Nano-chromium picolinate and heat stress enhance insulin sensitivity in cross-bred sheep

This study evaluated the effects of heat stress(HS)and dietary nano chromium picolinate(nCrPic)on metabolic responses of sheep to an intravenous glucose tolerance test(IVGTT),an intravenous insulin tolerance test(ITT)and an intramuscular adrenocorticotropin hormone(ACTH)challenge in ***-six sheep housed in metabolic cages were randomly allocated within 3 dietary groups(0,400 and 800 mg/kg supplemental nCrPic)to either thermoneutral(22℃)or cyclic HS(22 to 40℃)conditions for 3 *** plasma glucose tended to be increased during HS(P=0.052)and decreased by dietary nCrPic(P=0.013)while plasma non-esterified fatty acid concentrations were decreased(P=0.010)by ***-etary nCrPic reduced the plasma glucose area under the curve(P=0.012)while there were no significant effects of HS on plasma glucose area under the curve in response to the *** plasma insulin response over the first 60 min after the IVGTT was decreased by HS(P=0.013)and dietary nCrPic(P=0.022)with the effects being *** response to the ITT plasma glucose reached a nadir sooner(P=0.005)in sheep exposed to HS,although there was no effect on the depth of the *** nCrPic decreased(P=0.007)the plasma glucose nadir after *** the duration of the ITT plasma insulin concentrations were lower in sheep exposed to HS(P=0.013)whereas there was no significant effect of supplemental *** was no effect of either HS or nCrPic on cortisol response to *** nCrPic supple-mentation decreased(P=0.013)mitogen-activated protein kinase-8(JNK)and increased(P=0.050)carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1B(CPT1B)mrNA expression in skeletal *** of this experiment demonstrated that animals under HS and supplemented with nCrPic had greater insulin sensitivity.

Advances in numerical simulation techniques play an important role in helpingmining engineers understand those parts of the rock mass that cannot be readily *** Material Point Method(MPM)is an example of such a tool that is gaining popularity for studying geotechnical *** recent years,the original formulation of MPM has been extended to not only account for simulating the mechanical behaviour of rock under different loading conditions,but also to describe the coupled interaction of pore water and solid phases in *** methods assume that the permeability of mediums is homogeneous,and we show that these MPM techniques fail to accurately capture the correct behaviour of the fluid phase if the permeability of the material is *** this work,we propose a novel implementation of the coupled MPM to address this *** employ an approach commonly used in coupled Finite Volume Methods,known as the Two Point Flux Approximation(TPFA).Our new method is benchmarked against two well-known analytical expressions(a one-dimensional geostatic consolidation and the so-called Mandel-Cryer effect).Its performance is compared to existing coupled MPM approaches for homogeneous *** order to gauge the possible effectiveness of our technique in the field,we apply ourmethod to a case study relating to a mine known to experience severe problems with pore water.

To reduce greenhouse gas emission from oil and gas production,it is essential to better convert methane to useful chemicals(rather) than to flare *** of methane to liquid oxygenates(mainly methanol) has attracted extensive attention and countless efforts have been made;however,running this reaction in a green,efficient,and practical way has remained *** novel catalyst and oxidants play a critical role in activating methane and converting it to oxygenates(methanol).In this review,the work of commonly used oxidants for methane partial oxidation have been summarized,in which,earth abundant oxidants,O;and H;O are ***,H;or CO can activate O;to produce H;O;that catalyzes methane partial oxidation more efficiently and selectively than O;or H;***,the work of using reducing agent,such as CO and H;have been reviewed,focusing on rational catalyst design that features multifunction(H;O;production and CH;activation).The novel catalyst design has advanced this reaction towards practicality with green oxidants and H;using zeolites-based *** friendly zeolite preparation methods and novel two-dimensional(2 D) zeolites that can reduce waste,improve synthesis and catalytical performance substantially are also reviewed in this work to provide insights for a more comprehensive approach to meet the environment protection needs.

