Geotechnical investigation of low-plasticity organic soil treated with nano-calcium carbonate

Soil stabilization using nanomaterials is an emerging research area although,to date,its investigation has mostly been laboratory-based and therefore requires extensive study for transfer to practical field *** present study advocates nano-calcium carbonate(Ncc)material,a relatively unexplored nanomaterial additive,for stabilization of low-plasticity fine-grained soil having moderate organic *** plasticity index,compaction,unconfined compressive strength(UcS),compressibility and permeability characteristics of the 0.2%,0.4%,0.6%and 0.8%Ncc-treated soil,and untreated soil(as control),were determined,including investigations of the effect of up to 90-d curing on the UcS and permeability *** terms of UcS improvement,0.4%Ncc addition was identified as the optimum dosage,mobilizing a UcS at 90-d curing of almost twice that for the untreated *** treated soil,particle aggregation arising from Ncc addition initially produced an increase in the permeability coef-ficient,but its magnitude decreased for increased curing owing to calcium silicate hydrate(cSH)gel formation,although still remaining higher compared to the untreated soil for all dosages and curing periods *** index decreased for all Ncc-treated soil *** mic.o-graphs indicated the presence of gel patches along with particle aggregation.X-ray diffraction(XRD)results showed the presence of hydration products,such as *** increases in UcS are initially attributed to void filling and then because of cSH gel formation with increased curing.

Intermittent swelling and shrinkage of a highly expansive soil treated with polyacrylamide

This laboratory study examines the potential use of an anionic polyacrylamide(PAM)-based material as an environmentally sustainable additive for the stabilization of an expansive soil from South *** experimental program consisted of consistency limits,sediment volume,compaction and oedometer cyclic swell-shrink tests,performed using distilled water and four different PAM-to-water solutions of P_(D)=0.1 g/L,0.2 g/L,0.4 g/L and 0.6 g/L as the mixing ***,the relative swelling and shrinkage strains were found to decrease with increasing number of applied swell-shrink cycles,with an‘elastic equilibrium’condition achieved on the conclusion of four *** propensity for swelling/shrinkage potential reduction(for any given cycle)was found to be in favor of increasing the PAM dosage up to P_(D)=0.2 g/L,beyond which the excess PAM molecules self-associate as aggregates,thereby functioning as a lubricant instead of a flocculant;this critical dosage was termed‘maximum flocculation dosage’(MFD).The MFD assertion was discussed and validated using the consistency limits and sediment volume properties,both exhibiting only marginal variations beyond the identified MFD of P_(D)=0.2 g/*** accumulated axial strain progressively transitioned from‘expansive’for the unamended soil to an ideal‘neutral’state at the MFD,while higher dosages demonstrated undesirable‘contractive’states.

Stability, variation, and application of AFIS fiber length distributions

Evaluation of the Quick Wee method of inducing faster clean catch urine collection in pre‑continent infants: a randomized controlled trial

Sticking together:Mechanisms of quartz synneusis in high-silica magma

The formation of crystal clusters by synneusis(magmatic sintering)affects a wide range of magmatic systems from olivine clusters in komatiite to quartz clusters in high-silica granite.A common feature of synneusis in any mineral phase is the alignment of neighbouring crystals in certain lower-energy orientation ***,the underlying mechanisms involved with both the alignment of crystals in lower-energy orientations and the binding of crystal clusters are not well *** the absence of mechanisms that bind crystals together upon contact,the same hydrodynamic forces that may bring crystals together can in theory also serve to disaggregate *** I use cathodoluminescence imaging and crystal orientation data from quartz clusters in high-silica granite to show that i)rapid crystalline neck growth along attachment surfaces and ii)grain rotation are two mechanisms that reduce the grain boundary energy of crystal clusters while increasing clusters’shear *** continued crystallization of sintered phases as the magmatic body c.ols further cements crystal pairs and resists cluster *** these mechanisms underpin both the formation and preservation of large crystal clusters in dynamic magmatic environments.

