Beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) is a low molecular weight polypeptide (11,800 da) that exists in a free form and a form bound to cell membranes (light chains of HLA class I molecules). Their dosage is used in the exploration and monitoring of renal function in haemodialysis patients, hence the interest of this study, the objective of which is to study the different players involved in the increase of beta-2-microglobulin. Materials and Methods: This was a prospective and descriptive study from January 1st, 2017 to August 31, 2017 (08 months). All patients with chronic hemodialysis for 3 years or more were included. We analyzed sociodemographic, clinical and paraclinical data. Results: We collected 50 patients. The mean age was 50 ± 4.6 years with extremes of 30 and 82 years. The female sex predominated (52%). Chronic end-stage renal failure was hypertensive (86%), diabetic (4%). All patients benefited from intermittent hemodialysis for 8 hours per week using a low permeability membrane (cuprophane). The average duration of hemodialysis was 68 ± 6.4 months with extremes of 36 and 204 months. Twenty percent (20%) and four percent (4%) of chronic dialysis patients had joint pain and sensory deficit. Phalen’s sign was positive in 2% (1 case), Tinel’s sign in 2% (1 case) and carpal tunnel syndrome in 2% (1 case). The mean serum beta-2-microglobulin level was 58.34 ng/l with extremes of 16.99 and 112.24 ng/l. There was a correlation between hypertensive nephropathies and beta-2-microglobulin levels above 50 ng/l (P Conclusion: Our study has objectified factors such as inadequate dialysis (8 hours/week), use of low permeability membrane in the increase of beta-2-microglobulin. The increase in serum beta-2-microglobulin levels in our patients is evidence of poor purification of medium molecules. Kidney damage during Sharp’s Syndrome: About Two Cases

Context: The coexistence in the same patient of a mixed connectivitis or Sharp’s syndrome is a rare eventuality. Objective: To underline the presence of this mixed connectivitis in our practice, whose prevalence remains unknown, particularly in Africa and more precisely in Mali. Case Presentations: We report two cases of Sharp’s syndrome in a 48-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman with impaired renal function. The picture achieved associated massive proteinuria, hypoalbuminemia, moderate renal failure and edematous syndrome in men. In women, the picture was associated with accelerated to malignant hypertension and severe renal failure. There were no osteoarticular manifestations and the diagnosis of Sharp’s syndrome was based on the presence of high levels of antibodies to U1RNP. Therapeutic management has been that of predominantly associated connective tissue disease (systemic lupus erythematosus). Conclusion: Mixed connectivitis or Sharp’s syndrome is increasingly recognized as a separate entity thanks to advances in molecular biology. Its prevalence is low in sub-Saharan African countries with renal disease that manifests itself as proteinuria or nephrotic syndrome associated with microscopic hematuria, renal failure, and hypertension. This renal impairment is more likely to occur in severe forms of the disease.

Effect of Planting date on Yield and Yield Components of Grain Sorghum Hybrids

In Kansas, productivity of grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] is affected by weather conditions at planting and during pollination. Planting date management and selection of hybrid maturity group can help to avoid severe environmental stresses during these sensitive stages. The hypothesis of the study was that late May planting improves grain sorghum yield and yield components compared with late June planting. The objectives of this research were to investigate the influence of planting dates yield and yield components of different grain sorghum hybrids, and to determine the optimal planting date and hybrid combination for maximum biomass and grains production. Three sorghum hybrids (early, medium, and late maturing) were planted in late May and late June without irrigation in Kansas at Manhattan/Ashland Bottom Research Station, and Hutchinson in 2010;and at Manhattan/North Farm and Hutchinson in 2011. data on dry matter production, yield and yield components were collected. Grain yield and yield components were influenced by planting date depending on environmental conditions. At Manhattan (2010), greater grain yield, number of heads per plant, were obtained with late-June planting compared with late May planting, while at Hutchinson (2010) greater yield was obtained with late May planting for all hybrids. The yield component most affected at Hutchinson was the number of kernels∙panicle−1 and plant density. Late-May planting was favorable for late maturing hybrid (P84G62) in all locations. However, the yield of early maturing hybrid (dKS 28-05) and medium maturing hybrid (dKS 37-07) was less affected by delayed planting. The effects of planting dates on yield and yield components of grain sorghum hybrids were found to be variable among hybrid maturity groups and locations.

A Hybrid Learning Algorithm for Breast Cancer diagnosis

In many fields, particularly that of health, the diagnosis of diseases is a very difficult task to carry out. Therefore, early detection of diseases using artificial intelligence tools can be of paramount importance in the medical field. In this study, we proposed an intelligent system capable of performing diagnoses for radiologists. The support system is designed to evaluate mammographic images, thereby classifying normal and abnormal patients. The proposed method (diagBC for Breast Cancer diagnosis) combines two (2) intelligent unsupervised learning algorithms (the C-Means clustering algorithm and the Gaussian Mixture Model) for the segmentation of medical images and an algorithm for supervised learning (a modified denseNet) for the diagnosis of breast images. Ultimately, a prototype of the proposed system was implemented for the Magori Polyclinic in Niamey (Niger) making it possible to diagnose (or classify) breast cancer into two (2) classes: the normal class and the abnormal class.