Parallelization and Acceleration of Dynamic Option Pricing Models on GPU-CPU Heterogeneous Systems

In this paper,stochastic global optimization algorithms,specifically,genetic algorithm and simulated annealing are used for the problem of calibrating the dynamic option pricing model under stochastic volatility to market prices by adopting a hybrid programming *** performance of this dynamic option pricing model under the obtained optimal parameters is also *** enhance the model throughput and reduce latency,a heterogeneous hybrid programming approach on GPU was adopted which emphasized a data-parallel implementation of the dynamic option pricing model on a GPU-based *** offloading to the GPU of the compute-intensive segments of the pricing algorithms was done in *** GPU approach was found to significantly reduce latency by an optimum of 541 times faster than a parallel implementation approach on the CPU,reducing the computation time from 46.24 minutes to 5.12 seconds.

Speciation by selection： A framework for understanding ecology＇s role in speciation

Speciation research during the last several decades has confirmed that natural selection frequently drives the generation of new species. But how does this process generally unfold in nature? We argue that answering this question requires a clearer conceptual framework for understanding selection’s role in speciation. We present a unified framework of speciation, providing mechanistic descriptions of fundamentally distinct routes to speciation, and how these may interact during lineage splitting. Two major categories are recognized: reproductive isolation resulting from (1) responses to selection, “speciation by selection,” or (2) non-selective processes, “speciation without selection.” Speciation by selection can occur via three mechanisms: (1) similar selection, (2) divergent selection, and (3) reinforcement selection. Understanding ecology’s role in speciation requires uncovering how these three mechanisms contribute to reproductive isolation, and their relative importance compared to non-selective processes, because all three mechanisms can occur side-by-side during speciation. To accomplish this, we highlight examination of groups of organisms inhabiting replicated environmental gradients. This scenario is common in nature, and a large literature illustrates that both parallel and non-parallel responses to similar environments are widespread, and each can result in speciation. This recognition reveals four general pathways of speciation by similar or divergent selection—parallel and nonparallel responses to similar and divergent selection. Altogether, we present a more precise framework for speciation research, draw attention to some under-recognized features of speciation, emphasize the multidimensionality of speciation, reveal limitations of some previous tests and descriptions of speciation mechanisms, and point to a number of directions for future investigation.

recent advances in machine learning(ML)have led to substantial performance improvement in material database benchmarks,but an excellent benchmark score may not imply good generalization *** we show that ML models trained on Materials Project 2018 can have severely degraded performance on new compounds in Materials Project 2021 due to the distribution *** discuss how to foresee the issue with a few simple ***,the uniform manifold approximation and projection(UMAP)can be used to investigate the relation between the training and test data within the feature ***,the disagreement between multiple ML models on the test data can illuminate out-of-distribution *** demonstrate that the UMAP-guided and query by committee acquisition strategies can greatly improve prediction accuracy by adding only 1%of the test *** believe this work provides valuable insights for building databases and models that enable better robustness and generalizability.

Evolving role of the endoscopist in management of gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumors

Neuroendocrine tumors(NETs) are uncommon gastrointestinal neoplasms but have been increasingly recognized over the past few decades. Luminal NETs originate from the submucosa of the gastrointestinal tract and careful endoscopic exam is a key for accurate diagnosis. Despite their reputation as indolent tumors with a good prognosis,some NETs may have aggressive features with associated poor long-term survival. Management of NETs requires full understanding of tumor size,depth of invasion,local lymphadenopathy status,and location within the gastrointestinal tract. Staging with endoscopic ultrasound or cross-sectional imaging is important for determining whether endoscopic treatment is feasible. In general,small superficial NETs can be managed by endoscopic mucosal resection and endoscopic submucosal dissection(ESD). In contrast,NETs larger than 2 cm are almost universally treated with surgical resection with lymphadenectomy. For those tumors between 11-20 mm in size,careful evaluation can identify which NETs may be managed with endoscopic resection. The increasing adoption of ESD may improve the results of endoscopic resection for luminal NETs. However,enthusiasm for endoscopic resection must be tempered with respect for the more definitive curative results afforded by surgical treatment with more advanced lesions.
