Smoking and Health-Related Quality of Life(SF-36).A Population-Based Study in Campinas,SP,Brazil

Introduction: Smoking persists as a global and relevant health problem being one of the major risk factors to non-communicable diseases and early death. Studies on the association between smoking and health related quality of life (HRQL) are scarce in Brazil and Latin America. The aim of this study was to analyze the HRQL according to smoking status on adults aged 20 to 59 years, living in Campinas, Brazil. Method: It is a population-based cross-sectional study, carried out with data from the Campinas Health Survey developed in 2008/2009. The dependent variables were the eight scales and the two components—physical (PCS) and mental component summary (MCS) of the instrument SF-36, version 2. Means and confidence intervals of the SF-36 scale scores and components were estimated according to smoking (never smokers, former smokers, current smokers) and nicotine dependence (mild, moderate, heavy). Results: The sample comprised 957 individuals (mean age of 37.5 years). Comparing with never smokers, smokers had lower score means in all SF-36 scales, except in physical functioning and role-physical;among the former smokers, lower scores were observed in vitality and mental health. A reduction of the MCS score was observed among smokers and former smokers among men;but in the female population, this reduction was observed only in smokers compared with never smokers. According to the nicotine dependence, it was observed an increasing reduction in MCS scores from mild, to moderate and heavy smokers. Conclusion: Smoking is significantly and negatively associated with HRQL in the studied population. The results point out the importance of the strategic policies against smoking, to reduce morbidity and premature death, but also to increase the quality of life and well-being. It is also important to consider the mental health dimension, since that best mental health can be relevant to promote healthier behaviors.

Rotational Oscillation Effect on Flow Characteristics of a Circular Cylinder at Low Reynolds Number

Two dimensional numerical simulations of flow around a rotationally oscillating circular cylinder were performed at Re = 1000. A wide range of forcing frequencies, fr, and three values of oscillation amplitudes, A, are considered. Different vortex shedding modes are observed for a fixed A at several values of fr, as well as for a fixed fr at different values of A. The 2C mode of vortex shedding was obtained in the present study. It is important to point out that this mode has not been observed by other investigators for rotationally oscillating case. Also, it is verified that this mechanism has great influence on the drag coefficient for high frequency values. Furthermore, the lift and pressure coefficients and the power spectra density are also analyzed.

Cytomegalovirus is the most frequent agent of congenital viral infections,affecting approximately 0.2%-2.4%of live births in different countries[1-7].Universal screening for congenital cytomegalovirus infection in newborns is not a standard practice considering cost-benefit issues and viabil-ity of diagnostic ***,most newborns are asympto-matic and there is no effective treatment for this population[2-5].

Evaluation of Quality of Life and Oral Changes of Patients in Head and Neck Radiotherapy: Observational Study

Radiotherapy (RT) in the head and neck, despite coming from technological evolution, is challenged by the acute and late side effects of local irradiation, including permanent loss of saliva, osteoradionecrosis, dental caries induced by radiation and necrosis of the oral cavity, mucositis, xerostomia and secondary infections like candidiasis. Since these manifestations are limiting and the integrity of the vital organs contemplates the patient’s general health status, the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) can be significantly affected by the treatment of head and neck cancer (HNC), since cancer can cause important changes in vital functions related to communication, food and social contact, causing disturbances in the patient’s life. An observational and longitudinal study was carried out with 16 cancer patients submitted to RT in the head and neck, between the years 2019-2020 with the objectives of collecting clinical and epidemiological data on the main oral changes caused by RT in the head and neck and correlating them with the impact on OHRQoL. To analyze the OHRQoL, the University of Washington’s Quality of Life Assessment questionnaire (UW-QOL) was applied once a week for 4 weeks and to observe oral manifestations, a dental clinic file standardized by the researchers was applied. The main oral manifestations clinically observed were hyposalivation, trismus and oral mucositis. The UW-QOL presented pain, chewing and taste as the main complaints reported by patients, however, appearance, salivation and chewing showed statistically significant differences over the weeks. Application of NURBS for Obtaining Free Form Curves and Surfaces in Spur and Helical Gears by Using CMM （Coordinate Measurement Machine）

