Airborne particulates play a central role in both the earth’s radiation balance and as a trigger for a wide range of health impacts. Air quality monitors are placed in networks across many cities glob-ally. Typically these provide at best a few recording locations per city. However, large spatial var-iability occurs on the neighborhood scale. This study sets out to comprehensively characterize a full size distribution from 0.25 - 32 μm of airborne particulates on a fine spatial scale (meters). The data are gathered on a near daily basis over the month of May, 2014 in a 100 km2 area encompassing parts of Richardson, and Garland, TX. Wind direction was determined to be the dominant factor in classifying the data. The highest mean PM2.5 concentration was 14.1 ± 5.7 μg·m-3 corresponding to periods when the wind was out of the south. The lowest PM2.5 concentrations were observed after several consecutive days of rainfall. The rainfall was found to not only “cleanse” the air, leaving a mean PM2.5 concentration as low as 3.0 ± 0.5 μg·m-3, but also leave the region with a more uniform PM2.5 concentration. Variograms were used to determine an appropriate spatial scale for future sensor placement to provide measurements on a neighborhood scale and found that the spatial scales varied, depending on the synoptic weather pattern, from 0.8 km to 5.2 km, with a typical length scale of 1.6 km.

Current biological control methods to prevent pre-harvest aflatoxin contamination of corn, cottonseed, and ground and tree nuts involve field inoculation of non-aflatoxigenic Aspergillus flavus. To date, the efficacy of this approach requires annual reapplication of the biocontrol agent. The reason for this requirement is uncertain. To track the dispersal and test the longevity of these strains, we prepared fluorescent biocontrol strains by incorporating into them the gene expressing the enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP). We first investigated the effects of eGFP transformation on the ability of the fluorescent fungus to compete with its non-fluorescent homolog, and then with other heterologous non-aflatoxigenic strains as well as with aflatoxigenic isolates. Our findings indicate that, in these studies, detection of fluorescence was variable, with some fluorescent strains exhibiting enhanced growth and sporulation post-transformation. In our tests, not all transformed strains proved to be good candidates for tracking because their fluorescence was reduced over the course of our study. Most of the transformed strains retained fluorescence and showed robust colony growth in an artificial competitor environment;therefore, they should be suited for further trial under more natural settings. Our ultimate objective is to determine if out-crossing between biocontrol strains and native field populations is occurring in a natural setting.

Performing analog computations with metastructures is an emerging wave-based paradigm for solving mathematical *** such devices,one major challenge is their reconfigurability,especially without the need for a priori mathematical computations or computationally-intensive *** equation-solving capabilities are applied only to matrices with special spectral(eigenvalue)*** we report the theory and design of wave-based metastructures using tunable elements capable of solving integral/differential equations in a fully-reconfigurable *** consider two architectures:the Miller architecture,which requires the singular-value decomposition,and an alternative intuitive direct-complex-matrix(DCM)architecture introduced here,which does not require a priori mathematical *** examples,we demonstrate,using system-level simulation tools,the solutions of integral and differential *** then expand the matrix inverting capabilities of both architectures toward evaluating the generalized moore-Penrose matrix ***,we provide evidence that metadevices can implement generalized matrix inversions and act as the basis for the gradient descent method for solutions to a wide variety of ***,a general upper bound of the solution convergence time reveals the rich potential that such metadevices can offer for stationary iterative schemes.

美国加州大学圣迭戈分校(UCSD)的科研信息化基础设施(RCI)项目的目标是在集中存储、主机托管、计算、数据管理、联网和技术服务等方面为师生员工提供长期优质的服务。在2012年9月到2013年2月之间,为了确定数据存储的要求以及工作优先排序,RCI数据服务团队(RCIDS)与多名教师和高级职员进行了一系列访谈。这些采访涉及了圣迭戈分校的29个独立的部门和科研单位,有50个不同的小组参加,共代表了600多名研究人员。这些研究小组的各样数据,从人类基因组序列,海洋天然产物,到宇宙模拟实验,是与全球成千上万用户分享的。根据这些访谈的结果,我们总结了圣迭戈分校研究人员对数据服务的10个要求以及5个现有的挑战与风险。RCIDS提出在一个可持续的商业模式下,首先部署网络附加存储(NAS)数据服务;然后,再通过进一步的讨论以及考虑新兴的云计算技术来确定更长远的服务计划;最后,我们对于建立可持续性的高等教育e-科学基础设施的实施方案,基于云计算的数据服务,以及可吸取的经验教训提供了广泛的讨论。
