The miR166-SIHB15A regulatory module controls ovule development and parthenocarpic fruit set under adverse temperatures in tomato

Fruit set is inhibited by adverse temperatures,with consequences on yield.We isolated a tomato mutant producing fruits under non-permissive hot temperatures and identified the causal gene as SIHB15A,belonging to classⅢhomeodomain leucine-zipper transcription factors.SIHB15A,loss-of-function mu-tants display aberrant ovule development that mimics transcriptional changes occurring in fertilized ovules and leads to parthenocarpic fruit set under optimal and non-permissive temperatures,in field and greenhouse conditions.Under cold growing conditions,SIHB15A is subjected to conditional haploinsufficiency and recessive dosage sensitivity controlled by microRNA 166(miR166).Knockdown of SIHB15A alleles by miR166 leads to a continuum of aberrant ovules correlating with parthenocarpic fruit set.Consistent with this,plants harboring an Slhb15a-miRNA166-resisiant allele developed normal ovules and were unable to set parthenocarpic fruit under cold conditions.DNA affinity purification sequencing and RNA-sequencing analyses revealed that SIHB15A is a bifunctional transcription factor expressed in the ovule integument.SIHB15A binds to the promoters of auxin-related genes to repress auxin signaling and to the promoters of ethylene-related genes to activate their expression.A survey of tomato genetic biodiversity identified pat and pat-1,two historical parthenocarpic mutants,as alleles of SIHB15A.Taken together,our findings demonstrate the role of SIHB15A as a sentinel to prevent fruit set in the absence of fertilization and provide a mean to enhance fruiting under extreme temperatures.

Keratoconus is a non-inflammatory disorder which is gradual in development;corneal thinning and ectatic protrusion characterizes it. Keratoconus prevalence varies between different regions depending on several factors that affecting its prevalence. There are risk factors for developing keratoconus such as demographic and environmental factors. It was suggested that eye rubbing was associated with the development of keratoconus. The main aim of this review was to summarize the literature data about keratoconus and to identify the role of eyerubbing in the aetiology of the disease. A number of 24 articles was reviewed through the Pub Med, Google Scholar and Research Gates. There are many keywords used such as keratoconus, aetiology of keratoconus, eye rubbing, keratoconus prevalence, keratoconus and eye rubbing correlation. We concluded that eye rubbing causes the thinning of keratocyte, and the degree of effect of eye rubbing depends on the period and force of performing eye rubbing. It is recommended to avoid eye rubbing to prevent keratoconus, this can be achieved by avoiding itching and treating dryness of the eye and avoiding wearing eye lenses.

Characterization of organic-rich mineral debris revealed by rapid glacier retreat, Indren Glacier, European Alps

In the summer of 2003 and 2004, characterized by a rapid glacier retreat, a stony surface covered by well-structured organic-rich mineral debris was observed very close to the Indren glacier terminus(Monte Rosa Massif, NW Italy, 3100 m ASL), on an area covered by the glacier tongue till the year before. The origin and type of this organicrich material were investigated, in order to detect their characteristics, potential sources and fate within the foreland system. The deposits were dated using Carbon-14 and analyzed for the chemical characteristics of the organic component, the elemental composition of the mineral fraction and presence of microbial markers. The material, granular and dark in color, had a total organic carbon(TOC) content ranging between 17.4 ± 0.39 and 28.1 ± 0.63 g kg^(-1) dry weight(dw), significantly higher than the surrounding glacial till(~ 1.4 g kg^(-1) dw), although only 0.33% of it was in water soluble form. Microbial carbon(C) and nitrogen(N) accounted for 10.6% and 3.13% of TOC and total N, respectively. Dissolved nitrogen(N), mainly present as ammonium, represented 2.40% of the total N. The low aromatic component and large presence of nitrogen(N)-derived compounds suggested that most of the organic carbon(OC) in these organic-rich mineral deposits was derived from microbial cells, although the high average radiocarbon age of about 2900 years may also point to the contribution of aeolian depositions of anthropogenic or natural origin. Elemental composition and the crustal enrichment factor of trace elements in the mineral fraction of the aggregates corroborated the hypothesis that most part of the accumulated material derived from ice meltwater. Some indicators of the colonization of these deposits by microbial communities were also reported, from the abundance of DNA and phylogenetic markers, to the presence of bacterial taxa commonly able to thrive in similar habitats. Semi-Empirical Oscillator Strengths and Lifetimes for the P IV Spectrum

In this work numerical codes carried out in a multiconfiguration Har-tree-Fock relativistic (HFR) approach for the P IV ion are used to obtain the oscillator strengths of each transition as well as the lifetimes of each energy level. With the existing data from several authors that contributed to the spectrum using different light sources, and optimizing the electrostatic parameters by a least-squares procedure when replacing the theoretical values by the experimental ones in the energy matrices, one obtains closer values and according to the observations for the intensities, and also of the lifetimes closer to those that would be obtained experimentally.

Patients with brain tumors,specifically,malignant forms such as glioblastoma,medulloblastoma and ependymoma,exhibit dismal survival rates despite advances in treatment strategies.Chemotherapeutics,the primary adjuvant treatment for human brain tumors following surgery,commonly lack efficacy due to either intrinsic or acquired drug resistance.New treatments targeting epigenetic factors are being explored.Post-translational histone modification provides a critical regulatory platform for processes such as chromosome condensation and segregation,apoptosis,gene transcription,and DNA replication and repair.This work reviews how aberrant histone modifications and alterations in histone-modifying enzymes can drive the acquisition of drug resistance in brain tumors.Elucidating these mechanisms should lead to new treatments for overcoming drug resistance.

Oscillator Strengths and Lifetimes for the P XIII Spectrum

The P XIII spectrum has been analyzed by several authors using different light sources. The semi-empirical oscillator strengths (gf) and the lifetimes presented in this work for all known P XIII spectral lines and energy levels were carried out in a multi-configuration Hartree-Fock relativistic (HFR) approach. In this calculation, the electrostatic parameters were optimized by a least-squares procedure in order to improve the adjustment of theoretical to experimental energy levels. The method produces gf-values that are in agreement with intensity observations and lifetime values closer to the experimental ones.

Verification of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point in Hotels and Catering Units: Evaluation of the Cleaning and Disinfection Procedures and Microbiological Monitoring of Hot and Cold Meals

The aim of the present study is to assess the efficacy of the methods used in a HACCP system by measuring the Total Viable Count (TVC) and Coliforms, after cleaning and disinfecting the surfaces used and also by monitoring TVC and enterobacteriaceae of hot and cold meals. In order to evaluate the appropriateness of the surfaces used, samples were obtained from kitchens of 37 Greek hotels/resorts, all of which operated a documented HACCP safety management scheme, while the samples of hot and cold meals were selected from the menu of a catering unit and collected from the actual point of hot and cold dishes banquette at the start time (time 0) and after 4 hours. The developed colonies were counted. The results showed that only 13.5% of the hotels presented surfaces without any TVC or coliforms and 86.5% of the hotels had surfaces with TVC or coliforms or both above the limits. However, 75.8% of the total surfaces examined were acceptable for TVC and 81.9% of the surfaces examined were coliforms. Our microbiological monitoring of food showed that the TVC content of hot meal samples after 4 hours of display (above 60℃) was not significantly different from the TVC content of the aforementioned samples at time 0, while in cold meals TVC and enterobacteriaceae content had significantly risen after 4 hours of display (below 5℃).Conclusively, insufficient application of disinfection and ineffective surface and equipment cleaning programs were found. Additionally, cold meals are more vulnerable than hot meals in developing TVC and enterobacteriaceae.
