Assisted Revegetation Following Contaminated Site Remediation in the Arctic: Four-Year Case Study of a Former Radar Site

Cape Dyer (DYE-m), located on the easternmost point of Baffin Island, is a former DEW line radar station built in 1956-57 which was upgraded in 1993 as part of the current North Warning System. Environmental studies in the late 1990s and early 2000s determined that extensive soil contamination existed across the site, and excavation of six landfills and subsequent reshaping of the area in 2008 disturbed approximately 19,700 m2. A four-year pilot project was conducted between 2009 and 2012 to investigate feasibility of, and determine methods to, accelerate revegetation of the disturbed area through assisted seed dispersal of native and non native species and selective transplantation of slow-growing shrub species. Prior to revegetation efforts, plant surveys conducted in July 2009 determined that 15 species were present in the undisturbed areas, of which Salix arctica (~11%), Vaccinium uliginosum L. (~8%), and Empetrum nigrum L. (~5%) were the predominant species. A total of 14 species (three new) were observed growing on the disturbed areas between 2010 and 2012. The majority of Lolium multiflorum (annual ryegrass) seeds planted as a nurse species in 2009 grew in 2010, but most were stunted and only observed in furrows or sheltered areas at a low density. Salix arctica Pall. (willow) cuttings planted in “islands” of 20-30 cuttings in fall 2009 had a three-year survival rate of 82%, while a second set of cuttings planted in fall 2011 had a one-year survival rate of 93%. Visual observations indicate that patches of new vegetation are becoming more predominant on the disturbed area, especially around the willow islands, indicating the importance of microtopography for successful reclamation in arctic environments. monitoring over ten or more years will be required to determine the long term success of this project.

AIm: To evaluate and validate the national trends and predictors of in-patient mortality of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) in 15 ***: Using the National Inpatient Sample which is a part of Health Cost and Utilization Project, we identified a discharge-weighted national estimate of 83884 TIPS procedures performed in the United States from 1998 to 2012 using international classification of diseases-9 procedural code 39.1. The demographic, hospital and co-morbility data were analyzed using a multivariant analysis. Using multi-nominal logistic regression analysis, we determined predictive factors related to increases in-hospital mortality. Comorbidity measures are in accordance to the Comorbidity Software designed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and ***: Overall, 12.3% of patients died during hospitalization with downward trend in-hospital mortality with the mean length of stay of 10.8 ± 13.1 d. Notable, African American patients (OR = 1.809 vs Caucasian patients, P mergency admissions (OR = 3.032 vs elective cases, P mortality. Number of diagnoses and number of procedures showed positive correlations with in-hospital death (OR = 1.249 per one increase in number of procedures). Patients diagnosed with acute respiratory failure (OR = 8.246), acute kidney failure (OR = 4.359), hepatic encephalopathy (OR = 2.217) and esophageal variceal bleeding (OR = 2.187) were at considerably higher odds of in-hospital death compared with ascites (OR = 0.136, P morbidity measures with the highest odds of in-hospital death were fluid and electrolyte disorders (OR = 2.823), coagulopathy (OR = 2.016), and lymphoma (OR = 1.842).CONCLUSION: The overall mortality of the TIPS procedure is stea

This paper presents the numerical investigation of the distribution of inertial sediment particles in the turbulent boundary layer of an open channel flow with the particle Stokes number ranging from 0.6 to 20.4. The methodology is a combination of three numerical approaches, i.e. direct numerical simulation of turbulent flow, the point-particle immersed boundary method, and the discrete particle method. By applying the Vorono analysis, the preferential concentration characteristics of sediment particles were investigated quantitatively. It was found that the normalized area of the Voronoi cells follows a lognormal particle distribution. The inertial sediment particles distributed unevenly in the turbulent boundary layer and the unevenness, governed by the particle Stokes number, was more significant as the particle Stokes number approaches unity. The inertial sediment particles in the turbulent boundary layer accumulated preferentially in streamwise-aligned streaky structures and this pattern was less significant with increasing particle Stokes number.

