Using a simulation software to perform energy and exergy analyses of the sulfur-iodine thermochemical process

The objective of this work is to demonstrate the utilization of the power of simulation tools to perform an exergy analysis of a *** analysis,being a new and useful thermodynamics tool,will be applied to one of the newest research fields in hydrogen *** of the many advantages of computer simulation is elimination of the need to construct a pilot ***,extensive research is underway to come up with the production and use of clean *** research entails performing pilot studies and proof of concept experiments using validated *** research is further extended to various analyses such as safety,economic sustainability and energy efficiency of the processes *** production of hydrogen through thermochemical water splitting processes is one of the newest technologies and is expected to compete with the existing *** a wide range of thermochemical cycles,the sulfur-iodine(SI)thermochemical cycle process has been proposed as a promising technology for the production of *** this research,we demonstrate how a commercial simulator can be used to perform an energy and exergy analysis of the SI water splitting *** a commercial simulator,a process flowsheet is developed based on research findings presented by other authors and an energy-exergy analysis is carried out on the *** method of energy–exergy analysis used in this presentation indicates that an energy and exergy efficiency of 17%and 24%can be attained,respectively,in the conceptual design of the SI cycle.

Co-pyrolysis of South African bituminous coal and Scenedesmus microalgae:Kinetics and synergistic effects study

In this work,the co-pyrolysis of coal and algae is explored with special emphasis on decomposition kinetics and the possibility of the existence of synergistic *** and kinetics analysis based approaches were used for the investigation of the existence of synergistic *** co-pyrolysis kinetics was studied using the model-free,Coats-Redfern integral *** kinetics were evaluated for 1st and 2nd order reaction *** reveal that Scenedesmus microalgae is characterised by a two stage decomposition process that occurs at temperature ranges of 200-400℃and 500-700℃with activation energy of 145.5 and 127.3 kJ/mol,*** coal has a two stage,slow decomposition process that occurs at temperature ranges of 400-700℃and above 750℃with an activation energy of 81.8 and 649.3 kJ/mol,***,co-pyrolysis of coal and microalgae is characterised by three stages whose kinetics are dominated by the pyrolysis of the individual *** the studied range of coal/algae ratios,the three pyrolysis stages occur in the approximate temperature ranges of 200-400℃,430-650℃and above 750℃,with activation energies in the ranges of 131-138,72-78 and 864.5-1235 kJ/mol,*** and kinetics study showed that there is strong evidence of interactions between coal and microalgae that manifest as synergistic effects especially in the second and third stages of decomposition.

Most of the progress in the development of single scale mathematical and computational models for the study of infectious disease dynamics which now span over a century is build on a body of knowledge that has been developed to address particular single scale descriptions of infectious disease dynamics based on understanding disease transmission *** this single scale understanding of infectious disease dynamics is now founded on a body of knowledge with a long history,dating back to over a century now,that knowledge has not yet been formalized into a scientific *** this article,we formalize this accumulated body of knowledge into a scientific theory called the transmission mechanism theory of disease dynamics which states that at every scale of organization of an infectious disease system,disease dynamics is determined by transmission as the main dynamic disease ***,the transmission mechanism theory of disease dynamics can be seen as formalizing knowledge that has been inherent in the study of infectious disease dynamics using single scale mathematical and computational models for over a century *** objective of this article is to summarize this existing knowledge about single scale modelling of infectious dynamics by means of a scientific theory called the transmission mechanism theory of disease dynamics and highlight its aims,assumptions and limitations.

Catchment Management and Its Effects on Arable Lands of Zimbabwe: A Look beyond the Fast Track Land Reform Program

This study was carried out in selected districts of Mashonaland East and Central provinces of Zimbabwe in 2011 to determine the effects of soil erosion on arable lands and how this related to catchment management. Results show that the highest contribution is 53% and is obtained from arable land codes 5 and 7. These fields show signs of excessive sheet and gully erosion. The least contribution is 0.8% and this is on arable land codes 3, 4 and 8. These fields have properly done conservation works existing. 33% of the assessed arable lands have conservation works in place whilst 67% are not protected and as such the fields are eroded. Soil erosion results in the washing away of the precious top soil, responsible for plant growth and infiltration of rain or irrigation water. This reduces the usefulness of such affected arable lands as crops grown on it can’t thrive due to lack of soil fertility. The paper recommends that government policies focus more on promoting sustainable land use through integrated catchment area management. This will go a long way in achieving sustainable development in Zimbabwe.

Assessing the Presence or Absence of Climate Change Signatures in the Odzi Sub-Catchment of Zimbabwe

Climate change and potential adverse impacts on water availability for the purposes of sustaining competing demand uses are causes of concern among water resources managers. This study focused on assessing rainfall and runoff data of a micro catchment in Save’s Odzi sub-catchment to determine if any trends existed and how far the results indicated climate change. The study had four rainfall stations (Rusape, Nyanga, Mukandi and Odzi Police Rail) and five runoff stations (E32, E72, E73, E127 and E129). Mann Kendall’s test was applied for determining trends in the two variables. The results obtained do not point to climate change. This study recommended that issues of current land use patterns and water abstractions be thoroughly understood for the area under study. It also recommended that techniques which promote terrestrial carbon sequestration should be introduced in the micro catchment.

Response of Sweet Wormwood (<i>Artemisia annua</i>L.) to Different Rates of Inorganic Nitrogen Fertilizer in Semi-Arid Zimbabwe

Sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua L.) is a highly valued crop, native to China, whose active ingredient “artemisinin” and its derivatives: artemether and artesunate, are used to prepare anti-malaria drugs. In Zimbabwe, very little has been done on improving agronomic practices that can enhance the yield of this crop. As a result, herbal gardens in Zimbabwe producing this sweet aromatic herb are realizing low leaf biomass. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of varying nitrogen fertilizer levels on growth and yield of Artemisia annua. A randomized complete block design (RCBD) was used and replicated four times. The fertilizer treatments consisted of 0, 40 kg N/ha, 80 kg N/ha, 120 kg N/ha, 160 kg N/ha and were applied as a top dress four weeks after planting. Applying 80 kg N/ha, 120 kg N/ha or 160 kg N/ha resulted in the best performance of Artemisia annua with respect to the plant height, root dry weight, stem dry weight and leaf biomass. Low N level (40 kg N/ha) recorded significantly low means in plant height, root weight, stem weight and leaf biomass. The results suggest that 80 kg N/ha should be recommended for use by Artemisia annua farmers, since there was no significant different among the three higher fertilizer levels. However there is need for further research to determine different fertilizer use efficient to come up with accurate agronomic data package for Zimbabwean farmers.
