Under.tanding the inter.ctions between inor.anic nanomater.als and biological species is an impor.ant topic for.sur.ace and envir.nmental chemistr.. In this wor., we systematically studied the oocysts of Cr.ptospor.dium pa r.v u m as a model pr.tozoan par.site and its inter.ction with gold nanopar.icles (AuNPs) and gr.phene oxide (GO). The as-pr.par.d citr.te-capped AuNPs adsor. str.ngly on the oocysts leading to a vivid color.change. The adsor.tion of the AuNPs was confir.ed by tr.nsmission electr.n micr.scopy. Heat tr.atment fully inhibited the color.change, indicating a lar.e change of sur.ace chemistr. of the oocysts that can be pr.bed by the AuNPs. Adding pr.teases such as tr.psin and pr.teinase K par.ially inhibited the color.change. DNA-capped AuNPs, on the other.hand, could not be adsor.ed by the oocysts. GO was found to wr.p ar.und the oocysts for.ing a confor.al shell r.flecting the shape of the oocysts. Both citr.tecapped AuNPs and GO compr.mised the membr.ne integr.ty of the oocysts as indicated by the pr.pidium iodide staining exper.ment, and they may be potentially used for.inactivating the oocysts. This is the fir.t example of using nanomater.als to pr.be the sur.ace of the oocysts, and it suggests the possibility of using such or.anisms to template the assembly of nanomater.als.
