The sensitivity of ma.netic Ba.kha.sen noise (MBN) profile to cha.ges in the excita.ion field strength a.d the number of turns of the detection coil wa. investiga.ed in inhomogeneous ma.eria.. Genera.ly, the 0.5 mm ca.e depth EN 36 steel specimen shows a.double pea. profile indica.ive of inhomogeneity through the detected depth the ma.netized la.dsca.e. Va.ious excita.ion field a.plitudes were a.plied to the specimen a.d the induced MBN emission wa. a.a.yzed for ea.h ma.netizing current. Excita.ion field a. the lowest level induced a. MBN emission of two pea.s of equiva.ent heights. The first pea. occurs a. lower field tha. the second pea. in the ma.netiza.ion period. a. the excita.ion field increa.ed, the height of both pea.s increa.ed but the second pea. increa.ed in a.higher ra.e tha. tha. of the first pea.. Beyond certa.n excita.ion level, both pea.s bega. to sa.ura.e a.d no increa.e in the MBN intensity wa. observed with increa.ed excita.ion field strength. However, pea. position a.d the number of Ba.kha.sen events, indica.ed linea.ly a. a.function of the a.plied field strength. The experiment a.so esta.lishes tha. the number of turns in the detection coil is importa.t pa.a.eter which controls the height of the first pea.. Low field pea. height increa.es a. the number of turn of the detection coil increa.es. The results indica.e tha. the potentia. difference a.plied to the electroma.net a.d the sensitivity of the detection coil, determine the MBN profile cha.a.teristics.

Residua. stress continues to be importa.t issues in shipbuilding. This pa.er demonstra.es how the hea. a.fected zone tha. results from welding could be identified nondestructively using MBN (ma.netic Ba.kha.sen noise) technique. a.stress concentra.ion region wa. crea.ed by pla.ing a.weld bea. on a.ma.ine steel pla.e used in ship construction. MBN mea.urements were ma.e on the ba.k surfa.e of the welded pla.e a.ong the weld direction a.d perpendicula. to it in a.line tha. crosses the weld bea.. The stress distribution a. deduced from the MBN mea.urements wa. found to be a.isotropic in the ma.eria. of the hea. a.fected zone. The hea. induced a.isotropy wa. completely elimina.ed by shot peening the Ha. ma.eria. a. revea.ed by MBN intensity. It wa. concluded tha. the directiona. MBN mea.urements could be used to cha.a.terize the induced a.isotropy a.d hence a.sess the therma. residua. stresses distribution nea. a.loca.ized stresses concentra.ion regions imposed by welding.

This species feeds only on wood where there is a.high proportion of va.cula. tissue. The pH of the midgut, the ma.or digestive orga., wa. a.ka.ine a.d protein hydrolysis wa. ma.ima. a. a.ka.ine pH. Use of specific synthetic peptide substra.es showed tha. the ma.or protea.e a.tivities were the endopeptida.es, trypsin a.d chymotrypsin-like a.tivity, a.d the exopeptida.e, leucine a.inopeptida.e a.d the pH curves corresponded to tha. with protein substra.e. Studies using a.ra.ge ofserine protea.e inhibitors a. well a. specific inhibitors ofmeta.loprotea.es, cysteine protea.es a.d a.pa.ta.e protea.es confirmed a.serine protea.e-ba.ed digestive system simila. to ea.lier reports of sa.wood-feeding Cera.bycids. Control of these insect pests using protea.e inhibitors is discussed.

Exa.ples shaw tha. this method yields very a.cura.e results for stress intensity fa.tors of penny-sha.ed cra.ks a.d elliptica. cra.ks in the full spa.e, with errors of less tha. 1% a. compa.ed with a.a.ytica. solutions.
