Exponentially-Fitted 2-Step Simpson’s Method for Oscillatory/Periodic Problems

Following a six-step flow chart, exponentially-fitted variant of the 2-step Simpson’s method suitable for solving ordinary differential equations with periodic/oscillatory behaviour is constructed. The qualitative properties of the constructed methods are also investigated. Numerical experiments on standard problems confirming the theoretical expectations regarding the constructed methods compared with other existing standard methods are also presented. Our results unify and improve the existing classical 2-step Simpson’s method.

On the Equivalence of Implicit Kirk-Type Fixed Point Iteration Schemes for a General Class of Maps

In this paper, a modified implicit Kirk-multistep iteration scheme and a strong convergence result for a general class of maps in a normed linear space was established. It was also shown that the convergence of this iteration scheme is equivalent to the convergency of some other implicit Kirk-type iteration (implicit Kirk-Noor, implicit Kirk-Ishikawa and implicit Kirk-Mann iterations) for the same class of maps. Some numerical examples were considered to show that the equivalence of convergence results to the fixed point is true. The results unify most equivalence results in literature.

Mathematical Modeling and Software Application of Blood Flow for Therapeutic Management of Stroke

People in the rural areas do not have access to specialist medical care, and when they have complications of stroke, they do not have specialists to look at them and they cannot afford to travel to the cities. The primary health care centers are not equipped with sophisticated equipments. Medicine is about medication, treatment and management. In rural areas treatment is not available either because of accessibility or affordability. Even the few doctors that are available are not in primary health care centres. Well conserved one-dimensional non-linear equations of blood flow describing blood flow in distensible blood vessels were used to develop software. This model could describe discontinuities and disruption in blood flow. The computer software can be used for detecting artherosclerosis, stenosis and differentiation of haemorrhagic and ischaemic strokes for stroke management from simple measurements. The software developed is capable of computing the Siriraj and the Allen clinical scores. These scores have been proposed to help clinicians in making decisions while waiting for results of computerized tomography, hence clinicians can start anti-thrombotic treatment while waiting for the scan results. It is capable of simulating stenosis at different position and depth of flow along the arterial length, and can be used for diagnosis. The medical emphasis is on avoiding possible occurrence, every individual can know his status by inputting the required data such as flow and geometry of their arteries into the developed interface and such measurements can be obtained from simple Doppler measurements.

Background: The world is currently experiencing a healthcare crisis caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Healthcare workers (HCWs) are at the forefront of controlling the spread of the disease;this response has resulted in a huge number of infections amongst HCWs and unfortunately some casualties. Infection prevention and control practices (IPC) are practical, proven methods that prevent avoidable harm to patients and protect health workers from contagious infection. This study was done to evaluate the effectiveness of IPC practices utilized in COVID-19 testing drive through facility in Lagos Nigeria. Method: The facility recruited 42 HCWs who were trained on IPC and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs). Training on donning and doffing of PPEs, preparation of decontaminants and sample handling were done for relevant personnel. A daily log for monitoring COVID-19 symptoms was deployed to all HCWs;to help early detection of COVID-19 infection and prevent transmission amongst staff. Results: Of 42 personnel, 92.8% had a tertiary level of education while 71.4% had at least 5 years work experience. A total of 5 (11.9%) out of 42 HCWs were positive by week six of the study. All infected persons worked at the drive through centre. Most common symptom filled in the daily log tool was headache and fatigue. Conclusion: Despite all the measures introduced, 11.9% of HCWs became positive within 6 weeks, showing the highly infectious nature of the virus and the need to research into more effective measures in preventing the transmission of highly infectious pathogens to HCWs during outbreaks.
