Expression of s100B during the innate immune of corneal epithelium against fungi invasion

AIM： To explore the expression of sIOOB in corneal epithelial cells under ,Aspergillus stimulation both in vivo and in vitro. METHODs： Immortalized human corneal epithelial cells （HCECs） were exposed to inactive #lsperg///us fumigatus （A. fumigatus） conidia at 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, and 24h respectively. The corneas of Wistar rats were exposed to active A. fumigatus at 0, 12, 24, 48h and the normal rat corneas were used for normal control. The mRNA level of s100B was evaluated by real time quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction （qRT-PCR）. sl00B protein expression in cornea epithelium was detected by immunohistochemical/immunocytochemical staining （IHC/ICC）. REsULTs： Histopathology revealed a significant inflammatory cell infiltration in fungal keratitis human and rat cornea. Corneal epithelial cells didn＇t express or rarely express s100B at baseline. A. fumigatus significantly induced s100B mRNA expression in cultured corneal epithelial cells in a time depended manner in vitro the mRNA began to rise significantly at 8h in vitro （P〈0.05） and continue to rise as time prolonged （P〈0.01）. in vivo s100B mRNA level was low in the normal corneas. However, it was increased in keratitis corneas from 12h after infection （P〈0.05） and reached to a peak at 24h （P〈0.001）. Immunochemistry revealed an obvious staining in fungal keratitis corneas as well as immortalized HCECs compared to the normal ones respectively, indicating an increased expression of slOOB protein. CONCLUsION： s100B exists in corneal epithelial cells and is over-expressed under A. fumigatus stimulation. sl00B may play an important role in the innate immune response of the corneal epithelium during A. fumigatus infection.

An assessment of paleodepositional environment and maturity of organic matter in sediments of the setap shale and Belait formations in West sabah,East Malaysia by organic geochemical methods

The black shale samples collected from two Neogene formations in the Klias Peninsula area,West sabah,have been assessed and characterized in details by gas chromatography,gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and a variety of organic geochemical *** aims of this study are to describe the characteristics of organic matter of these sediments in terms of source/type of the organic matter,assess its thermal maturity and paleoenvironment of deposition,based primarily on biomarker *** results of both formations do not reveal significant differences within the rock *** gas chromatograms of the saturated hydrocarbon fractions of the setap shale and the Belait formations displayed monomodal n-alkane distributions and nearly identical regular sterane compositions with a predominance of C27 regular *** are consistent with open marine depositional environments dominated by marine biological *** related feature of these rock extracts is the presence of a high relative abundance of gammacerane,indicating anoxic marine hypersaline source depositional *** relatively high abundance of common land plant-derived biomarkers,such as bicadinanes and oleananes,is a clear indication of a major terrigenous input to the source of the extractable organic *** predominance of oleanane biomarkers in both formations is indicative of angiospermis input and Tertiary source *** high C29/C30 hopane ratios,moderate development of C33-C35 hopanes,high abundance of tricyclic terpanes and a slight predominance of C27 regular sterane over C28 and C29 steranes are characteristic features tending to suggest a significant marine influence on these source rocks,thereby suggesting a mixed source *** 22s/(22s+22R)C32 hopane ratio has reached equilibrium,and this is supported by the high maturity level as indicated by the 22s/22sC31-33 extended hopane ratios and 20s/(20s+20R)C29 regular steranes ratios.

An organic geochemical investigation on organic rich sediments from two Neogene formations in the Klias Peninsula area,West sabah,Malaysia

Twenty organic rich outcrop samples from the Belait and setap shale formations in the Klias Peninsula area, West sabah, were analysed by means of organic petrology and geochemical techniques. The aims of this study are to assess the type of organic matter, thermal maturity and established source rock characterization based primarily on Rock-Eval pyrolysis data. The shales of the setap shale Formation have TOC values varying from 0.6 wt%–1.54 wt% with a mean hydrogen index (HI) of 60.1 mg/g, whereas the shales of the Belait Formation have TOC values ranging from 0.36 wt%–0.61 wt% with a mean (HI) of 38.2 mg/g, indicating that both formations have TOC>0.5 wt% the minimum limit for hydrocarbon generation. The samples do not contain sufficient hydrogen-rich organic matter (types I, II and III) to be considered good quality source rocks. The kerogen of type II is predominantly of marine origin. This organic matter was deposited in clastic algal environments. Geochemical data (Rock-Eval, Tmax values ranging from 377–451℃ for shales of the setap shale Formation and ranging from 466–498℃ for shales of the Belait Formation, typical of high maturity), indicate variable maturation histories in both formations. The maturation level varied from the beginning to the peak stage of oil generation in the setap shale Formation and it has reached the over-mature level in the samples of the Belait Formation.

Differences in Organic C Mineralization Between Aerobic and submerged Conditions in Paddy soils of southern Jiangsu Province,China

Moisture regime plays a crucial role in the mineralization of soil organic carbon （sOC）. In this paper, the dynamics of sOC mineralization in typical paddy soils of Changshu, Jiangsu Province, China, was investigated by incubation test in laboratory. The differences in sOC mineralization under aerobic and submerged conditions of paddy soils were also studied. Results showed that the daily mineralization of sOC under different moisture regimes was significantly different in the whole incubation period, at the beginning of the incubation, it decreased quickly under aerobic condition, but increased rapidly under submerged condition, and both remained constant after 10 d of incubation. The differences in sOC mineralization were found to be mainly at the beginning period of the incubation and decreased along with the incubation time. Thus, the difference was not significantly different at the later incubation period. The respiration intensity, daily and cumulative mineralization of sOC under aerobic condition was 2.26-19.11, 0.96-2.41, and 0.96-2.41 times than those .under submerged condition, respectively. statistic analyses showed that the higher the contents of microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen, the more significant difference in respiration intensity between aerobic and submerged conditions, but the higher the contents of microbial biomass nitrogen and dissolved organic carbon, the more significant difference in daily mineralization of sOC between the two conditions. The decrease in soil microbial activity under submerged condition was the main reason leading to the decrease in respiration intensity, but the decrease in sOC mineralization was also correlated with the changes in dissolved organic carbon over the whole incubation period.

