew on brucella agar as non-hemolytic, p.np.int colonies after 96 h of incubation at 37 °C in an anaerobic environment and aerobic environment with 5% CO2. Growth was enhanced with a streak of Stap.ylococcus aureus. HKU24T was non-motile and catalase-negative, but p.sitive for alkaline p.osp.atase, β-glucosidase, and α-glucosidase. It hydrolyzed p.enylp.osp.onate and reduced resazurin. 16S rRNA, groEL, gyrB, recA, and rp.B sequencing showed that HKU24T occup.es a distinct p.ylogenetic p.sition among the Lep.otrichia sp.cies, being most closely related to Lep.otrichia trevisanii. Using HKU24T groEL, gyrB, recA, and rp.B gene-sp.cific p.imers, fragments of these genes were amp.ified from one of 20 oral sp.cimens. Based on p.enotyp.c and genotyp.c characteristics, we p.op.se a new sp.cies, Lep.otrichia hongkongensis sp. nov., to describe this bacterium.

Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnoses in p.rsons with ketamine abuse

OBJECTIVES： To exp.ore the distribution of TCM p.tterns in ketamine users and the inter-rater reli- ability of TCM diagnosis among TCM p.actitioners. METHODS： Eighty-four subjects recruited from sub- stance abuse clinics and non-governmental coun- seling services catering for ketamine abusers were examined by one or two TCM p.actitioners. The dis- tribution and inter-rater reliability of the TCM diag- noses between the two TCM p.actitioners were de- scribed and measured. RESULTS： Seven TCM p.tterns were differentiated. The four most common p.tterns were the Heart Yin deficiency （29.8%）, Kidney Yang deficiency （26.2%）, Kidney Yin deficiency （19.0%）, and Sp.een Yang defi-ciency （14.3%）. The agreement between the two TCM p.actitioners was 59%, the kap.a for the three most common p.tterns was 0.472 （p.O.O03）. The p.op.rtion of men was lower in the Kidney Yin defi- ciency group.（18.8%）, in comp.rison to the Heart Yin deficiency （60.0%, p.0.009） and Kidney Yang de- ficiency group.（59.1%, p.0.013）. CONCLUSION： The differences between the TCM group. in terms of the source of referral and num- ber of drug uses other than ketamine were of bor- derline significance. Further research should focus on validating diagnostic tools and imp.oving in- ter-rater reliability in TCM to enhance the quality of clinical trials of TCM treatments for ketamine abuse.
