In this work,we report long-term trends in the abundance and breeding performance of Adélie penguins(Pygoscelis adeliae)nesting in three Antarctic colonies(i.e.,at Martin Point,South Orkneys Islands;Stranger Point/cabo Funes,South Shetland Islands;and Esperanza/Hope Bay in the Antarctic Peninsula)from 1995/96 to 2022/*** yearly count data of breeding groups selected,we observed a decline in the number of breeding pairs and chicks in crèche at all colonies ***,the magnitude of change was higher at Stranger Point than that in the remaining ***,the index of breeding success,which was calculated as the ratio of chicks in crèche to breeding pairs,exhibited no apparent trend throughout the study ***,it displayed greater variability at Martin Point compared to the other two colonies under *** the number of chicks in crèche of Adélie penguins showed a declining pattern,the average breeding performance was similar to that reported in gentoo penguin colonies,specifically,those undergoing a population increase(even in sympatric colonies facing similar local conditions).consequently,it is plausible to assume a reduction of the over-winter survival as a likely cause of the declining trend observed,at least in the Stranger Point and Esperanza ***,we cannot rule out local effects during the breeding season affecting the Adélie population of Martin Point.

The following paper reports on a comparative study of the effects of two types of carbon nanotubes,namely multiwall(MWcNT)and single-wall(SWcNT)carbon nanotube,on the properties of 3D-printed parts produced with acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene(ABS)nanocomposites with various cNT loadings of5-10 wt.%.Quasi-static tensile properties and Vicat softening temperature of 3D-printed parts were enhanced with the increasing cNT *** highest enhancement in tensile properties was observed for the ABS/cNT nanocomposites at 10 wt.%filler loading.3D-printed ABS/SWcNT composites showed higher tensile modulus,better creep stability and higher Vicat ***,the strength of ABS/SWcNT 3D samples is relatively lower than that of ABS/*** addition,3D-printed parts exhibited anisotropic electrical conductive behaviour,which has a conductivity of through-layer of about2-3 orders of magnitude higher than *** highest conductivity of 3D-printed samples reached25.2 S/m,and 9.3 S/m for ABS/MWcNT and ABS/SWcNT composites at 10 wt.%,*** results obtained,*** successful fuse filament fabrication and the consequent electromechanical properties,confirm that these 3D printable nanocomposite could be properly utilized for the production,and application up to about 90°c,of thermoelectric devices and/or resistors for flexible circuits.

Study of polygalacturonase production by an Antarctic yeast and obtention of dragon fruit juice by maceration at mild temperature

The objectives of the present survey were to study the production and the biochemical characterization of an enzymatic cold-active extract with polygalacturonase activity,to perform a first insight into its possible application in fruit-juice obtention process,and to use this juice for food products *** enzymatic extract was produced by the Antarctic yeast Mrakia *** January 7,2016 in a bioreactor with citric pectin as *** polygalacturonase activity showed optimum conditions for reaction at 45◦c and pH *** activity was stable until 40◦c but deactivated at higher *** by Hg+2 suggested the presence of a thiol-dependent enzyme.A high-molecular polygalacturonase was detected in an SDS-PAGE and zymography ***-products were observed by thin-layer chromatography and suggested the endo-mode of *** enzymatic extract had some accessory enzymes,such as pectin methylesterase,β-glucosidase,cellulase and *** a first insight into the potential use of this enzymatic extract for fruit maceration at mild temperatures,red and white dragon fruits were selected as *** 23◦c,juice yields of 15%-23%higher than control were obtained after treatments,with a decrease of remanent solid of 25%-35%.The color of red dragon fruit juice increased with enzymatic *** balls that were prepared with the juices demonstrated a hardness of~10 *** compression force of low-calorie sugar gels was 3.8 *** work provided a complete study of the production,characterization,application and food product production using a new cold-active polygalacturonase extract of Antarctic origin.