Dear Editor Macroautophagy （hereafter referred to as autophagy） is a cellular adaptation to starvation, involving the vesicular sequestration of the long-lived cytoplasmic proteins and organelles such as mitochondria （Klionsky and Emr, 2000）. However, it also results in cell death when overacUvated （Edinger and Thompson, 2004）. stresses which affect cel- lular homeostasis including changes in oxidation status, build-up of damaged organelles and misfolded proteins, and infection by pathogens, have also been shown to induce autophagy （Rabinowitz and White, 2010）. Besides, autoph- agy was found to be involved in cancer formation and pro- gression. Depending on tumor type, stage, and cellular context, autophagy can play either anti- or pro-tumorigenic roles （Mancias and Kimmelman, 2011）.

INFLUENCE OF sILICON IN sTEELs ON GALVANIZED COATINGs

After steel sheets （0.37wt%si） pre-electroplated with a thin layer of pure Fe were immersed in molten zinc for various time, the change in the microstructure of the galvanized coating on the steel and the change of α-Fe/Г interface were studied. The EDs （energy dispersive sepectroscopy） resuits show that excessive silicon accumulates on the surface of the steel substrate due to the low solubility of silicon in the Г layer after the Fe layer is depleted by the increasing growth of the compound layers. With the movement of α-Fe/Г interface towards the substrate by the Fe/Zn reaction, silicon-rich α-Fe peels off from the substrate and breaks into particles. The particles, much like an inert marker in a Kirkendall effect experiment, move towards the δ layer through the Г layer because silicon-rich α-Fe can not be adsorbed in the Г layer. On reaching the 8/F interface, the particles quickly dissolve in the δ layer, and accelerate its growth, resulting in the gradual disappearance of the Г layer. At the same time, the normal coating is quickly changed into coatings typical of reactive steels as silicon dissolved in the δ layer soon diffuses toward the ζ layer. A similar process may happen in the initial stage of galvanizing reactive steels on a small scale, although it is hard to be observed.

Experiments on Channel Evolution due to Dam Removal in Taiwan

Due to safety concerns and habitat restoration for landlocked salmon,a 13-m high check dam on Chijiawan Creek was removed in late May 2011 in *** conducted experiments to understand channel evolution of different *** further compared our experimental results of riverbed elevation changes with the analytical solutions derived from the diffusion equation and field dynamics as well after the creek experienced the first flood *** results indicated that magnitude of discharges and notch size are dominant factors in resulting channel *** the largest differences between grain size distribution are associated with discharge,the largest differences in net change in upstream volume are associated with notch *** the theoretical equation could help understand the channel change after dam removal,it only explained the evolution closer to the *** physical experiments,on the other hand,provided insights especially with regard to comparing alternative proposed management *** discrepancies between predicted and actual outcome highlight more needed inputs for future dam-removal assessments.

Measurement of the remnant magnetic-field in Lorentz mode using permalloy

A novel method was reported to measure the remnant magnetic field in Lorentz mode in a FEI Tecnai F20 transmission electron microscope equipped with a Lorentz lens. The movement of the circle Bloch line of the cross-tie wall in Permalloy is used to measure the remnant magnetic field by tilting the specimen and adjusting the objective lens current. The remnant magnetic field is estimated to be about 17 Oe, in a direction opposite to that of the objective lens magnetic field. The remnant magnetic field can be compensated by adjusting the value of the objective lens current.

Predominantly （100）-oriented Ca0.4sr0.6Bi4Ti4O15 （C0.4s0.6BTi） thin films were prepared on Pt （111）/Ti/siO2/si substrates by a sol-gel method at annealing temperatures ranging from 650 to 850 ℃.The growth mode of the predominantly （100）-oriented C0.4s0.6 BTi thin films fabricated by the sequential layer annealing was discussed based on the structure evolution with the annealing *** remnant polarization and coercive field of the C0.4s0.6 BTi film annealed at 800 ℃ are 16.1 μC/cm 2 and 85 kV/cm,*** evident fatigue can be observed after 10 9 switching cycles.

MPC-based interval number optimization for electric water heater scheduling in uncertain environments

In this paper,interval number optimization and model predictive control are proposed to handle the uncertain-but-bounded parameters in electric water heater load *** of all,interval numbers are used to describe uncertain parameters including hot water demand,ambient temperature,and real-time price of ***,the traditional thermal dynamic model of electric water heater is transformed into an interval number model,based on which,the day-ahead load scheduling problem with uncertain parameters is formulated,and solved by interval number *** tolerance degrees for constraint violation and temperature preferences are also discussed for giving consumers more ***,the model predictive control which incorporates both forecasts and newly updated information is utilized to make and execute electric water heater load schedules on a rolling basis throughout the *** results demonstrate that interval number optimization either in day-ahead optimization or model predictive control format is robust to the uncertain hot water demand,ambient temperature,and real-time price of electricity,enabling customers to flexibly adjust electric water heater control strategy.