Field and Laboratory Study of Accumulated debrisflow-Forming Solid Mass Sediment on the Example of River Chokheltkhevi (Mtskheta-Mtianeti Region, Georgia)

The paper presents the results of the field and laboratory research carried out in the Chokheltkhevi river basin, according to which the sediment-forming solid mass accumulated in the bed of the Chokhelthkhevi river was recorded and its granulometric and chemical composition, as well as physical-mechanical characteristics, were studied. Based on the results of the research, it can be said that in the debrisflow channel of the Chokheltkhevi River, coarse and sandy-clay soils are mainly accumulated, which represent an unstable mass for the expected debrisflow in the gorge, which, together with other geological, hydrological and climatic factors, helps to increase the scale of the expected ecological danger. According to the results of the laboratory research, it can be concluded that the soil accumulated in the drainage channel is low in ion concentration, and the humus content in it is minimal, which indicates the possibility of easy displacement of the solid mass accumulated in the drainage channel and, accordingly, the risk of a catastrophic debrisflow.

Manufacture of Industrial Refractory Crucibles Based on Clays from Burkina Faso

In Burkina Faso, one of the three largest gold producers in West Africa, foundry activity is often paralyzed when basic equipment such as crucibles and cups are not available or should be imported. However, previous studies have shown the availability of kaolinite-rich clay resources that could be used for the local manufacture of silico-aluminous ceramic crucibles. This work allowed to manufacture industrial ceramic crucibles with local clays and then they were tested in foundry industry. The materials were manufactured from three (03) raw materials including two clays (SAB and ROU) and sand. The chemical and mineral analysis has shown that the raw materials are suitable for the formulation of refractory materials. The results of characterization of the materials formulated showed that the properties of use are appreciable. The porosity of the materials is relatively low (23 - 28 vol%) with a diametral compressive strength between 0.61 and 1.34 MPa. Crucibles sintered at 1250˚C with a stay of 2 hours have a mechanical strength capable of supporting the weight of the ores contained. These crucibles have a refractoriness under load (T0.5) above 1141˚C and resist chemical attacks. Tests were carried out in the industry at 1100˚C, and the results were satisfactory.

In the tropics, lowland rice cultivation is often confronted with the problem of iron toxicity. The solution proposed by research in general is the use of industrial silicon. However, the high cost of industrial silicon limits its adoption by farmers. A study was carried out in Zakogbeu;Center-West of Côte d’Ivoire, to assess the potential of kaolin to mitigate the effect of this soil constraint on the root of the rice plant. Five kaolin-based treatments were analyzed (T0 = 0 kg kaolin ha−1, T1 = 366 kg kaolin ha−1, T2 = 736 kg kaolin ha−1, T3 = 1097 kg kaolin ha−1 and T4 = 1465 kg kaolin ha−1 are 0, 200, 400, 600 and 800 kg SiO2 ha−1) in a device in complete random blocks, with 5 repetitions. The results obtained show that kaolin supply increases the length of the root tissue as well as the number of branching of the root of the rice plant. Root tissue increased from 10 cm with T0 treatment to more than 15 cm with treatment T4. The microscopic observation of the roots shows that in the treatment T0, the roots present only primary ramifications and the tertiary and quaternary ramifications are observed with the treatments T3 and T4. The contribution of kaolin is an alternative to inhibit the effect of iron toxicity on the rice plant root development in iron toxicity condition.

In Côte d’Ivoire, the decline in soil fertility strongly impacts the productivity of maize (Zea mays L.) on heavily leached ferralitic soil. In this study, the general objective was therefore to improve the productivity of maize EV87-28 on the Ferralsols in pre-forested areas during different cropping seasons. Eight (8) micro-plots were set up according to a total randomization device with three repetitions. Two factors were studied: nitrogen fertilizer modalities (main factor) and crop season (secondary factor). Growth, flowering and yield parameters were measured and analyzed. The results showed that there was no interaction between the nitrogen fertilizer factor and the cropping season factor. In addition, this study showed the short rainy season had the most positive impact on growth, flowering and yield parameters than the long rainy season. The results also showed that the different nitrogen fertilizer modalities had no statistically different effects on growth, flowering and yield parameters. However, quantitative differences were reported, highlighting one nitrogen fertilizer modality, which is the combination of urea granule + farm manure (75% urea indorama granules and 25% farm manure). The combination of urea granule + farm manure (75% urea indorama granules and 25% farm manure) had the best effect on corn grain yield. So, the combination of urea (75%) and manure (25%), that resulted in yield gain, could be recommended for corn fertilization during the small rainy season.

Effects of Calcium and Magnesium on Phosphorus Availability in Ferralsols and Rice Production in Forest Zones of Côte d’Ivoire

Phosphorus bioavailability has long been a recurring problem in tropical acid soils. A pot experiment was carried out during three (3) successive rice production cycles at Adiopodoumé to evaluate the response of the NERICA 5 rice accession to various doses of calcium, magnesium and phosphorous. The experiment was conducted using a randomized split-plot design. The interactive effects of calcium carbonate (0, 25, 50 and 75 kg·Ca·ha-1) and magnesium sulfate (0, 25, 50 and 75 kg·Mg·ha-1) and Togo natural phosphate (0, 25, 50 and 75 kg·P·ha-1) were determined at each production cycle. The results showed that single-dose natural phosphate supplementation for three cropping cycles resulted in an average enrichment of around 2 mg·P·kg-1 after each trial following its continuous dissolution, with an increase in dSP (33.31% to 70.52%). The study revealed one strategy for managing and enhancing native P with cations and another for exogenous P: there would be a synergy of Ca/Mg on native P, whereas an antagonism would characterize the two parameters in phosphate fertilization.
