Dewlap size in male water anoles associates with consistent inter-individual variation in boldness

Male sexually selected signals can indicate competitive ability by honestly signaling fitnessrelevant traits such as condition or performance. However, behavior can also influence contest outcomes;in particular, boldness often predicts dominance rank and mating success. Here, we sought to determi ne whether male ornament size is associated with consiste nt in dividual differences in boldness in water anoles Anol is aquaticus. We measured the relative size of the dewlap, a flap of skin under the chin that is a sexually selected ornament in Anolis lizards, and tested for associations with responses to a novel and potentially risky environment: time to emerge from a refuge into an arena and number of head sea ns post-emergence. We found that in dividuals con siste ntly differed in both time to emerge and head sea nning (i.e., in dividual resp on ses were repeatable), and that dewlap size was negatively related to nu mber of head sea ns. This suggests that orname nt size could indicate male boldness if seanning represents antipredator vigilance. We found that males that had larger relative dewlaps were also in better body condition, but boldness (i.e., head scann ing) was not related to condition. Lastly, we found con siste nt d iff ere nces in behavior betwee n trials, showing that anoles were becoming habituated or sensitized to the testing arena. Overall, our study shows that in additi on to indicating con dition and perform a nee, dewlap size could also honestly indicate male boldness in Anolis lizards.

Effect of low versus high frequency stimulation on freezing of gait and other axial symptoms in Parkinson patients with bilateral STN DBS:a mini-review

Some studies have shown that low frequency stimulation(LFS,most commonly 60 Hz),compared to high frequency stimulation(HFS,most commonly 130 Hz),has beneficial effects,short-term or even long-term,on improving freezing of gait(FOG)and other axial symptoms,including speech and swallowing function,in Parkinson disease(PD)patients with bilateral subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation(STN DBS).However,other studies failed to confirm *** seems not clear what determines the difference in response to *** in study design,such as presence or absence of FOG,exact LFS used(60 Hz versus 80 Hz),study size,open label versus randomized double blind assessment,retrospective versus prospective evaluation,medication On or Off state,total electric energy delivered maintained or not with the change in frequency,and the location of active contacts could all potentially affect the *** mini-review goes over the literature with the aforementioned factors in mind,focusing on the effect of LFS versus HFS on FOG and other axial symptoms in PD with bilateral STN DBS,in an effort to extract the essential data to guide our clinical management of axial symptoms and explore the potential underlying mechanisms as ***,LFS of 60 Hz seems to be consistently effective in patients with FOG at the usual HFS in regards to improving FOG,speech,swallowing function and other axial symptoms,though LFS could reduce tremor control in some *** LFS simply addresses the axial symptoms in the context of HFS or has other beneficial effects requires further studies,along with the mechanism.

The ability of skeletal muscle to regenerate from injury is crucial for locomotion,metabolic health,and quality of *** proliferator-activated receptor-γcoactivator-1α(PGC1A)is a transcriptional coactivator required for mitochondrial *** mitochondrial biogenesis is associated with improved muscle cell differentiation,however PGC1A's role in skeletal muscle regeneration following damage requires further *** purpose of this study was to investigate the role of skeletal muscle-specific PGC1A overexpression during regeneration following damage.22 C57BL/6j(WT)and 26 PGC1A muscle transgenic(A1)mice were injected with either phosphate-buffered saline(PBS,uninjured control)or Bupivacaine(MAR,injured)into their tibialis anterior(TA)muscle to induce skeletal muscle *** muscles were extracted 3-or 28-days postinjury and analyzed for markers of regenerative myogenesis and protein ***1a mRNA was~10–20 fold greater in A1 *** of protein synthesis,AKT and 4EBP1,displayed decreases in A1 mice compared to WT at both timepoints indicating a decreased protein synthetic *** mRNA was~75%lower compared to WT 3 days *** mice exhibited decreased cross-sectional area of the TA muscle at 28 days post-injection with bupivacaine compared to all other ***1A overexpression modifies the myogenic response during regeneration.