Currently, engineering processes require reduced manufacturing time and low cost, in addition to the growing demand for workpieces with high accuracy. Workpieces with complex geometries and free forms has been a common practice in industries from different sectors such as： automotive, aeronautics, bioengineering among others. One way to satisfy the market requirements satisfactorily is making measurements more efficient to make the production process faster, in other words, it is necessary to make the inspection system more accurate and flexible. The coordinate measuring evolved over the past three decades and today it is the technology that best meets the requirements of modem manufacturing through CMMs （coordinate measurement machines）. The CMMs are important tool for design, fabrication and inspection of manufactured products, also used in the application of reverse engineering. These machines are also used by engineers in order to produce an accurate digital model in a virtual space for later use in CAD （computer-aided design）/CAM （computer-aided manufacturing）. It is worth mentioning that the accuracy of the modeling process of given piece depends on the number of control points that are captured on the workpiece surface. Consequently, the laser inspection systems are the best tools for use in reverse engineering, but more expensive when compared to contact measurement systems that use the TTP （touch trigger probe）, also used by CMMs. In this case, this paper aims to present an approach based on NURBS （non-uniform rational B-splines） to obtain free form curves and surfaces from a group of points obtained by using a contact sensor, the touch trigger probe. NURBS is an important mathematical tool and consists of generalizations of Bezier curves and surfaces and B-splines. Hepatic encephalopathy(HE)is a cognitive disturbance characterized by neuropsychiatric *** occurs in acute and chronic hepatic disease and also in patients with portosystemic *** presence of these portosystemic shunts allows the passage of nitrogenous substances from the intestines through systemic veins without liver ***,the embolization of these shunts has been performed tocontrol HE manifestations,but the presence of portal vein thrombosis is considered a *** this presentation we show a cirrhotic patient with severe HE and portal vein thrombosis who was submitted to embolization of a large portosystemic *** report:a 57 years-old cirrhotic patient who had been hospitalized many times for persistent HE and hepatic coma,even without precipitant *** had a wide portosystemic shunt and also portal vein *** abdominal angiography confirmed the splenorenal shunt and showed other *** larger shunt was embolized through placement of microcoils,and the patient had no recurrence of overt *** was a little increase of esophageal and gastric varices,but no endoscopic treatment was *** portosystemic shunts are frequent causes of recurrent HE in cirrhotic patients,portal vein thrombosis should be considered a relative contraindication to perform a shunt ***,in particular cases with many shunts and severe HE,we found that one of these shunts can be safely embolized and this procedure can be sufficient to obtain a good HE *** conclusion,we reported a case of persistent HE due to a wide portosystemic shunt associated with portal vein *** the patient had other shunts,she was successfully treated by embolization of the larger shunt.

Grain-size end-members and environmentally sensitive grain-size components: A comparative study in the mud shelf depocenters off southern Brazil

The current study aims to do a comparative analysis of the results obtained with two End-Member(EM)grain-size modeling techniques(Analy Size and Bas EMMA) and the Environmental Sensitive Grain-Size(ESGS) modeling for sediment samples collected in the mudbelts of the southern Brazilian shelf. The methods were compared using grain-size data from the south Brazilian shelf, and the results are discussed here. It is the first time that the concept of ESGS, in its present form, is utilized outside China. The results show that despite its relative ease of use, the ESGS is not fully comparable to the EM analyses, and only two grain-size ESGS classes were recognized as analogous to EMs. The comparison of the Analy Size and Bas EMMA procedures also revealed significant differences between the techniques. A comparative analysis between the two EM techniques revealed advantages in the Bas EMMA, especially in the better correlation of the end-members with the original grain size distribution. The analysis of the geographical distribution of the EM abundances allowed point sources of sandy populations to be recognized as well as the contribution of the Rio de la Plata as a source of silty sediments to be inferred.

Functional abdominal pain disorders(FAPDs) are an important and prevalent cause of functional gastrointestinal disorders among children, encompassing the diagnoses of functional dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome, abdominal migraine, and the one not previously present in Rome Ⅲ, functional abdominal pain not otherwise specified. In the absence of sufficiently effective and safe pharmacological treatments for this public problem, non-pharmacological therapies emerge as a viable means of treating these patients, avoiding not only possible side effects, but also unnecessary prescription, since many of the pharmacological treatments prescribed do not have good efficacy when compared to placebo. Thus, the present study provides a review of current and relevant evidence on non-pharmacological management of FAPDs, covering the most commonly indicated treatments, from cognitive behavioral therapy to meditation, acupuncture, yoga, massage, spinal manipulation, moxibustion, and physical activities. In addition, this article also analyzes the quality of publications in the area, assessing whether it is possible to state if non-pharmacological therapies are viable, safe, and sufficiently well-based for an appropriate and effective prescription of these treatments. Finally, it is possible to observe an increase not only in the number of publications on the non-pharmacological treatments for FAPDs in recent years, but also an increase in the quality of these publications. Finally, the sample selection of satisfactory age groups in these studies enables the formulation of specific guidelines for this age group, thus avoiding the need for adaptation of prescriptions initially made for adults, but for children use.