The City of Austin is among the fastest-growing cities in the U.S.,with the surrounding counties keeping a similar *** times from downtown Austin to Round Rock,where many commuters live,currently range from 45 to 60 minutes during the average afternoon rush ***-makers have expressed a need to examine long-term solutions for IH 35 to explore concepts discussed under previous *** study applied dynamic traffic assignment coupled with static and dynamic tolling analysis,user class restrictions and multi-class simulation and assignment to examine various long-term scenarios with potential to address growing congestion on this critical *** findings were illuminating:if residential and employment growth continue on their current pace through 2035,the region wide dynamic traffic assignment results applied at the mesoscopic level in this study demonstrate that Central Texas faces a grim future of extreme traffic congestion on IH *** an added capacity scenario was identified which can address future IH 35 congestion in some instances,it is of questionable viability for *** scenario with the largest capacity addition did not provide the best results due to limited accessibility and only when the limits were extended dramatically,did researchers find more positive congestion ***,this scenario would be the highest investment and would probably be deemed infeasible simply due to cost.A more positive finding was that a hybrid strategy of added capacity,dynamic tolling,and travel demand management solutions demonstrates even greater *** all options were considered,it was realized that added capacity would not be enough;it would need to be coupled with managed lanes,changes in travel behavior,more efficient land use,demand management and increased transit use.

Background:We sought to assess the overall benefit of laparoscopic versus open hepatectomy for treatment of colorectal liver metastases(CRLms)using the win ratio,a novel methodological ***:CRLm patients undergoing curative-intent resection in 2001-2018 were identified from an international multi-institutional *** were paired and matched based on age,number and size of lesions,lymph node status and receipt of preoperative *** win ratio was calculated based on margin status,severity of postoperative complications,90-day mortality,time to recurrence,and time to ***:Among 962 patients,the majority underwent open hepatectomy(n=832,86.5%),while a minority underwent laparoscopic hepatectomy(n=130,13.5%).Among matched patient-to-patient pairs,the odds of the patient undergoing laparoscopic resection“winning”were 1.77[WR:1.77,95%confidence interval(CI):1.42-2.34].The win ratio favored laparoscopic hepatectomy independent of low(WR:2.94,95%CI:1.20-6.39),medium(WR:1.56,95%CI:1.16-2.10)or high(WR:7.25,95%CI:1.13-32.0)tumor burden,as well as unilobar(WR:1.71,95%CI:1.25-2.31)or bilobar(WR:4.57,95%CI:2.36-8.64)*** odds of“winning”were particularly pronounced relative to short-term outcomes(i.e.,90-day mortality and severity of postoperative complications)(WR:4.06,95%CI:2.33-7.78).Conclusions:Patients undergoing laparoscopic hepatectomy had 77%increased odds of“winning”.Laparoscopic liver resection should be strongly considered as a preferred approach to resection in CRLm patients.

Increasing electrode thickness can substantially enhance the specific energy of lithium-ion batteries;however,ionic transport,electronic conductivity,and ink rheology are current barriers to ***,a novel approach using a mixed xanthan gum and locust bean gum binder to construct ultrathick electrodes is proposed to address above *** combining aqueous binder with single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWCNT),active material(LiNi_(0.8)Co_(0.1)mn_(0.1)O_(2)) and subsequent vacuum freeze-drying,highly aligned,and low-tortuosity structures with a porosity of ca.50%can be achieved with an average pore size of 10μm,whereby the gum binder-SWCNT-NmC811 forms vertical structures supported by tissue-like binder/SWCNT networks allowing for excellent electronic conducting phase *** a result,ultra-thick electrodes with a mass loading of about 511 mg cm^(−2) and 99.5 wt%active materials have been demonstrated with a remarkable areal capacity of 79.3 mAh cm^(−2),which is the highest value reported so *** represents a>25×improvement compared with conventional electrodes with an areal capacity of about 3 mAh cm^(−2).This route also can be expanded to other electrode materials,such as LiFePO_(4) and Li_(4)Ti_(5)O_(12),and thus opens the possibility for low-cost and sustainable ultra-thick electrodes with increased specific energy for future lithium-ion batteries.
