Effects of N on Plant Response to Heat-wave:A Field Study with Prairie Vegetation

More intense, more frequent, and longer heat-waves are expected in the future due to global warming, which could have dramatic ecological impacts. Increasing nitrogen （N） availability and its dynamics will likely impact plant responses to heat stress and carbon （C） sequestration in terrestrial ecosystems. This field study examined the effects of N availability on plant response to heat-stress （HS） treatment in naturally-occurring vegetation. HS （5 d at ambient or 40.5 ℃） and N treatments （±N） were applied to 16 1 m^2 plots in restored prairie vegetation dominated by Andropogon gerardii （warm-season C4 grass） and Solidago canadensis （warm-season C3 forb）. Before, during, and after HS, air, canopy, and soil temperature were monitored; net CO2 assimilation （Pn）, quantum yield of photosystem Ⅱ （ФpsⅡ）, stomatal conductance （gs）, and leaf water potential （ψw） of the dominant species and soil respiration （Rsoll） of each plot were measured daily during HS. One week after HS, plots were harvested, and C% and N% were determined for rhizosphere and bulk soil, and above-ground tissue （green/senescent leaf, stem, and flower）. Photosynthetic N-use efficiency （PNUE） and N resorption rate （NRR） were calculated. HS decreased Pn, gs, ψw, and PNUE for both species, and ＋N treatment generally increased these variables （±HS）, but often slowed their post-HS recovery. Aboveground biomass tended to decrease with HS in both species （and for green leaf mass in S. canadensis）, but decrease with ＋N for A. gerardii and increase with ＋N for S. canadensis. For A. gerardii, HS tended to decrease N% in green tissues with ＋N, whereas in S. canadensis, HS increased N% in green leaves. Added N decreased NRR for A. gerardii and HS increased NRR for S. canadensis. These results suggest that heat waves, though transient, could have significant effects on plants, communities, and ecosystem N cycling, and N can influence the effect of heat waves.

The geographical extent of Brazil exceeds 8.5 million km2 and encompasses a complex mix of biomes and other environmental *** decision support tools are needed to help support management of these diverse Brazilian natural resources including ecohydrological *** use of the Soil and water Assessment Tool(SwAT)ecohydrological watershed-scale model in Brazil has increased greatly during the past *** over 100 SwAT studies were identified in this review which have been published during 1999 to 2015 in Brazilian and international journals,conference proceedings,and as theses or dissertations,many of which are written in *** majority of these studies(102 total)are reviewed here as part of an extensive survey covering the 1999 to 2013 time *** and spatial distributions,a summary of hydrologic calibration and validation results and a synopsis of the types of applications that were performed are reported for the surveyed studies.A smaller subset of recent Brazilian studies published in English between 2012 and 2015 in scientific journals are also reviewed,with emphasis on hydrologic and sediment transport testing results as well as scenario applications that were *** majority of the surveyed SwAT studies was performed for watersheds located in the South and Southeast regions of Brazil(67%)and was conducted in the context of academic *** 50%of the surveyed studies reported only hydrologic *** trends were found for the subset of more recent English *** studies have been reported that describe applications of SwAT in Brazil by private firms or government agencies;this review indicates that the potential exists for increased numbers of such studies in the ***,there is evidence that a lack of accessibility to adequate quality input data is a possible hindrance to the more general use of SwAT for watershed applications in Brazil.

High-Spin Structure in Neutron-Rich ^108Ru Nucleus

High spin states in the neutron-rich 108Ru nucleus have been studied through measuring prompt γ-ray coincidences following the spontaneous fission of 252Cf with the Gammasphere detector array. The yrast band has been confirmed. The one-phonon γ-vibrational band and the two-quasiparticle band based on the 5- level have been extended up to 13+ and 15-, respectively. In addition, two levels at 1644.8keV and 1826.5keV excitation energies are newly identified and proposed to be the members of a two phonon γ-vibrational band. It is shown that the 108Ru nucleus has triaxial deformation with parameters β2～0.29 and γ=-22°from the total Routhian surface calculations. The observed band crossing in the yrast band is due to the alignment of a pair of h11/2 neutrons according to the cranked shell model calculations. The possible configuration for the two-quasiparticle band has been discussed.

Introduction: Improvement in new patient access to urologic care is important and is increasingly measured as a reflection of practice quality. Two broad categories affect patient access: provider issues and patient preferences. we chose to study the previously unreported patient choices that affect access delays between the time a urology appointment is requested and the urology appointment itself. Methods: A 3-week real time telephone survey was conducted with callers seeking a urology appointment. If the callers did not choose the first available appointment, they were questioned as to why they did not. This data was then compared to a 3-month access delay graph noting the number of new patients offered each day. Results: Adult and pediatric urologic clinics were evaluated separately. For adult clinics, 14% of patients chose not to accept the first available appointments and 5% sought urologic care elsewhere. For pediatric clinics, 44% delayed access beyond the first available appointment. Of these, 26% were asked by the physician to delay in order to time appointments with imaging studies on the same day, or were advised to wait longer because of the nature of the patient’s diagnosis. Parents’ choice delayed 18% of the appointments beyond the first available appointment. Discussion: These data reveal that about 85% of new patient access falls within the provider’s control. The other 15% of delays rest on the preferences of the patients. These decisions significantly skew the access delay data that is increasingly being used to measure the quality of a urology practice.

Rotational bands in neutron-rich 98Sr nucleus have been investigated by measuring high-fold prompt λ-ray coincidence events of the spontaneous fission of 252Cf with the Gammasphere detector array. A deformed K=3 band built on the 1838 keV level has been confirmed and extended. Another deformed K=6 band based on the 2535keV level has been established. Both the bands originate most probably from the v 2/9[404] v2/3[411] two-quasiparticle configuration with Ω=|Ω1-Ω2|and Ω=|Ω1- Ω2|, respectively. Based on the delay-coincidence measurements, the half-lives for the K=3 and K=6 band head levels have been obtained to be 13±3 ns and 4.5± 1.0 ns, respectively.