Body temperature,activity patterns and hunting in free-living cheetah:biologging reveals new insights

As one of the few felids that is predominantly diurnal,cheetahs(Acinonyx jubatus)can be exposed to high heat loads in their natural *** is known about long-term patterns of body temperature and activity(including hunting)in cheetahs because long-term concurrent measurements of body temperature and activity have never been reported for cheetahs,or,indeed,for any free-living *** report here body temperature and locomo-tor activity measured with implanted data loggers over 7 months in 5 free-living cheetahs in *** tem-perature ranged from a maximum of 39°c in summer to−2°c in *** had higher(~0.4°c)max-imum 24-h body temperatures,later acrophase(~1 h),with larger fluctuations in the range of the 24-h body temperature rhythm(approximately 0.4°c)during a hot-dry period than during a cool-dry period,but main-tained homeothermy irrespective of the climatic *** ambient temperatures increased,the cheetahs shifted from a diurnal to a crepuscular activity pattern,with reduced activity between 900 and 1500 hours and increased nocturnal *** timing of hunts followed the general pattern of activity;the cheetahs hunted when they were on the *** hunted if an opportunity presented itself;on occasion they hunted in the midday heat or in total darkness(new moon).Biologging revealed insights into cheetah biology that are not ac-cessible by traditional observer-based techniques.

Isolation by phage display and characterization of a single-chain antibody specific for O^6-methyldeoxyguanosine

New approaches of making single chain Fv antibodies against O6-methyl-2’ -deoxyguanosine (O6MdG) have been demonstrated by using the phage antibody display system. Using O6MdG as an antigen, 21 positive clones were identified by ELISA from this library, one of which, designated H3, specifically binds to O6MdG with high affinity. The H3 scFv antibody has an affinity constant (Kaff) of 5.94×1011(mol/L)-1. H3 scFv has been successfully used to detect O6MdG in DNA hydrolyses from yeast or E. coli cells treated with a DNA methylating agent. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the selection of a specific scFv against DNA adducts. The results demonstrate the potential applications of the phage display technology for the detection of DNA lesions caused by mutagens and carcinogens.

A cosmic Dimension： c. S. Lewis＇s Engagement with the Politics of Power and the challenge of Jesus

This paper focuses on some literary expressions of the role of faith in our engagement with things political from the pen of c. S. Lewis, whose writings are distinguished by a combination of intellectual force and imaginative flair. In an increasingly secular climate, he sought to bring God back into the equation, and it is not surprising to find some current issues addressed within his imaginative representations of a vibrant spiritual reality. His ideas and ideology are inextricably linked to his christian faith. Several critical essays reflect his interest in both theology and political issues including： the ethical use of technology, civil liberties, ecology, pacifism, and animal rights. This material forms the layers of his science-fiction trilogy which includes themes of spiritual warfare, factions, faith, and a fairy tale ending. His theology was not confined to the disciplines of a particular school of thought and his approach to things political follows no party line. His critical essays and stories are concerned with the practicalities of life, but are never reduced to a merely social gospel; they always have a cosmic dimension.

Midwifery Students’ confidence in New-Born care at completion of Training in Selected Midwifery Schools in Zambia. A Multicentric Study: A case of Zambia