Towards a Wireless Sensor Platform for Energy Efficient Building operation

currently, the IT-support for energy performance rating of buildings is insufficient. So-called IT-platforms often 'built' of an ad-hoc, inconsistent combination of off-the-shelf building management compo-nents, distributed data metering equipment and several monitoring software tools. A promising approach to achieve consistent, holistic performance data management is the implementation of an integrated, modular wireless sensor platform. This paper presents an approach of how wireless sensors can be seamlessly integrated into existing and future intelligent building management systems supporting improved building performance and diagnostics with an emphasis on energy management.

Increased β-cyanoalanine Nitrilase Activity Improves cyanide Tolerance and Assimilation in Arabidopsis

Plants naturally produce cyanide （cN） which is maintained at low levels in their cells by a process of rapid assimilation. However, high concentrations of environmental cN associated with activities such as industrial pollution are toxic to plants. There is thus an interest in increasing the cN detoxification capacity of plants as a potential route to phytoremediation. Here, Arabidopsis seedlings overexpressing the Pseudomonas fluorescens β-cyanoalanine nitrilase pinA were compared with wild-type and a β-cyanoalanine nitrilase knoc.out line （△Atnit4） for growth in the presence of exogenous cN. After incubation with cN, ＋PfpinA seedlings had increased root length, increased fresh weight, and decreased leaf bleaching compared with wild-type, indicating increased cN tolerance. The increased tolerance was achieved without an increase in β-cyanoalanine synthase activity, the other enzyme in the cyanide assimilation pathway, suggesting that nitrilase activity is the limiting fac.or for cyanide detoxification. Labeling experiments with [^13c] KcN demonstrated that the altered cN tolerance could be explained by differences in flux from cN to Asn caused by altered β-cyanoalanine nitrilase activity. Metabolite profiling after cN treatment provided new insight into downstream metabolism, revealing onward metabolism of Asn by the photorespiratory nitrogen cycle and accumulation of aromatic amino acids.

Tumour induced osteomalacia due to a sinonasal hemangiopericytoma:A case report

Tumour induced osteomalacia(TIo) is a rare and often unrecognized cause of hypophosphatemia. We report on a case of TIo due to a hemangiopericytoma originating from the left nasal sinus. The patient was a 55-year-old male with a 3-year history of left hip pain and an undisplaced left hip fracture. Biochemical testing demonstrated low levels of serum phosphate and serum 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, and an elevated level of fibroblast growth fac.or 23. octreotide scanning demonstrated uptake in the left nasal sinus area and a computed tomography scan revealed a left nasal sinus mass. The patient underwent surgical resection of the mass and histology was consistent with a sinonasal hemangiopericytoma. His serum phosphate levels normalized almost immediately after surgery and he had complete resolution of hip pain. our case highlights the importance of considering TIo when assessing patients with low serum phosphate.

Exploring the metamorphic consequences of secular change in the siliciclastic compositions of continental margins

Shale and greywacke compositions from the Archean to Phanerozoic record a secular change in the siliciclastic material that comprises much of Earth＇s continental margins, past and present. This study explores the metamorphic consequence of these compositional changes, by comparing phase equilibrium models constructed for average Archean, Proterozoic, and Phanerozoic shale and greywacke compositions equilibrated along two Barrovian-type geotherms： 1330℃/GPa（A） and 800 ℃/GPa（B）. our models show that Archean siliciclastic rocks can retain up to 4 vol.% water at middle to lower crustal conditions, nearly twice that of Proterozoic and Phanerozoic compositions. The increased ferromagnesium content of Archean siliciclastic rocks stabilizes chlorite to higher temperatures and results in a biotite-rich assemblage at solidus temperatures. Ac.ordingly, water-absent biotite dehydration melting is predicted to play a greater role in the generation of melt in the metamorphism of Archean aged units,and water-absent muscovite dehydration melting is of increasing importance through the Proterozoic and Phanerozoic. This secular variation in predicted mineral assemblages demonstrates the care with which metamorphic facies diagrams should be applied to Archean compositions. Moreover, secular changes in the composition of shale and greywacke is reflected in the evolution of anatectic melt towards an increasingly less viscous, ca-rich, and Mg-poor monzogranite.