Background: Quality education is one of the important factors in empowering midwives to provide quality health care services to mothers and newborns irrespective of their practice settings. Due to lack of standardization of the duration, content, and structure of midwifery education and different pathways to midwifery across the world, midwives may lack the confidence to deliver quality health care services in the main domain of the IcM competences. Aim: To assess the confidence of final year midwifery students in the domain of new-born care based on the IcM midwifery competencies. Methods: The first phase consisted of a quick situation analysis of midwifery education and regulation in Zambia, followed by a cross-sectional survey through a self-administered questionnaire to assess the confidence of final year midwifery students. Results: Most (51.9%) of the respondents were aged between 18 and 28 years, and majority of them were placed in Levels 1, 2 and 3 Hospitals and also clinics for their clinical practice, with between one hundred to ten thousand annual births, followed by 16.9% who were placed in Level 3 hospitals only. Most students (38.3%) reported receiving classroom instruction by both Lecture and Demonstration. Few students (22.7%) responded that they were not satisfied with their clinical supervision, while 77.3% were satisfied. There was significant association between confidence to perform skills independently and having enough time to practice on models in the labs (p value = 0.024), confidence when practiced for the first time on mothers (p value = 0.007) and satisfaction with supervision during clinical practice (p value = 0.000). Binary logistic regression of characteristics associated with confidence to perform new-born skills independently revealed significant association between satisfaction with clinical supervision and confidence to perform skills independently, 95% cI [1.83,

Objective: This study examined the perceptions and practices of medical personnel regarding the spirituality in the treatment management plan of their patients. Methods: A spirituality survey was administered to doctors and nurses, soliciting responses about their beliefs and willingness to include spirituality practices in treating patients within their facility. Respondents were asked to give their views on daily practices regarding the use of spirituality in patient care and patient response to treatment. Results: The doctors’ responses suggest that they believe that solutions to medical problems, patient recovery, and coping are related to mind and body stress issues that surgery and drugs may not necessarily cure. The emphasis on self-care for some of these medical problems can put the patient back in control and eliminate the use of excessive drugs in the treatment process. chances for health and well being of patients are improved if good medical practices are combined with a strong mental and psychological disposition to provide a vital foundation for directly confronting diseases. conclusion: Spiritual engagement helps to support a psychological outlook that is necessary for fighting diseases and coping adequately with life’s tragedies. This approach provides a well-balanced attack on disease and increases the patient’s chances of coping and surviving.

Histopathological characteristics and causes of kidney graft failure in the current era of immunosuppression

In this study, we present our experience working with kidney transplant recipients with graft failure within one year of the *** To report the histopathological characteristics of failed kidney allografts in the current era of immunosuppression based on the time after transplant, cause of the end-stage renal disease and induction immunosuppressive *** In a single-center observational study, we characterized the histopathological findings of allograft biopsies in kidney transplant recipients with graft failure within one year after the *** We identified 329 patients with graft failure that met the selection criteria between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2016. The three most common biopsy findings were interstitial fibrosis and tubular atrophy(IFTA, 53%), acute rejection (AR, 43%) and transplant glomerulopathy(TG, 33%). Similarly, the three most common causes of graft failure based on the primary diagnosis were AR(40%),TG(17%), and IFTA(13%). Most grafts failed within two years of post-transplant(36%). Subsequently, approximately 10%-15% of grafts failed every two years: >2-4 years(16%), > 4-6 years(13%), > 6-8 years(11%), > 8-10 years(9%) and > 10 years(16%). AR was the most common cause of graft failure in the first six years(48%), whereas TG was the most prevalent cause of graft failure after 6 years(32%) of *** In the current era of immunosuppression, AR is still the most common cause of early graft failure, while TG is the most prevalent cause of late graft failure.

Immigration to the US: The Insidious Health Risk Factor

US Latinos experience higher rates of obesity than their non-Latino counterparts. Factors associated with immigration, including length of residence in the United States, are associated with an increased risk of obesity. Latino community health workers (cHWs) work closely with communities, and are in an ideal position to provide insight on the underlying mechanisms of the Latino obesity epidemic. Focus groups were conducted with 15 cHWs and thematic analyses were performed to explore elements associated with obesity among Latino immigrants. Emergent themes included: reduction in physical activity due to less walkable spaces, more transportation options, and busier schedules in the United States. Interviewees also identified a sudden increase in access to unhealthy food and an abrupt reduction in access to, and affordability of, healthy food choices upon immigration. culturally appropriate interventions to increase awareness of these factors and neutralize their effects among early Latino immigrants are recommended.
